EUROPEAN VACATION — L-R STYLE On July 9, 1985. nine Lenoir-Rhyne stu- dents and one faculty member left New- ark Airport for three weeks in Europe. None of us students had ever traveled abroad, much less traveled with back- packs rather than suitcases. We left the States hoping to see great palaces, walk through beautiful cities, meet interesting people, and experience those things we had learned about in school. We weren ' t disappointed. We strolled through Hyde Park, saw Britain ' s Royal Family, climbed to the top of St. Paul ' s Cathedral, wandered through Westminster Abbey, and toured London in double-decker buses. In France, we saw the city of lights (Paris), sun-bathed on the Riviera, and were awed by Versailles. As with all trips, we were rained on. So in Venice, we took refuge in St. Mark ' s Ba- silica. Austria proved to be one of the prettiest countries we saw. The cities which we visited there, Vienna and Salz- burg, hosted the friendliest people and most gorgeous countryside. A sobering moment in the trip was our visit to Da- chau, the first concentration camp, in Germany. However. Germany also boasts many unique things. At the Heidelberg Youth Hostel, we saw how different American youth are from European youth, even to their style of dancing. From Heidelberg, we took a train to Am- sterdam, the city where everything goes! Our European vacation holds different memories for each of us. But we are all more appreciative of what we have here in the U.S. The desire and knowledge of traveling has been instilled in all of us and any are already planning their next trip overseas. A sea of faces stare seriously as the 1985 graduating class comes to the end of another step in their lives. A hug from President John Trainer is given to his wife on graduation day. This was Presi- dent Trainer ' s first graduation ceremony at LR. GRADUATION — HONOR ' S CONVOCATION At times we thought the S-.OO am classes and the mid-term exams would never end. Now it ' s graduation day and they ' re all over. Many of us have wished for this day only to be in tears now that it ' s here. It seems like only yesterday that we were saying, How am I ever going to fit in? and Mom, I want to come home. For most of us, it ' s been four short years since we arrived at Lenoir-Rhyne. We ' ve all come through this thing called the college experience and we ' ve become a family. We ' ve shared parties, studies, tears, and laughter. We ' ve seen tragedy, celebrations, failure, and suc- cess. As we sit in this gym, we look around . . . there ' s the professor who gave me a shoulder to cry on when I went through my first college romance. There ' s the resident assistant who nursed me through my first morning after, and there is my best friend. We ' ve been through everything imaginable and we ' ve come out stronger. Though, for many of us, this will be the last time we ' ll see each other, we ' ll always have the memories. We ' ll take with us all we ' ve learned, in and out of the class- room. Well go our separate ways holding tight to the memories of what people tell us are the best years of our lives. And that, is a Bear Necessity. Accepting an award from President Trainer for being the top graduates of LR with 4.0 GPAs is Sherryan Yarbrough. Shirley Anthony, and Loretta Beam. Looking down upon St. Andrew ' s sanctuary, we see the nursing department ' s special cere- mony for their graduating seniors. The nurs- ing department of LR is one of the few nursing schools who still hold religious ritual services. Accepting and honorary doctorate from LR is Russel E. Bud Brown, economics. Presenting the award is President John Trainer and David Hoyle, Chairman of the Board of Lenoir-Rhyne College. Student Life 19
