Anderson leaves Lenoir-Rhyne College For six rather intense but very rewarding years, my family and I have given Lenoir-Rhyne College and the Hickory community our best. I believe we have contributed something good to both, certainlv both have given something wonderful and forever memorable to us, announced Dr. Albert Anderson in his statement about his resignation from Lenoir-Rhyne. But now the time has come for the Andersons to consider other futures, and for the college to seek new leadership. Dr. Anderson became the eighth president of Lenoir-Rhyne in Sep- tember 1976. He came to Hickory from Moorhead, Minn., where he was the director of a three-college consortium called Tri-College Uni- versity, which was created under his leadership in 1969. Dr. Anderson ' s years at Lenoir-Rhyne have been marked by a broad- ening of the college ' s offerings to the students and community; an increase in monetary support of the institution; and the completion of several major capital projects. Three new majors were added during his tenure; accounting, international business, and psychology. A gradu- ate program in education and the Tuesday and Thursday (T ' N ' T) accelerated adult degree program were also added. The Lineberger Center for Cultural and Educational Renewal and the Broyhill Institute for Business Leadership were endowed under Anderson ' s leadership. Both are study centers which regularly bring significant speakers and programs to the Lenoir-Rhyne campus and its surrounding community Monetary support of the college also climbed during the Anderson administration with outstanding gains in both voluntary contribu- tions and endowment. Voluntary gifts have totaled more than 8 mil- lion dollars since 1976, and endowment doubled to around 6.5 million dollars. During Dr Anderson ' s presidency the Shuford Physical Education Center opened in 1979. Completed at a cost of 1.9 million dollars it includes a gymnasium, a swimming pool, large multi-purpose room, classrooms and offices. The new academic complex also opened shortly before his departure. This included the renovation of the Rhyne class- room building. Construction on the learning resource center adjacent to the library began under Anderson. Anderson left Lenoir-Rhyne, to accept the vice presidency for insti- tutional advancement at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, in Decem- ber, 1982. The entire Lenoir-Rhyne community wishes Dr. Anderson and his family the best in all future endeavors.
