Highland Academy — the building in which Lenoir % College began in 1891. Lenoir College was formally opened on September 1, 1891. The beautiful and spa- cious campus was the gift of Captain Walter Lenoir, in whose honor the College was origi- nally named. The will of Captain Lenoir stipulated that an initial $10,000 for build- ings and equipment be deposited with his executor, Colonial J. G. Hall. This amount was provided by the founders, Drs. R. A. Yoder, J. C. Moser, W. P. Cline and the Rev. A. L. Crouse, by discounting their individual notes, involving as collateral their entire possessions. In 1923-24, the name of the Col- lege was changed to Lenoir Rhyne College in honor of M. D. E. Rhyne, who gave a large sum toward the endowment of the College. Throughout its history Lenoir Rhyne has been closely identified with the Church, ■maintaining a strong Christian emphasis in its program. A distinct purpose has been the training of an educated leadership for the Church. The dominant policy of the College is to maintain academic excellence in a strong Christian environment. 9 V ' ♦ Women ' s Basketball.
