Sox. Without hesitation we dedicate our yearbook to two persons- one couple— who have been essential to our adjustment and achie ' emcnt at Lenoir Rhvne College. We found this couple in religious work— ' e found them in community life— we found them in campus acti ities. We are proud to dedicate the 1959 Hacawa to Dean and Mrs. E. T. Sox, who have given of their time, talent, energy and love to our Alma Mater. Page Nine President ' s Message Of the many purposes your Hacawa will serve, it should remind you that life is a vast bundle of associations and relationships. This is true of college years, but it is equally true of every stage and station we reach. Through these relationships we are the recipients of in- numerable blessings and benefits. No person is truly educated until he understands how he is constantly receiving from others and that his welfare is interwoven with theirs. Gratitude, therefore, should be a major characteristic of life. Gratitude reaches its height only when it extends bevond human relationships and embraces Him from Whom all blessings flow and acknowledges with Paul that I am debtor. When this conviction is genuine and deep it determines what we are and do. Lenoir Rhvne wan ' s each of her sons and daughters to achie ' e the distinction of grateful living. Dr. Voigt R. Paae iSHneteen Organizations Autumn brings to the campus students— personalities wilh talents and interests that seem as numerous as the lea ' es which float on the autumn winds. Yet, talents and interests are more lasting than the color of autumn lea ' es. They are things which cause students to seek ways for their de ' elopment— ways which find freshmen puz- zling in September over how many or which ones and upperclassmen planning when, what, and where. They lead to meetings, work on group projects and the honor of being an officer. When the world outside slows down and the sun gets lazier each day, they lead students inside to the unending acti ity of working always for a better world, a better school, a better self. it m -c- -6 J jcWl SiWL D QaholinsL First row. ' ' Stage crews, publicity committees, directors, actors and actresses gave time, talent, and thought throughout this year to provide a high caliber entertainment for all. Pp.ofessob George Spence Director Forensics This year found Lenoir Rhyne ' s forensic-minded students again capturing laurels by coordinating their minds and voices in declaring, discussing, debating, proving, and expressing effectively their thoughts and feelings. Notice Kermit Turner dis- played his talents at Wake Forest while veterans Judy Bittinger and Sybil Sharpe upheld Lenoir Rhvne ' s record at Appalachian. For the second time Mrs. Spence di- rected a successful South Atlantic Tournament. In a year crowded with thoughts of the scientific, nuclear weapons seemed an adequate topic for debate and Lenoir Rhyne debaters put no limits on their ' oices to prove it. C. with re- venge on their minds and upset the favored Terriers, while holding All-Americans Jerry Richardson and Char- lie Bradshaw almost totally ineffective with a bruising defensive game. Bill Ackard tallied twice and Tommy Simmons once. The forward wall led by Bill Johnson and Joe Murphy held Wofford to only 89 yards through the air and on the ground. BEARS 6, PRESBYTERIAN 8 The Blue Hose maintained their jinx over the Bears by almost completely controlling the contest while run- ning from a winged-T formation. To say that the Bruins were flat would take too much away from the brilliant display of speed, power and agility displayed by Hose QB Bob Waters, and halfbacks Bob Pate and Tony Benson. Only momentary defensive brilliance by the Bears kept the score so low. Bill Ackard tallied the Bears score on a 68 yard punt return, the only real happy moment of the game for the losers. BEARS 28, NEWBERRY 6 Ackard scored twice and completed seven of 11 passes for 112 yards and continued his pace-setting for the Bears. The Indians were virtually lost by the absence of six regulars due to injury. The Bears broke the backs of the Newberry defense with two third period markers and the Indians tallied their TD against Coach Stasavich ' s freshmen in the final two minutes. BEARS 28, APPALACHIAN 6 Fullback Lee Farmer broke the game wide open after being held in check by three opponents with 138 yards in 17 carries. A desperation fourth down pass netted the Apps their score in the first period after their ground game had been stymied on the five yard line. The Bears roared right back and took the lead with moments left in the half, 12-6, and then cinched the contest with two second half TD ' s. BEARS 30, GUILFORD Bill Johnson and Joe Murphy continued their weekly habit of spearheading the Bear defense as t hey allowed the Quakers to penetrate Bear territory no further than the 49 yard line. The outcome was never in doubt. Bill BURRIS Lage Teague Griffin Maples Martin Squad Ackard highlighted the contest with a 47 yard return of an intercepted pass to score. Freshman Marcus Midgett and Tony McClamrock played outstanding games, Tony gaining 104 yards. BEARS 36, WEST CAROLINA 30 The Bears won their third straight North State Con- ference game, by tallying 22 points in the fourth quarter and 14 in the final three minutes of the contest against W.C. Lee Farmer was the hero of the contest with 22 points scored for the night including the clincher with but 35 seconds remaining. Last minute glory of the Bears offset an almost phenomenal performance by WCC ' s Bobby Cooper who completed 9 of 10 pas ses for 129 yards. On two separate occasions the Bears needed three touchdowns to take the lead. BEARS 66, MARYVILLE 7 A 200 mile journey proved plentiful for LR. With the reserves, mostly freshmen, playing three quarters of the contest, the Bears went on the rampage to stomp winless Maryville. Marcus Midgett, freshman wingback from Alaiden, tallied twice on a 68 yard pass from McClamrock and a 66 yard run from scrimmage. Simmons Farmer McClamrock Midgett FUSONIE Renzullo BEARS 59, EAST CAROLINA 14 The Pirates came to Hickory hoping to defeat the Bruins and move on in the loop race, but instead fell ' ic- tim to the devastating single-wing attack of the Bruins. After scoring first, the Pirates were given a display of running and passing by Ackard, who crossed the double chalkmark from the 29 and the 7, and ended his blaze of glory with a 52 yard scamper through the entire visitors ' backfield. He totaled 287 yards running and passing to take over the league lead in total offense. The win clinched a tie for the title. BEARS 36, ELON 6 Number 4 title in succession was tucked comfortably into the Bruins pocket after this re enge win o er the Christians at Burlington. Ackard was again the hero with 209 yards total offense and 16 points scored. The team which handed the locals their only loop defeat in 3 years of competition was no match for the enraged charges of Coach Stas. Farmer threw TD passes to Midgett and Frank Weber of 10 and 12 yards, respectixely. i ' l r ' ' ' ' ! jv Freshman Wingback Marcus Midgett is shown dodging the last Catawba pla ' er in his way as he scampered 75 yards with a punt to score against the Indians. Sophomore Fullback Tommy Simmons is shown going over for a Bear score against the Quakers of Guilford. Bears won, 30-0. ' ■' ' i f: T- Managers George Reynolds, Junior Baucom Bill Ackard, Bear Tailback, is shown as he begins a 68 yard return of a punt for a touchdown against Presbyterian. The tally was the only one in an 8-6 loss to the Blue Ho;e, the Bruins cnh ' loss of the year. Adam Maples heads downfield through sev- eral of Elon ' s fighting Christians after snaring a pass. To enclose all the memories of one year in college in one book of this size was our aim. The work has been enriching, fun, and difficult. We began with a dummy— filled in with words, ideas, pictures, and thoughts and many advertisements. There ha ' e been headaches, broken pencils, sleepless nights, worn-out typewriters, complainers, disappoint- ments, fusses, thin sole shoes, and wonderful friendships made and sealed. Yet, through all the pessimistic thoughts the happy memories of working on this annual will be uppermost in the minds of this staff. We hope you like this book of memories and will cherish it. We have made errors, and who doesn ' t? The entire Hacawa staff is thankful for the experience of living, knowing, and working with you for this, the 1959 Hacawa! Some people call it a nose for news and others journalism, but for one group of students it ' s the Lenoir Rhynean. This year will be remembered for Joe ' s editorials on student government and for Susanne ' s hours of careful proofreading. Ruth and Libby were always out for those BIG scoops, and Emil and John followed the Bears. The reporters saw to it, usually, that the basket was full of copy, and with Linda ' s help the business and circulation de- partments ran smoothly. On Friday afternoon the staff dis- cussed the head that was too short or the misspelled words while everybody else drank in the news. Always all was for a greater Lenoir Rhj ' ne. Religion While the earth remains, seedtime and har ' est, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease. There is something eternal in the seasons as they come and go —something which breathes of both death and life, of sorrow and ioy, of tumult and peace, of the transient and the steadfast. Through spring ' s awakening, summer ' s growth, autumn ' s harvest, and winter ' s sleep the world goes on lining, moving, resting, dying. Yet, greater and more beautiful than nature ' s cycle or man ' s imaginings is a power which knows no season, that power which knows even of the sparrow ' s fall, that lo ' e which embraces all things great and small. It is that power and that lo ' e which penetrate into our hearts, causing our voices to sing as children in every season. In the brightness of spring and the bleakness of winter we learn anew to sing of the majesty, the power, the glory of God. Kn:eling: Donna Poovey, Secretary; Barbara Rhyne, President. Paf e Sixty Greeks From October ' s whispers of homecoming floats to May ' s busv efforts to capture the May Day Prize, there is always that earnest desire for the best for fraternity, for sorority, for college. But behind that e ' er present desire for the best is a bond which is greater than prizes and ribbons. There is that bond of friendship which makes it possible to face both triumph and defeat because we share them together. It is that bond which is found in the joy of an evening serenade and the confusion of learning a dance, in the anticipation of winning a first prize and the pride of taking second, in the brief happiness of sharing a joke and the lasting remembrances of old times and old friends. A ' hat- ever the letter or the crest, they stand for a bond of which we are proud. Left to right: Leta Kendall, Secretary- Treasurer; Bob Clodfelter, President; Byion Bean, Vice-President. Finishing the season with a 10-7 record overall and an 8-5 North State mark, the Bears were victimized by two things, rain and errors. On 13 occasions, a contest was called off because of rain, includ- ing return engagements with Davidson, Guilford, and Belmont Abbey which were cancelled at the end of the campaign. The Bears were fourth in the North State loop, losing all five loop contests to the three teams above them, two to Catawba and Elon and one to East Carolina. Three of these losses were by 2-1 scores. Freshman Lee Farmer, third baseman, led the team in hitting with a .302 average. Fox and freshman moundsmen Herman Starrette and Junior Baucom were selected on the All-Conference team, with Fox, Starrette and Farmer winning berths on the All- District 26 NAIA squad.
