Love is an elusive quality. Define it? Impossible! Manifested through surrender and devotion to thot which we deem worthy, love is life. nxiet f Anxiety lurks on the undetermined pathway. Dare we turn to face the frightful fiend behind? Ahead looms the dork unknown. The answer to every plea comes with silent whisper — maybe! WlJih ti ctuon We meditoted as the soul oftentimes repeated its query: I? WHY? We pondered. We sought answer and insight. The serenity of body and soul united in solitude. A still small Voice speaks somewhere and sings one high, clear note. ' )iir I eni )crci ni e momen j . 3 I ' m made of bubbles, soaring high info vibront ecstasy. The burdens of the world are far, for behind, darkened into oblivion. Joy ... a chronic stimulus which flings us above the soberness of normality. Melancholy toyed with our castles which shattered ' and tumbled. It probed the rubbles of disappoint- ment and found too often dejection. The wail of a trumpet heard at midnight . . . you listened until the mournful notes became a cry, until you knew it was not the horn thot was crying. men t Fulfillment was our triumph — the reward of o promise to ourselves. Our new carpet is the grass on the other side. With the culmination of truth, honesty, and ambition, our cup has been filled! I B I9icf taff r s«5 Foreword For fifty years the Hacawa has reflected the progress and development of a greater Lenoir Rhyne. The 1958 ' olume marks the golden anniversary ' of a vearbook which, since 1909, has unveiled the intimate storv of her student life. Although this current edition bears little tangible resemblance to its original ancestor, the objective has re- mained the same: In and around these centers, the 1909 book reads, the whole studen t life is here. The Hacawa is an emanation from the work, play, joys, trials and triumphs of the entire college for the vear. The eight seniors compiled the first ninety-page book, present- ing, perhaps, one-tenth the material contained herein. In your hands is the culmination of the endeavors of a fortv- five-member staff and their predecessors. As professor and friend with sympathetic understanding, you ha ' e respect- ed and guided our developing ideas with formative, not merely informative influence. The thoughts of yo ur ever-searching mind have inspired us to deeper, more worthwhile contemplations. Despite the fading of light from your own eyes, your inner radiance lights the paths of all who know vou. May this fiftieth anni ' ersary yearbook serve as a tribute to one whose presence and principles honor our Alma Mater— Dr. Dorus Paul Rudisill Professor and Head of Religions Studies and Philosophy Departments Dr. Voigt R. Cromer President President ' s ITIessage Your FTacawa, as indicated by the composition of the name, is the stoiy of HAlls, CAmpus, and WAlls. In countless and divers ways our treasures, ties, and interests are intertwined with these famiHar buildings and campus scenes. Knowledge and ideas, con- ictions and commitments, associations and friendships have been gained here. Our Alma Mater seeks to impart to her sons and daughters that which endures and is worth keep- ing—the true, the beautiful and the good. This fiftieth edition of the Hacawa becomes a precious and significant link in the lengthening chain of volumes of fond memories as one student generation after another inhabits the halls, campus, and walls of Lenoir Rhync College. Our common purpose finds expression in diversity — from eight o ' clock classes to midnight research papers — spending many afternoons in the library and evenings in bull sessions. There are times of frustration when darkness clouds our understanding — and moments of exhilaration when we first grasp a truth, knowing it to be ours as much as his who first stated it. We come to the conviction that knowledge lies not so much in memorization of facts as in the realization that education is a constant striving. Brian Hinshaw President Leta KE DAI,L Vice-President Class of 1961 With awe and timidity green rats dive into college life, feeling like little fish in a big pond. Choosing wisely is preached and repeated, but how can you refuse when you are being pulled in a thousand directions? Books . . . fraternities . . . clubs . . . sports . . . people . . . dancing . . . eating . . . Is there no end to this frustration? George Keck President John Moore Vice-President Sandra Deaton Secretary Class of 1958 We passed through all the stages— the greenness, the bustle, and the indecision. We made mistakes, but looking backward is but futile so we look toward the sun, trusting its brightness will illuminate our new life. Yes, parents and professors to reprimand are among those reliques we have left behind. Graduation sets us treading the grass we hoped would be greener on the other side. Page Seventy-three W ' y ' mm i College is learning — deep and thorough — but learning is not con- fined to the intellectual. We seek to be complete, well-rounded . . . to express our thoughts and beliefs clearly, to develop our talents fully, to know our inner selves truly. We seek to appreciate others — to realize their good qualities — seeing their faults, but still loving and admiring them. We learn to dwell in crowds, to feel the electrical charge as a winning point is scored ... the weekly trudge to the auditorium for convocation ... the mute beauty of shadows and music and danc- ing. And still, we keep our individuality over and above the crowd. We become truly active and alive. We serve without hope of reward and work where our interests and capabilities lie. We find our place in society and hope to excel, because through our college activities we learned to fill our space with the best that we have. Fritz Apple Greensboro, N. C. With the facilities of the P. E. The Playmakers presented a series of one-act plays and worked with the music department on the annual Junior Class production Oklahoma, in addition to producing three full-length plays, all of which resembled profes- sional talent: Stalag 17, The Ghss Menagerie, and se ' eral one-act plays. ' 57 Season Coach Clarence Stasavich ' s gridiron powers captured their third straight North State Conference crown at the December 3 conference meeting to chmax a season full of surprises, disappointments, and spectacular performances. The Bears, winning the title amidst one of the most confused situations in the history of the conference, finished the campaign with a respectable 5-1-0 loop mark, but there was some doubt as to who would take the crown. Elon ended the season with a perfect 4-0-0 r ' cord but the Christians failed to fulfill the requirements for the crown, as a team needs at least five family engagements to claim the championship. At a hectic loop meeting, a dramatic action by Elon— that Lenoir Rhyne be declared champions— was unanimously carried after it was almost certain that the conference would declare a no-champion. Led by two-time All- American, Harold Bullard, the Bear gridders proved to be not only one of the most offensive but defensive-minded teams in the history of the college. The Bruins placed three men on the all-conference squad, one was named to the all-state team and three on the All-District 26 NAIA team. The 1956-57 edition of the Lenoir Rhyne Bears goes down in the annals of gridiron history as one of which to be proud. ' t GUILFORD vs L. R. Guilford, generally the weak sister of the North State, felt the Bears ' fury in a 55-6 triumph which capped Lenoir Rhyne ' s giant homecoming festivities. Talk that the Bears were a one-man team was definitely disproved following the game, for All-American fullback Harold Bullard was confined to a Hickory hospital with the flu. Romp- ing in his place were Bill Ackard and a couple of freshman fullback finds, Lee Farmer and Tommy Simmons. Six men figured in the scoring column: Ackard tallied twice on runs of five yards each; wingback Wilson Martin scored on a ten-yard pass from Ackard and an eighty-yarder from Danny Williams; Farmer plunged seven yards; Dean Cline tromped four; little Tommy McCormick scooted 22 yards and Foster gathered in a 21 -yard toss from Cline. In Coach Stasavich ' s fourth loop win, the Bears found a new aerial attack to their liking, with quarterback Dean Cline show- ing the way— five completions in five attempts, good for 99 yards. Overall, the Bruins completed 11 to 15, for 194 yards. But the unheralded linemen, who often have a hard job getting enough recognition, always manage to show-up in the game statistics. Guilford mustered only 90 yards on the ground, the majority of that figure coming on their long scoring drive against the Bear reserves. Collins converted after five of the touchdowns and Reynolds added two others. WOFFORD vs L. R. The lights of College Field shone down on what was called the battle of the Carolinas ' small-college powerhouses on September 21 at 8 p. m. Wofford ' s Terriers were challenging the Bears ' winning stteak. Two hours later, the men from Spartanburg, S. C. trekked off the field with a win under their jerseys, ending Lenoir Rhyne ' s unbeaten streak at 21 games— a mark that spanned three seasons. The scoreboard told part of the story, 13-6. But lights and figures could not reveal the devastating aerial attack that riddled the Bears ' defense for both touchdowns. With quarterback Charlie Bradshaw passing and end Jerry Richardson catching, the Terriers pulled the big upset. The hard-fought battle showed possibilities of becoming a runaway when speedy Bill Ackard hauled in the opening kick- off and raced 80 yards to the Wofford 10. But the Terrier defense was too much and the Bears lost the ball on downs. The Bruins scored their lone touchdown when guard Nor- man Punch recovered a fumble on the Wofford 47, and the Bears, mainly behind Harold Bullard and Dickie Foster, drove goalward. Bullard finally culminated the drive by tallying from five yards out. The Terrier forward wall virtually stopped the Bears ' attack, and particularly All-American Bullard. After the game. Coach Clarence Stasavich remarked, It was certainly no disgrace to lose to a fine team like that. It ' s the best team I ' ve seen at Wofford in the last five years. ■hBI N ' evio Rekzullo Bob Miller Wilson Martin Dantjy X ' V ' llliams Dickie Foster Lee Farmer Allan LaTorre Leveo Sperotto Dean Cline Frank Webek Ronnie Hoffman John David Moose NEWBERRY-L. R. The 43-0 trampling of Newberry ' s Indians should have been named Harold Bullard Night. As Coach Stasavich summed it up, The big differences in our win over Newbern, ' were the line play, downfield blocking and Harold Bullard. The blasting rocket from Rockingham displayed his true potential against the hapless Newberrians, ripping for five touchdowns, picking up 209 yards and intercepting a pass- not bad for one night ' s work. From the very beginning, the famed Battle of the Lutherans gave evidence of being no contest. Bullard tallied on jaunts of 69, 31, 31, 13, and two yards and Ronnie Hoffman added the sixth with a 39 yard dash. While the majoritv ' of the talk centered around Bullard, other backs had a good game also. Hoffman gained 73 yards. Bill Ackard gathered 47 and Dickie Foster picked up 43. The Bears ' line play and downfield blocking, while not gen- erally as spectacular as the long run, were nothing short of sensational. After the game, an official said the Brjiins ' do ' n- field blocking was the best he had ever seen. Dean Cline, Ackard and Bullard were prominent in this blocking. Tackle Leveo Sperotto, guard Norman Punch, centers Joe Murphy and Allan LaTorre. and the ends— Hume Collins, Guy Fisher, Frank Weber and Wade Teague— spearheaded a defense that limited the Indians to 69 vards on the turf. CATAWBA-L. R. It was a happy Turkey Day for Lenoir Rhyneans— In addi- tion to the usual holiday, the bears stamped rival Catawba by the unbelie ' able score of 75 to 0. But it was all true! The growling Bruins, having heard that the winner of the Thanksgiving tussle would no doubt be declared North State Gridiron champs, raced and passed to perfection in rolling up the avalanche of touchdowns. Lenoir Rhyne picked up 415 yards on the ground and 155 passing. The most astounding fact, however, is that the first team scored only five of the 1 1 touchdowns— the second and third stringers tallied six. Harold Bullard, pla nng his last game for the Bears, scored on romps of 4, 54, 8 and 13 yards and. in recognition of his fine blocking, was named Greensboro Daily News Athlete of the U ' eek. Bill Ackard passed for two scores, throwing to John Da -id Moose for a 1-i-yard strike and to Ronnie Hoffman for nine yards. Lee Farmer tallied once. Bob Miller, once. Tommy McCormick twice and Tommy Simmons once to round out the Bears ' scoring. Eight Bears played their final game: Bullard, Hoffman, Col- lins, Miller, ' illiams. Cline, Sperotto and Punch. Coach Bill Wells, embarking on his first year as head coach of the Bears, faced a rebuilding stage at the beginning of the campaign with All-American Raeford Wells and All-Conference Walt Cornwell departed from the ' 57 championship squad. Wells imported two Kentucky Junior college flashes, Dick Whitis and Bill Reece, and along with the returning Icttermen molded a championship team that copped 22 victories while losing only three. Their latest victory being over the High Point Panthers in the finals of the North State Conference Tournament and with two more wins the Bears can be Kansas City-bound. Dick Whitis, the leading scorer among junior colleges in Kentucky last season, was brought in to fill the vacated center post and the lanky 6 ' 5 star ended the regular season as the Bears leading scorer and rebounder. Many honors came Lenoir Rhyne ' s way as Coach Wells was named the Coach of the Year in District 26 of the N.A.I.A.; Whitis and Captain Tommy Sellari were selected to the All- Conference team and Sellari pulled down an All-State berth. Veterans Tommy Sellari, Ken Norman, Johnny James and Frank Cline teamed to give the bears their championship com- bination along with top reserves Eddie Goodnight, Tommy McCormick, Dickie James and Harlan Bowman. The Bears opened the season by winning five of their first si.x contests in the pre-holiday games with the only loss being to Belmont Abbey on the Abbey ' s home court. They had a most successful trip East beating both East Carolina and At- lantic Christian on their home courts in the final game before the holidays. Following the Christmas holidays the Bears rolled over all conference opposition with the exxeption of A ' estem Carolina, who beat the Bears on their home court to end the season as the top-seeded team in the North State Conference with a 15-1 record. Success fa -ored the Bears in the tournament as the ' dumped Catawba, Western Carolina, and High Point in a row to win the conference title for the second straight year. Coach Wells remarked, I think the success of our basket- ball team this season can be explained in one word PFUDE— the pride of doing the job well . . . pride in Lenoir Rhyne for whom they play, and tremendous pride in the folk of Hick- ory and in students that have supported them so faithfuOy. A friendship that is ours to share, with its ' largos ' and ' allegros ' moves onward in sweet memories. nterfraternity Counci Buddy McEachern President Luther Boliek Vice-President Nancy Holshouser Secretary-Treasurer Composed of presidents and representatives from each fraternity and sorority, the Interfraternity Council serves as a bond of union for the social organizations and is concerned with the program of social activities on campus. Under its revised constitution, this council settles all matters which might arise between individual sororities or fraternities. First row. Believing in their motto of Alma mater first; Theta Chi for alma mater, the more than fifty brothers sought brotherhood through participation in campus activities. The men of red and white entered Foun- tains of Victory in the Homecoming parade and copped first honors in the most beautiful di ' ision. Beauty was its highlight with the regal loxeliness of Miss Elaine Herndon of Durham, Miss North Carolina, riding atop the entry. Christmas in Manhattan, featuring the music of East Carolina College ' s noted Colle- gians, was the theme for the Theta Chi-spon- sored Christmas Dance in Shuford Gym. the year ' s largest. Intramural competition found the Big Red ranking near the top, capturing volleyball and ping-pong titles after fielding strong football and basketball squads. Other impressionable moments: The pride of owning the HICIIEST fraternity scholastic a - erage for the preceding year . . . the former chapter sweetheart who became a May Queen . . . serenading the frauleins . . . bus trips to support the basketball Bears . . . making signs for pep parades . . . outings and parties at the cabins on the lake . . . all of which will live for years to come in the minds of 1957-58 Theta Chi men. These have been four fruitful years since that April in 1954 when Eta Delta Zeta local fra- ternity affiliated with the national TKE organi- zation, bringing the fraternity for men to Hickory. At present, some forty Lenoir Rhyne Tekes salute the Hacawa on its fiftieth anniversan,-, and TKE members look forward to being a part of a progressive Lenoir Rhyne for fifty years to come and thereafter. Charity, esteem, and lo e for their fellow man are three cardinal principles of Tau Kappa Epsilon. Through these principles TKE strives to develop social, mental, and physical maturity among the fraters. The 1957-58 session has been a busy one for the LR Tekes. Two eyes, two lips, two ears, two legs, two arms, a nose ... can these simple external faculties be truly beautiful? Were we blind, beauty would perhaps be more real to us than it is now. Then we would more often probe beyond the physical and explore, in a person ' s inner depths, the qualities of es- sential worth. Beauty, like love, is difficult to define but easy to over- look, because it is more than a mere surface manifestation.
