McCreary, the masterpainter of all major Lenoir Rhyne publications. As chairman of the faculty publications committee, he has ex- erted a watchful eye and a guiding hand, encouraging the Lenoir Rhyne journalistic outlets to assume their place of prominence within the campus activities. Not particularly by guiding the brush strokes . . . but by sup- plying the easel, he has assumed the giant behind the scenes position. It ' s all yours, Mac ! (g W Dr. Voigt R. Cromer To capture, to enhance, m. a icc.iil i.l ihe beautiful, thi i tiinniN. meaningful qualities of life work. Because the Hacawa seeks to do this, it serves a distinctive role in the unfolding ■' vear. Other cli- matic honors included; recognition as the nation ' s number two team in scoring among undefeated schools, the placing of eight men on the All-North State Con- ference squad, the selection of four Bruin hustlers on the All-State team— all to be topped off with Coach Stas named as coach of the year in North Carolina. Paced by tailback Walt Cornwell, who scored twice and passed for another, the Bears tallied the first time they got their hands on the pigskin and again in the second quarter for a slim two touchdown first half margin. Hal Bullard and Bob Miller moved the ball to the Catamount 14, from where Cornwell tossed a TD pass to end Frank Weber for the first score. Weber ' s blocked punt set up the second Bear touchdown. Dean Cline passed 28 yards to Miller on the WCC four and Cornwell carried over on the next play. Cornwell ' s brilliant 89-yard jaunt in the third quarter boosted the score to 21-0. The Bears added insult to injury in the final period when Billy Page and full- back Jim Campbell scored two quick TD ' s. The final touchdown came after the Bruins recovered a WCC fumble on the 20 and Danny Williams passed to Dickie Foster for the score. Foster and Collins watch Bullard work Turkey Day. Lenoir Rhyne 57 — East Carolina 12 The Bears opened up with one of their most devastating offenses of the year when they trounced East Carohna, 57-12 on College Field, Saturday, November 3, before a near sellout throng. Fullback Harold Bullard, aided by Dean Cline ' s two scoring passes, keyed the Bear win with four touchdowns. A powerful ground attack mixed with an accurate aerial game to completely outclass the visitors, who scored only twice against LR reserves late in the game. The Bears wasted no time in their quest for victory number eight by moving 82 yards from the opening kickoff to paydirt on two long runs by Bullard and Walt Cornwell. Cline ' s 38-yard scoring pass to Bob Miller climaxed the drive. Bullard tallied twice more in the first quarter. Bill Paige dashed 10 yards to score on the second play of the second period but the remainder of the first half showed little movement. Second half TD ' s were scored in quick succession by Cornwell on a pass from Cline, Page, Foster and Bullard. Bullard lies on the around and watches. Bill Dameron Co-Captain L ' X£ jt «( ' . C Great gridiron teams have come and gone in the North State Conference but none has been better labeled than the 1956 Lenoir Rhyne powerhouse juggernaut, which rolled to 10 consecutive vic- tories and the conference title with little challenge. The Bears received no post-season Ixjwl bid; but Coach Stas and his assistants, Hanley Painter and Sid Wilson, molded together one of the greatest football elevens ever to hit the North State Loop. They set a new conference scoring record for one season by tallying 380 points and only once were held to as little as two touchdovvns in a single contest. Honors were heaped upon LR from all over. The Bruins received national recognition by ranking as the nation ' s number two team in scoring among the undefeated schools. The Bears placed a record eight men on the All North State Conference squad and four on the All-State team. Answering the All-American roll were fullback Harold Bullard and guard Arden Ray. Bullard became the first con- ference player ever to be named on Williamson ' s Mid-Bracket All- America team. Pulling in All-Conference laurels for the Bears were Bullard, Cline, Cornwell, Collins, Sperotto, C ' aptain Bill Dameron, Ray and LaTorre. Cornwell, Bullard, Collins, and Ray also achieved All-State honors. To make it a clean sweep, Bullard was named the loop ' s most val- uable performer, and Stas was named coach of the year in North Carolina. Statistic-wise, the Bears placed high in national NAIA ratings with an average of 280.7 ards rushing, 106.5 yards in the air, and a total offense mark of 387.2. Bullard paced the league in point production with 16 touchdowns and in ground yardage with 1075. The Bears opened the 1956 season with an expected easy 67-0 triumph over an outmanned Newport News Apprentice School eleven. Bob Miller made his debut at tailback against the Shipbuilders and tallied four TD ' s. Ronnie Hoffman raced 75 yards for one score, but the regulars saw little action in the final half as Coach Stas cleaned the bench. The following week, Lenoir Rhyne experienced its toughest con- test of the campaign, edging Wofford, 13-7, on the Terriers ' home field. Freshman tailback Bill Rhodes emerged as the hero, bulling five yards for the winning marker with 40 seconds left on the score- board clock. The battle of the Lutherans was staged the next week at New- berry with the Bears coming out on top by 35-25. LR ran up a 35-7 margin on the running of Cornwell and Bullard, but the Indians scored three quick touchdowns to narrow the final margin. Wins Bowl Game Bullard hit his 1955 form against arch-rival Appalachian to lead the Bears to their first conference victory, 32-0. He gained 136 yards on the ground and scored twice. Cornwell aided in the LR attack with 112 yards rushing. A capacitj ' crowd saw the Bears rack up 243 yards on the ground and 108 via the air while holding the Apps to a virtual standstill. Guilford proved easy prey for the Bruins the following week, Lenoir Rhyne romping to an easy 61-7 win. Out of this game came one of the football oddities of the year. LR scored 16 points before the Quaker could run a play from scrimamge! Bullard ran wild against the home- standers, gaining 170 yards in 14 carries while frosh wingback Dickie Foster picked up 109 yards on the turf in but four totes. L. R. returned home the following week to battle the Western Carolina Catamounts and romped to a 35-0 victory although the Cats were expected to be strong. The Catamounts outgained LR on the ground but never threatened to score as the tough Bear forward wall refused to give ground. Quarterbacks Cline and Williams combined to give the Bruins a devastating aerial attack. Llomecoming came to a brilliant climax when the Bears topped pre- viously unbeaten Emory and Henry, 25-6, before a sellout crowd. The Wasps battled the Bears to the limit during the first half, but an 80- yard dash by Cornwell proved to be the damaging blow. Bullard and Cornwell ran wild in the final half to give the Bears the win. The Bears turned in their best performance of the season thus far the following week by trouncing a good East Carolina eleven, 57-12. The Bruins mixed a bulldoing ground attack with a brilliant aerial offensive to humiliate the Pirates. It was a cold night in Burlington the following week, but the Bears remained hot to capture their ninth straight win over Elon, 27-13. Bullard put on an amazing first-half display of running and ended the night with 1 50 yards and two touchdowns. His understudy, Camp- bell, replaced him in the second half and continued to torment the Christian line. The Bears climaxed a great season with an amazing display of power against their bitter rivals, Catawba, on Thanksgiving Day at Salisbury. Before a capacity crowd of 8,500 the Bears fought off two early game Catawba rallies to win 28-0. Bullard went over the 1000-yard mark against the Indians by gaining 170 yards and scoring on runs of 75 and 47 yards. Cornwell tallied on a 32-yard jaunt while Collins and Sperotto were brilliant in the LR defense. Certainly it was one of the greatest seasons for any team in the history of the North State Conference. As one opposing coach put it, Lenoir Rhyne just didn ' t have a weakness. They could run through you or pass over you and their defense was great. However, they dropped the tournament championship contest to Elon in an overtime thriller. Paced by All-American Raeford Wells, Coach Jim Hamilton ' s boys turned in the best school won-lost mark on record, winning twenty while dropping but five. Wells continued his torrid scoring pace for the third consecutive year, dropping in 612 points in 25 tilts, to pull in All- Conference honors along with the now-departed Bob Ortmyer. Lenoir Rhyne opened the 1956-57 hardwood campaign with a 90-86 loss to Belmont Abbey but then proceeded to win nine straight through the Appalachian contest. After lo sing to the Crusaders, the Bruins topped Newberr} ' , Pfeiffer, and the Abbey in succession in non-loop contests. Then they traveled to the East to open their 1957 conference slate on a surprising note, beating both East Carolina and Atlantic Christian on their own home courts. Veterans Walt Cornwell, Tommy Sellari, Frank Cline, and Johnny James aided Wells in the early season ' ictories with a trio of freshmen coming along in the later stages— forwards Ken Norman and Harland Bowman and guard Eddie Goodnight. With unexpected help from the frosh ranks and the great improvement of the returnees, the Bears entered the North State tournament as one of the top outfits and were given a good chance to beat any team on a given night. The Bears played their final seven home games in their new gym, the Shuford Memorial Gymnasium, which seats 3,660 spectators comfortably. The new gym offers LR ' s cagers one of the finest basketball plants in North Carolina for years to come. Success indeed favored the 1957 hardwood court Bruins, who climaxed the season with a 24-game winning streak and both the North State season and conference tournament championships. Coach Mac Erwin, in his final year as Bear diamond coach, guided his ' 56 baseballers to one of their most successful campaigns in years as they barely missed the North State title on the final day of the season. The Bears went into that contest needing a win to cop the crown but Elon ' s Christians upset them to hand East Carolina the championship with a 10-3 record compared to the Bears ' 9-3 loop mark. Paced by the hitting of Walt Comwell, Jim Kimmell, Ralph Carswell, Jerry Fox, Buzz Peeler, and Billy John- son and the pitching of Raeford Thomas and Peeler, the Bruins compiled a 13-9 record overall. Comwell, who pulled in All-State laurels, led the hitting with a .400 ax ' erage. He also pounded out five home runs and col- lected 20 RBI ' s to pace the team in those departments. Other .300 hitters for LR were Peeler with .387, Carswell with .329, and Fox with .319. Thomas turned in a 6-2 mound record and Peeler a 5-3 mark to bear the brunt of the hurling chores. New baseball coach Hanley Painter is expecting a strong squad this spring and with a little pitching help will be rough to handle. He lost only Joe Buff, Kimmell, and Peeler off the ' 56 nine and has a power array of lefthanded hitters returning, including several fine frosh prospects. Track An accompanying sign of spring on the local campus is the sight of Coach Bill Brandon as he fires the gun signaling the beginning of track season. In keeping with the L. With numerous lettermen returning to participate indications are that 1957 will be a highlighting year for aspiring Olympics. Bill Brandon Conch Page One Htmdred Two Lore, Trivette, Dasher, Short, Little Ten nis The Lenoir Rhyne netmen, with two returning lettermen, met stiff competition in the North State League and failed to win a team victory during the 1956 campaign. Ahhough many of the matches were close and hard-fought the racquet squad could not find a winning combination. E ' en though the team failed to capture any team victories, each man on the six man team earned a letter by winning a single match in Conference play. The outlook has taken a bright appearance as the 1957 season approaches. With three lettermen returning and with several seasons of apprenticeship under their belts, the Lenoir Rhyne squad appears to be ready to taste from the cup of victory.
