Twenty-nine men saw action, which ga ' e Coach Stas a chance to look o ' er his many new prospects. The home season was opened with a very tough assignment— Eastern Carolina who was favored to take the Conference Championship. The game was rough and rugged, with Eastern striking paydirt in the first quarter. In the second quarter the Bears bounced back with the fancy footwork of Frosh Ackard. With the ball on the one foot line, Glover cracked over for the T.D., but the conversion was wide. Final score, 7-6. The following week at Newberry the underdog Bears fought the fa ' ored Indians to a 13-13 deadlock. The Bears gained 232 yards to Newberry ' s 93 on the ground, and in the air it was again the Bruins by 69 to 55, which indicates who outplayed whom. ■v ft 7 13 1 , 5. 30_ aa 70 , 47 S9 37 18 A. , .• .%t Til A ' ' K m Leon Harrington Robert Henry Bill Ackard Joe Buff Joe Gaffey Gene Frye Jim KiMMELL Jerry Trolitman Dean Cline Dick Gantt Harold Bollard Jack Barringer Back on College Field the L.R. charoes came against a strong, determined Appalachian eleven. Ackard snagged an Appalachian pass on the L.R. 10 and raced all the wav, Frve again converting successfully. As the game ended, the Bears were on the A.S.T.C. one foot line, stranded by the clock. Final score, 21-14. At their last home game of the season the Bears were determined to pro ' c their excel- lence as a team— and teamwork ga ' e them a 20-7 victory over the Wasps of Emory and Henry. At Wofford the following week the Bears again showed thev were a much better squad than the records indicated. Thev put up a very stubborn battle against the highlv favored Terriers, allowing only a 21-13 victory. Moving on to Elon the Bears ruled the game for 58 minutes 6-0. Then Elon struck back with 2 touchdowns, for a final score of 14-6. The Bears moved on to Guilford. Mike Glover Jerry Mauldin Then came the Homecoming Day game with Western Carohna. The Bears quickly iumped to a 14-0 lead and appeared to have the oame well in hand. But durino the second hall the Catamounts scored 3 touchdowns, making the final score 21-19. The Bears wound up their season with the traditional Thanksgiving Day battle with Catawba and found themselves on the short end of a 14-7 score, and this ended the season with a 2-7-1 record. Only half the picture is painted by the record; lady luck obviously tinted the other half a dismal shade of indiyo.
