Cromer PRESIDENTS MESSAGE This ' olume will be treasured as a reminder of college associations and surroundings, of many jovs and some heartaches at Lenoir Rhvne. Ad ' antages and adversities have met you here. The significant fact is not what vour circumstances have been but how they have affected you. Thus it will be wherever you may go. Not what your environment is but what vou let it do to vou will be the ultimate test. So— Keep thy heart with all diligciice; for out of it are the issues of life. — Fvo erbs 4:23. North State Champs . . . Our fighting teams gave X us thrilling moments for relaxation from books. FOOTBRLL Kin of ai The Lenoir Rhvne football team of 1951 became the first team in the school ' s history to win the undisputed championship of the North State Con- ference, as the offense-minded Bears won ten games while losing one. Under the capable direc- tion of head coach Clarence Stasavich, line coach Pride Ratterree, and end coach Troy Washam, the team finished conference plav with a 6-0 record, as Ste ' e 1 rudnak set a new state scoring record of 1 12 points. In the first bowl game for a Lenoir Rhvne team, the Bears defeated Pennsvlvania State Teachers Col- lege of California, Pa., 13-7, in the Pvthian Bowl at Salisbury. Led by two all-conference tackles, co-captains Jimmy Bull Newsome and Albert Archibald, the team scored 318 points, while giving up 76 to op- ponents. Three men, Steve Trudnak, Jim Garrett, and Newsome, were placed on the all-state squad, while seven men were chosen on the all-conference selections: Garrett, Trudnak, Newsome, Archibald, George Robison, Gene and Jerrv Robinson. After scoring a 28-0 victory over Erskine in the season opener, the team met its first strong opposition in Davidson on Sept. 22, winning 21-7 in the rain. Jerry Robinson ' s 90-yard kickoff return provided the spark. Newberry ' s Indians fell 27-14. and Steve Trudnak scored all twenty points, as Appalachian was defeated. 20-0. The team ' s success was due to the fine coaching, the polished teamwork and blocking, the rugged defensi ' e play, and the performances of the individual stars. Troy Washam Coach The baseball team continued to be a powerhouse in the North State Conference as Coach Troy Washam led his team to second place in the con- ference standings. Four men were placed on the all-conference team: Shortstop Paul Cooter Jones, for the third consecutive year; First Baseman Willard Flip Neighbors; Left Fielder Gene Robinson; and Giles Nanners ' ' Setzer, for the second vear. The champion Elon team handed the Bears two losses to push them from first place. The most deci- sive blow was a three-hit pitching performance bv Lion ' s Austin Brewer, v ' on bv Elon, 10-0. The Hickory Rebels, professional team, was de- feated by the Bear team, 8-2, vi ' hile a powerful team from Carolina Mills of Maiden went down, 6-3, at the hands of Coach Washam ' s squad. Absent from last year ' s championship team were Leo Kantorski, Billy Wells, and Willard Neighbors. The outcome of the 1952 season rested heavily on co-captains Tony Sellari and Jimmy Newsome, Ed Pawlak, Dan Keister, and Elmer Lutz. Some new faces appeared on the basketball court to fill the vacancies. Freshmen Paul Lojpersberger and Raymond Rusty Reid stepped into varsity guard posts, while newcomers Frank Flassell and Ed Probel alternated at center and forward. The team started slowly after an opening victory over the Charleston Naval team. Losses came at the hands of Newberry, Presbyterian, Western Carolina, Woftord, and Appalachian. The lack of experience hurt the team. Then came important victories. A new scoring record for the team was set as Catawba fell, 96-69. Atlantic Christian was dropped, 61-59, and High Point lost her first conference game of the year to the Bears, 61-57. As the season passed the half-way mark, the team was still lacking in several departments, but Coach Hamilton ' s hard work was beginning to pav off. 1952 Standina; Reid, Baker, Vellutato.
