It was rough going on foreign soil as our Bears met the fighting Newberry team at Newberry, South Carolina. Again with the passing of C. A. Frye coming to light, and with the aid of a freak fourth quarter touchdown, the second ' ictory of the season was ours— 13-7. Accurate ):)lace kicking on the part of Appalach- ian ' s Bill Cross provided the margin of ' ictory, as Resume of FOOT the Mountaineers turned back our fighting eleven 20-18, giving the Bears their second straight conference loss of the season. The deadly passing eye of Gabriel and the Bears ' ' inability to make extra points were the decisi ' e factors in the defeat. From this point forward the tide began to change and our Bears began to pour it on their opponents both offensively and defensively. It was a dark day for the High Point Panthers as the Bears spoiled their I lomecoming festivities with a stun- ning 65-0 victory. The 65 points score broke an all time Lenoir Rhyne record which dated back to 1922. Revenge was sweet for the Bears on f ome- coming Day here at Lenoir Rhyne as power and speed combined with brilliant defensive plav brought home a 25-7 victory over Western Carolina. A Homecoming crowd of about 5,500 fans watched the first defeat handed to W.C.T.C. by the Bears in five games since the war. Bill Crook Tailback BRLL Season Sparked b ' the offensi ' e plav of Trudnak and the defensive hne play, it was smooth saiUng as Atlantic Christian became tlie third straight victim of our Bear oridders— 31-7. The bio fulllxick drove over for three touchdowns as he led the massacre of the hapless Bulldoas. A stubborn eleven from Guilford Colleae put up a oallant battle before going down to the power- ful ]3ears 20-0. This was indeed one of the roughest and hardest fought games of the season. It was without doubt the best game of the vear as the Bears displaved power, speed, and hghting spirit in handing the Christians their hrst confer- ence loss, 42-13. As Thanksgiving Day rolled around our Bears were riding the crest of a fi -e game winning streak. Outstanding defensive play bv both clubs kept the game scoreless until early in the fourth Bill Robinette FtiUhack Wallace Gilbert Fullback quarter, when Gene Robinson intercepted a pass and ran 95 yards for the touchdown. As the final gun sounded and the score remained Lenoir Rhvne 6, Ciitawba 0, one of the most colorful and success- ful seasons in the history of Lenoir Rhyne came to a close. Five men from our Bears squad were selected for the All North State Team. Frank Little became the first in the historv of the conference to receive the honor tour straight seasons. Frank Snyder, voted the most valuable plaver bv his teammates, received this honor for the second straight year. First vear men on the All-Star squad were Captain Claude White, Steve Trudnak, and Gene Rob- Jack Gibbony Center B fl S K ET B R L L The 1951 Bear Cagers proved to be one of the best e ' er seen here at Lenoir Rhyne. With such reaulars as Leo Kantorski, Fhp Neighbors, Bull Newsome, and high scoring Bill Wells and Tony Sellari, the short but speedy Bears took conference regular season honors with a record of thirteen wins against three defeats. Entering the North State Tournament as favor- ites, the Bears were upset by a high-spirited Eastern Carolina team; and they met a similar fate at the hands of High Point in the N.A.LB. tournament here at Hickory. Coach Pappy Ham- ilton ' s team could not be considered anything less than a success even with these two post-season defeats. High scoring honors went to All-Conference Tony Sellari, who finished the season with a 15.7 average per game. He was followed closelv by Bill Wells with a 12.5 average, ' ho also was selected on the All-Conference team for his fourth consecu- tive year, This was Sellari ' s second vear on the All-Star squad. Due recognition must be gi ' en to three fine re- serves who capably filled the shoes of the starting five when trouble seemed to be at hand: Jim Lverly, Ed Pa ' lak, and Sammv Accera. Elon was too much for our Bruins as they took conference honors winning the last game of the season over our Bears 2 to 1. Wally Jo Shook led the team with a .331 batding average followed by Cooter Jones at .317. This was Jones ' second year on the All-Star squad, as well as his second consecu- tive year on the All-State team. The Bears were noted for their home run producing ability. Leading this department were Giles Setzer, Paul Jones, Buddy Robinson, Gerry Robinson, and Joe Shook. Well remembered was Setzer ' s two home runs that gave the Bears a victory over Appalachian, and Shook ' s towering home run that made a Bear victory possible over Atlantic Christian. The pitching of Barkley, Frve, Dellinger, and Kantorski enabled the Bruins to take wins over stiff competition. Dellinger pitched a one hitter over Guilford which was undoubtedly the best pitching performance of the year, but credit must be gi ' en to Kantorski, Frve, and Barklev who pitched regularh- or acted in relief roles during the season. The 1951 Bear team should be one of the best. Much is expected from them to keep up v ' ith this year ' s football and basketball squads. Pase One lijindred E ' g jf Seated, first row. Robinson. Paee One Hundred hlevoi TEnnis Tennis is a traditional sport among the girls of Lenoir Rhyne College. Keen competition is always displayed, especially among the advanced players. A period of instruction is given for the beginners at the beginning of the season and then a single elimination tournament for beginners and ad- -anced students is held, from which the champion of each of these groups is determined. L. to r. : Patterson, Kiser, Shealy, and Mitcham. BflSKETBRLL Basketball is the favorite sport of the Lenoir Rhyne girls. During the past season, under the direction of Sue Kiser, who acted as student coach, four strong basketball teams were organized for exciting intramural competition. These were: An- nex freshmen, Mauney freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior. Keenest competition has been displayed between the two freshman teems, but from the standpoint of the observer, the senior girls are most likely to capture the intramural crown; but anything can happen when any of these teams meet on the court. Pa e One Hundred Twelve TumBLinc This season, For the first time in the history of Lenoir Rhyne College, a girl ' s tumbling team has been organized on the campus. Dr. Clyde Deans, faculty adviser, and Amelia Shaw, student director, have done an excellent job of training these girls. This team has created much interest in this district and in the state. In December, the girls traveled to the University of North Carolina and gave a demonstration at the meeting of the North Carolina Physical Education Association. They also made appearances at many of the Catawba country schools and received a very enthusiastic reception. The team specializes in both indi ' idual and group stunts, amazing the spectators with their daring leaps, jumps, and rolls. Building pyramids has been a favorite of the girls, and the ' arc always experimenting with new ideas and new feats. In their attractive red and black uniforms, the girls justify Lenoir Rhyne ' s pride in them. Because of the success of this team, we are sure that tumbling will re- main a part of the girls ' intramural sports in future years. First rotv: Shaw, ThornUm, B. Lcntz, Patterson, Beam, J.
