Joel Hyder The) ' said beautiful things at Joel ' s funeral: They told of his life From altar bov at ten to voung ministerial student at twenty. It was good. The ministers consoled the family and friends With beautiful thoughts of the wonders of God We cannot understand. But enough has not been said: Joel lives— he is not dead! His death is but a challenge: — A challenge to the greatest calling on earth— A challenge to take up the Great Command of Jesus Christ— A challenge to young men— not one— not two— But to many young men To take up the Great Command of Jesus Christ— The call to the GOSPEL MINISTRY! —From ]oel Speaks By Pearl Setzer Deal in mEmoRiflm The mighty reaper has taken his toll Not out on a gun-kept hill, But in these halls of Learning, Where, when He saw that bright fire burning. Said, I alone can appreciate What he talked, and learned, and Fate Gave to him a golden organ. Long nimble fingers, and widespread hand. Where he shall play, and play For Him who took him away. Because his gift was God-given, And God brought him back to heaven. Think not that those fingers will cease. They give back to God his own increase. —Raymond Petrea, Class of ' 52 P. uL Barringer Page Eighty-two UUe cJLiPt Lyur . Under the tutoring of Coaches Stasavich, Hall, Ratterree, Washam and Assistant Coaches Miller and VVinfree, the Bears showed from the beginning that they had what it takes. They took the opener from Erskine vith a 7 to score. The next game was played in Greenville with a pass-happy E.C.T.C. squad. The Bears, favored to win by possibly two touchdowns, showed a fine offense, but E.C.T.C. ' s needle-threading passer couldn ' t miss. Before a homecom- ing crowd in the Catamount ' s new stadium at C ' ullowhee, the Bruins twice clawed their way to within reach of the enemy goal line, only to be stopped by a combination of lady luck and an inspired VV.C.T.C. team. Megginson FuUhack Lenoir Rhyne ' s Bears played what was probably their best game of the year against a strong Elon team. Particularly outstanding in this game was the brilliant line play of the Bears. The Bruin forward wall smothered the Christians ' plays or opened holes in their defense like a well-oiled machine. Re- sult-L.R. 19, Elon 7. Turkey Day is football day, and Lenoir Rhyne played host to Catawba. BEARS SURPRISE APPS FOR NORTH STATE TITLE Considering their non-impressive record in regu- lar season play, sports writers predicted that L.R. ' s Bears would be lucky to get by the first round of tournament plav at Elkin. These predictions failed to take into consideration ' Bear ' fighting spirit and will to win, and the men in red and black forgot to read the papers. The first team to feel the wrath of the Bears was High Point. Then it was Guilford, who the night before had defeated a powerful Catawba five. This brought Coach Emmerson ' s fighting five and a rangv squad of Mountaineers, from Appalachian, together for the final game of the tournament. The Bears showed that their other wins were not merely luck, and they were North State Con- ference Champions. As a result of their exceptionally fine play, Bill Wells was placed on the All-Conference Team and Tony Sellari, D. W. Winstead, and Leo Kantorski were selected for the All-Tournament Team. Tony Sellari was also honored by being named top plaver in the North State Conference. Upper left: Exhausted squad awaits presentation ot awards. Upper ri ht: Final score— L.R. 57, Appalachian 55. Great things are expected this year, however, since Bird Bradw John Tate, Fred Goodson and Fuz Rhyne are back. C. M. Doc Peeler is the onlv absent member of last years squad. Fred Goodson HN Tate Goodson. Rhyne, Peeler, Tate, Brady flTRfl Coach Fred Emmerson s 1949 intramural program was probably the best in the history of Lenoir Rhyne. With the institution of a point system for both incli ' idual and group scoring and careful supervision of playing and scorino, new interest yyas aroused. Two o ' plaques were engraved, one with the name of Rho Sigma Fraternity, the highest scoring group for the second straight year, and the other yyith the name of Vic Rice, representing the Eta Delta Zeta Fraternity, who nosed out Jack Phillips as individual high scorer. Each year the names of the new winners will be added to the plaques.
