We blend the blues and grays ot homesickness, defeats, exams, dis- couragements and petty misunderstandings with the gay reds and yellows of happier times— warm Iriendships, socials, dates, scholas- tic successes. With carefully chosen subjects captured in their lamiliar settings, properly highlighted with color and beauty, our picture emerges— a cherished memory of an e entful vear. Early in the year the Mountain Bears were rated among the top teams in the conference, but not many thought they could beat Catawba or Appalachian. But beat Ca- tawba was what the Bears did for the first time since 1938, and Lenoir Rhyne ' s 14-14 tie with Appalachian was the only blemish on the Mountaineers ' record as they went on to win the Northern Con- ference title. It was the best season since the renewal of football at Lenoir Rhyne as the Bears rolled up a record of six won, three lost, and one tied in their ten gridiron contests. Line play was excellent and the offensive force pushed hard attacks as they amassed 1,358 yards in the ten games. The first sign of a real clicking team came with the routing of Newberry 25-6. Captain John Odom Tackle iXamed on All-Confer- L ' licc, Little All-Southern, and College All-Star teams. Voted most valuable play- er by team-mates W ' iNFREE, WaSHAM, EmMERSON, StASAVICH, SpEARMAN Haywood Martin, Fullback Alternate Captain Gene Miller Tailback Erskine Ratchford Blockins Back Frank Little End Charles Jones End Charles Harrill Bhckina Back Raymond Camp Center John Charles Wingback Senior Football Players Clouse, Jones, Ratchford, Odom Miller, Martin Head Coach Clarence Stasa ' icli and his staft— Gene Winfree, Larry Spearman, Troy Washam and Fred Emmerson— put the Bear team through many drills and practices, rain or shine, and it all paid ofl . And these coaches really had something to work with because the Bruins were determined to win. Three Bruins made the all-conference team chosen from the North State Conference— Frank Little, John Charles and Captain John Odom. C. A. Frve Tailback Clarence Stasavich Head Coach and Physical Education Director ( ,nlc u.u ,c ' s for liner s fw.vs. Charles and Little made the team last year also. But the Bear team was good along the line— especially along the line, which was hailed on all occasions for their excellent defensive work. The linesmen had the best defensive record in the North State Confer- ence, as they held their opponents in the ten games to only sixty-one points. SUmmRRY OF STRTISTICS The Bear team was led in running by John Charles, Haywood Martin, Charlie Ostwalt, Francis Bonasorte and Bill Clouse. Gene Miller was the top passer, although at times he was assisted by C. A. Frye and others. Most active guards: Frank rrr i l I1 W 1948 Football Team R J. jM ' .m mm c i Francis Bonasorte Wiiishnck Carl Wakefield Guciril Snyder, Carl Wakefield, Claude White and George Robinson. Cecil Abee and Raymond Camp held down the center spot. Outstand- ing tackles were Hanley Painter, Lee Confer and limmy Newsome. The determined spirit and fine perform- ance of the entire Bear team was the reason for the outstanding record in 1948. As one writer has said, We wonder if Catawba will ever beat Lenoir Rhyne again? With good Freshman prospects and many returning lettermen, we predict a very successful season next year. Newcomers who saw mucli action were: Rav Withers, Dominick Vallone, Leo Kantorski and Jerry Pless. Don Stafford, Walter Crowell, Bill Helton and Jerry Pless were the pitchers of the 1948 team.
