Your friend is one whom you serve. While you are in college make friends of your schoolmates, your professors, and of all with whom vou come in contact. Friendship is the largest ship in the world. Keep your friendships in repair. If you would have friends be a friend. A man that hath friends must show himself friendly. Jesus measured his lo ' e for his friends in these words: Greater love hath uo iiniu tljaii tliis, that a luan Jay down his life for his frieiuls, Ye are viy friends, if ye do whatsoex er 1 command yon. liencefortli 1 call yon not serx ' ants; for the servant knoxveth not iidrat his lord doeth: hut I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made knoivn unto yo2i. After a five-year absence because of the war, football returned to the campus of Lenoir Rhyne. For most of the students, it was their first chance to witness the Bears in action on the oridiron. Robert Frye Frank FIeafner Ray Von Link Gene Miller foiiN Odum Wade Osborne Hanley Painter Palil Sechrist Don Stafford Pa e One Hundred One The problem of securing a coach was soKed by the selection of Clarence Stasa ' itch who, before he entered the serxice, had served Lenoir Rhvne as line coach. He was assisted by Shore Neal as backfield coach and by Mike Gibson and Troy Washam, two Lenoir Rhyne students. Together with a group of about fifty boys, these coaches gave Lenoir Rhvne a taste of football again. The task was not easy. Lack of experience proved to be the big drawback, but this did not stop the Bruins from finishing the season with a five-six record. Burton Barger, senior tackle from China Grove, was acting captain. He was also voted the most valuable player on the team for the 1946 season, and was chosen the Best-All-Round plaver. Two members of the squad, Burton and Frank Barger, were selected on the All-Conference Team. Burton also recei ' cd honorable mention on the AP Little All-American. Other names of the past that stood out before entering the armed forces again appeared. They included: Frank Barger, Wade Osborne, John DeMarcus, Gene Miller, Whitey Ileafner, Charlie Bost, Ray Von Link, and Don Stafford. For the plavers it ' s been a lot of hard work; for the rest of the students, it ' s been mostly fun, even the throats that were worn out from too much yelling. But all of us enjoyed it and we ' re proud to ha ' e football back on the athletics calendar again. Climaxing the eleven-game schedule was the annual Thanksgiving game with Catawba at Salisbury. Although the Bears went clown in defeat, the game was one of the most interesting of the season. The Bears ' conference record totalled three wins and five losses, winning two from non-conference teams and dropping one. The results of the season were as follows: Lenoir Rhyne 14, A. C.
