“@ JV Cross Country The Cross Country Team of 1980 had only two members returning from last year, Mario Espinosa and Jorge Heredia. But this did not slow the J.V.’s will to excell and come out in front. At league finals the team placed in third place and had two runners come in the top ten; Sergio Hernandez (2nd place) and Rudy Herrera (third place). Head Coach of the Cross Country Team, Dennis James, had the tough job of keeping the team in top condition and spirit. Thanks to this, many of the team’s members improved 100%. The team was also very lucky to have Roaldo Moran, a freshman, who is the team’s hope for next year. Sergio Hernandez and Rudy Herrera also did outstanding throughout the season helping upset Culver City and El Segundo. An- other member of the team was Abel Pomar who was fifth man, an important place that can sometimes de- cide the outcome of a race. 1. Roaldo Moran and Sergio Hernandez—just cruising by. 2. 38 Cross Country Injury upset season Lennox Cross Country team started out on the right foot, but ended on the wrong shoulder. An outstanding athlete and top runner on the squad, Sergio Yepez, in the middle of the season, broke his shoulder. This disaster hurt the team as well as Sergio, because the injury kept him out the rest of the season. The team kept running strong, though, despite this injury placing fourth place in league. At the Fall Sports Banquet awards Sergio Yepez was awarded Most Valuable Player on the team. Jose Garcia won the Coaches Award, while Carlos Culqui won most Improved. na NEN He 4 1. Girls Tennis faces tough com The 1980 girls’ tennis team was a fun team to coach. The girls blended well together and by the end of the season, we had developed a feeling of togetherness. We had a losing record (4-6) but our spirit never died. We were in several matches until the last round of sets. Matches against Lawndale, Leuzinger and Aviation were decided by the results of the last set. League finals saw Jennifer Roles finish 3rd place and Luz Rivera and Tonya Kendrick finish 5th place. We ended our season with an evening out at Farrell’s and a fun filled day at Disneyland. Jennifer Roles was voted the Most Valuable Player and received all league honors. Rowena Manlagnit was the Most Improved Player, while Luz Rivera and Tonya Kendrick received Most Ideal Award. Team members are Seniors: Jennifer Roles, Luz Rivera, Barbara Nikkel, Minerva Moreno, Marilyn Whitley and Diana Buchanan; Juniors: Tonya Kendrick, Julie Cam- pos, Danette Le Beouf and Rowena Manlagnit. —by Marian Kovinick anehi eegneei?
