Lennox’s one moment of victory came when they downed the Hawthorne Cougars 20-16, the first game ever played by the two teams. Although Lennox only won one of their games, they kept their pride by fighting with all they had. Although Lennox only won one game, we should still pay tribute to those who did outstanding on the team. The Most Valuable Player was Kevin Lawrence, and the Most Scored Points went to Anthony Hampton. Letchen Parker, Kevin Lawrence and Graig Gutman were players who made All-League Team. When this young Soph-Frosh team was unable to capture a single victory. The young Lancers came out this year, against a tough Culver City team and tied them 7-7. From there on their competition got a little tougher, and in their pre-season games they fell short. But when the league came the young Soph-Frosh team was almost unstopable averaging over 20 points a game while allowing their opponents less than 10 points. The Lancers worse defeat came against Miraleste. The Lancers needed this win to go into 1st place and come in 1st place in the League. In this gruelling game the Lancers played a great defense, but needed help with their offense, losing the game 23-21. 28 —— RE 1. Pinto takes top volleyball honors again With only Reina Pinto returning from last year, Coach Wheelers 1980 volleyball team set about develop- ing their skills, understanding of the game, and ability to perform together as a team. The girls showed great hustle and togetherness in heartbreaking losses to taller, more experienced squads from Hawthorne and Morning- side. An outstanding athlete and top runner on the squad, Sergio Yepez, in the middle of the season, broke his shoulder. This disaster hurt the team as well as Sergio, because the injury kept him out the rest of the season. The team kept running strong, though, despite this injury placing fourth place in league. At the Fall Sports Banquet awards Sergio Yepez was awarded Most Valuable Player on the team. Jose Garcia won the Coaches Award, while Carlos Culqui won most Improved. na NEN He 4 1. But this did not slow the J.V.’s will to excell and come out in front. At league finals the team placed in third place and had two runners come in the top ten; Sergio Hernandez (2nd place) and Rudy Herrera (third place). Head Coach of the Cross Country Team, Dennis James, had the tough job of keeping the team in top condition and spirit. Thanks to this, many of the team’s members improved 100%. The team was also very lucky to have Roaldo Moran, a freshman, who is the team’s hope for next year. Sergio Hernandez and Rudy Herrera also did outstanding throughout the season helping upset Culver City and El Segundo. The girls blended well together and by the end of the season, we had developed a feeling of togetherness. We had a losing record (4-6) but our spirit never died. We were in several matches until the last round of sets. Matches against Lawndale, Leuzinger and Aviation were decided by the results of the last set. League finals saw Jennifer Roles finish 3rd place and Luz Rivera and Tonya Kendrick finish 5th place. We ended our season with an evening out at Farrell’s and a fun filled day at Disneyland. Jennifer Roles was voted the Most Valuable Player and received all league honors. Rowena Manlagnit was the Most Improved Player, while Luz Rivera and Tonya Kendrick received Most Ideal Award. The way the season went for the team can only be expressed in one word: shocking!’ It was truly to be one of the best seasons ever for a Lennox basketball team but, because of a few complications, the Lancers fell short. Outstanding basketball ability was displayed through- out the year by senior guard, Kevin Rachall, forward Otis Bowen, and juniors such as Wesley Russell, Patrick Gray, and Alfonso Cameron. 48 1. Once again it was the teachers fighting it out against the students for victory. In th is years game it was hard to tell if the donkeys were riding the students or the students riding the donkeys. The score this year was 36-28 in a teacher over student win. The donkeys finally got their sweet revenge against their riders as they were throwing them off left and right and loving every minute. Coach Gutierrez said, ‘‘The JV team is a pleasure to see and coach because they are full of life; they play every game like it was the Super Bowl.” Emotional Season It has been a very exciting season for the Varsity Soccer team this year. Although they lost their first two games, the Lancers didn’t give up. Coach Guttierrez anticipates going to C.I.F. Among the Varsity players are, Goalie Raul Alonso, Ig- nacio Lopez, who made our defensive line one of the best in the league, Samuel Coronado who made our halfback line much more solid, and David Velazquez and Yepez Scrqio who make the opposite defense very nervous. Senior Carlos Culqui led the team as the Number One player who helped the Lancers stay on top of the opposing schools. An- other singles player who did overall was Alphonso Cameron, a junior. On the Doubles Squad, Ruben Magdaleno and Jonathan Erhardt did an outstanding job defeating schools who were supposedly ‘‘superior’’ to Lennox. Overall the Varsity Tennis Team had a successful season even though some matches were lost. Head Coach Marian Kovinick hopes that more people could come out and play tennis and help the Squad be undefeated. 1. Fighting Lancers have high hopes The 1981 Varsity baseball team can best be sum- marized as a young team with great potential. In prac- tice games, the Lancers gathered wins against Char- minade, Cathedral, St. Monica, and Norbonne to enter league compteition with a 4-2 record. The roster in- cluded two sophomores and five juniors, pitchers Fer- nando Fernandez, Timmy Nelson and Craig Gutman are showing fine ability, and are destined for a good future at LHS. Other players displaying talent were Anthony Hampton, Tom Nelson, Florentino Sierra, Leonard Trujillio, Mirk Merencio. The American Field Service is a club designed to learn about other countries, cultures, and ways of life. This year Lennox had the honor of Eunice Essein’s presence as a foreign exchange student from Liberia. Linda Hokenson was chosen last year, to rep- resent Lennox High as a foreign ex- change student, to the country Turkey, over the summer. Mario Espinosa was chosen this year, to attend a foreign country next sum- mer. We wish them all many happy memories. 1) Eunice Essien, Mario Espinosa, and Linda Hokenson discuss the different countries all over the world. 2) AFS Club—Tony Whitley, Wayne Hutchens, Linda Hokenson, Susan Flores, Myrlene Valcinus, Carol Snyder, Julie Campos, Mario Espinosa, Eunice Essien. 3) Club members say ‘The sign says it all!’ 138 2 1. TD A a NY RM Ale eS RD ik Dale aR ln I remember the first day of school, in our freshman year. Everyone and everything looked so big we were known as ‘‘Punky Freshman’ and even though we thought we had graduated into a much higher and sophisticated world, we found ourselves at the bottom of a four place totem pole. We looked up at the sophomores even though they were just one year older than us. And we envied the Juniors—they had cars and seemed to dress in style. We idolized the seniors, and were in awe everytime one - walked into the room. I remember how close we all were then—we needed each others support to make it through each day. I remember how on graduation night we collected the gowns, and felt so honored at being kissed on the cheek by some of the graduating senior guys. Our sophomore year was a lot different. We were still close, yet we started to drift our separate ways. Our junior year showed some improvement. Our class began to come out of the woodwork and unite as one, like we once were. We all stuck together as we went through the emotions of almost being seniors. We made big plans of how the class of 81 was going to go in style. Graduation that year was a little bit more emotional. Even though it wasn’t our graduation many of our boyfriends, girlfriends, brothers and sisters graduated and it threw us into the shock of reality that we were next. On the first day of our senior year, most of us still felt like juniors, yet we knew we had finally reached the top. Now that we are here, now that we are envied by the freshman we realize that our year is only as great as we make it. We were close again like we were when we started as freshman at this small, but wonderful school. We vowed to stick together this year and drift apart no further _ than we already had. This year has brought upon many happy and sad times. We finally realized in the 3rd quarter of our last football game against Miraleste that it was the last time we would all be together cheering for the Lennox Lancers. We ee e - ourselves from crying by reminding ourselves that we still had basketball season. T. last basketball game wasn’t as emotional as we had expected. We creamed El _ Segundo and had a great half-time performance by our pep squad. Graduation is . right around the corner yet we all pretend we don’t notice how quickly time is : passing. Most of us are glad to be graduating, yet there are a few like myself who ARON POD EOL LED EEL GI IEEE A NAH wish they could hold on to this year suspended in time forever. But we all know that we must go on and that the memories we have from these past four years will hold many more memories. Graduation night is here-I walk down the aisle past the flower girls. I see my mother-she snaps a picture of me. As I arrive at my seat, everyone has on great big smiles. I see my fellow classmates filing in. I have a feeling of sadness, yet a feeling of great fulfillment and happiness, as they hand out the diplomas. I feel the end coming near. It is time to turn our tassels ... It seems we've come so far, yet we’ve only just begun . . RA) AAR REAM Nile: $I MG es presented by class of ’81 142 143 Staff and Faculty 1. Charles Armstrong 2. Margie Johnson 3. Edel Alonso 4.
