LenKot 1 Ardys Wumkes, v1ol1n Phyll1s Slmon v1ola, Rozene Courey cello Ruth Schroedermeler, p1ano and Phy1l1s Larson, bass v1ol At the state reglonal contest at V6fm11l1OH the m1xed ensemble Dorothy Drake and Phylhs Larson won DIVISION 1 I'atl11gS and thus the r1ght to enter the reg1onal contest at St Paul May 16 17 and 18 Phyllls Larson also brought hlgh prals XTLIQIC 1V1us1c IS one of the most outstandmg flelds of extra curr1cular act1v1t1es 1n Lennox h1gh school w1th almost half of rhe students par t1c1pat1ng many 1n several phases Over a long per1od of t1me the orchestra composed of both h1gh and grade school stu dents organ1zed 1n 1931 by MISS 1-1enr1etta Smxth 1ts present dlrector has been outstand 1ngly successful both IU contest work and 1n provldmg valuable muslcal tra1n1ng for the stu dents The 1940 orchestra composed of 41 members presented several select1ons at the annual m1d year concert 1n Decemb r 111 coord1nat1on wxth grade and jumor hlgh school vo al and mstru mental groups At the reg1ona1 contest held at Vermllllon Apr1l 20 th1s group rece1ved a sup r1or ratmg The organ1zat1on IS a well balanced group w1th a hne and large representauon of 1nstru m nts MISS Sm1th who has stud1ed v1o11n cello and bass v1ol spec1a11zes 1n the development of the str1ng sect1ons of the orchestra The 1n StfUm8Htat10n IS d1v1ded 1nto the followmg sec t1ons 9 Hrst v1ol1ns 10 second v1ol1ns 4 cellos 3 vlolas 3 bass v1ols 5 clar1nets 2 cornets and one each of trombone French horn saxophone oboe and p1ano The vocal department und r the d1rect1on of Mr Mogck IS d1v1ded 1nt0 three d1v1s1ons the Belcanto club or m1xed chorus the g1rls glee 20 herself and the school when after be1ng chosen to represent the orchestra at the Stolcowslu audltlons, she was one of the few hlgh school entrants to rate 1n the top group and finally aft r an aud1t1on w1th Professor Pepmslcy of the Un1vers1ty of Nlmnesota won the r1ght to attend the fmal aud1t1ons at lV11nneapol1s May 25 where she w1ll be heard by Leopold Stolcow s 1 club and the boys glee club W1th a few excep t1o1s all the members of the glee clubs are repre s nted 1n the chorus a total of 50 members The group 15 approprlately garbed 1n w1ne colored surpl1ces worn over black slclrts for the g1rls and black trousers for the boys Every student Ln the Lennox hlgh school IS U1VCD the opportumty to smg w1th the vocal groups at th beg1nn1ng of the year and to par t1c1pate 1n the annual December concert El1m1nat1on beg1ns soon after the commence ment of the second semester to form the group whlch w1ll eventually enter the sprlng mus1c contests The g1rls glee club IS an outstandmg organ 1zat1on wlth a grow1ng 11st of hlgh ratlngs ln compet1t1ve events Th1s group has attended state muslc contests three t1mes pr1or to 1940 ga1n1ng two excellents and one super1or ratmg The present glee club IS composed of 9 first sopranos 10 second sopranos and 11 contraltos Twenty flve boys rema1ned w1th the boys glee club throughout the present year Thexr record 1n contest work has been constantly 1mprov1ng unt11 th1s year they rece1ved the hlghest rat1ng g1ven to any of the large vocal groups from Lennox 1-11gh School The first tenor sect1on made up almost ent1rely of unchanged VOICES, 1ncludes 10 boys Four boys smg second tenor seven barltone and four bass n W Y i 7Y YW iYY K 9 9 9 9 9 , .
