He ,attended schools in Phoenix, Arizona, before appointment to the U,S. Naval Academy and commissioning as Ensign in June, 1944. , After qualifying for submarine duty, Cdr, Fitch served with Submarine Divi- sion 152 and made two war patrols on USS BUMPER QSS-3335. He also served on USS CABEZON SSS-3345, USS. POMFRET CSS-3915, an USS MANTA EIAGSS-299D before commanding USS AVELLA QSSK-2445, He has been an Assistant Professor of Naval Science at Marquette University and Director of the Enlisted Department at the U,S, Naval Submarine School at New London. Our Executive Officers, Commander E.I. Rosendahl became LENAWEE's Executive Officer in April, 1965, during our deployment. He attended Carroll College, Helena, Montana, as an aviation cadet in 1944. I-le graduated in 1948 and began active duty as Ensign in November, 1944.- He has served as a fighter pilot and Intelligence Officer with Fighter Squadron 13, Jacksonville, as Executive Officer of USS Tanager EAM,-3855: and as Operations Officer of US ,VOGELSANG QDD-8625, Cdr. Rosendahl was an As- sistant Professor of Naval Science at Northwestern University, Executive Offi- cer of USS BEGOR gAPD-1275, a staff officer with PHIBRON , and Commanding Officer of the Naval Station at Coos Bay, Oregon, before assuming his mostrecent previous duty, command of USS PLUCK QMSO-4645. Her Skipper, Captain A.V. Lorentson was born in 1918 in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, at- tended St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota and graduated in 1942 with a B.A. in Economics, ln October, 1942, he entered the USNR Midshipmen's School, New York, New York, and was commis- sioned as an Ensign on February 17, 1943, 1 During World War II he saw duty aboard USS EVANS QDD-5525 as Sonar Officer and later as First Lieutenant. After tours as Executive Officer of the V-5 Unit at South- western University, and at Headquarters, Ninth Naval District, he attended General Line School, Newport, R,l, during 1947f48. His next six years were spent at sea as Executiv,e Officer of USS FOSS QDDE- 59y and as Commanding Officer of USS REQUISITE QAGS-185 and USS ROBERT F. KELLER QDE-4195. ln 1954 Captain Lorentson was Assistant Head, Officer Qualification Branch 'in the Bureau of Naval Personnel, followed by a two year tour on the staff of Commander, Carrier. Division 6. After attending the Armed Forces Staff College he served with the CINCUSNAVEUR staff in London until August, 1960. After tours as Commanding Officer of USS JOHN R. PIERCE CDD-7535 and as Chief Staff Officer for the Commander, Amphibious Squadron 6, he assumed com- mand of LENAWEE in July, 1964. ' Captain Lorentson wears the Bronze Star with Combat V. Presidential Unit Citation, Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal with 5 Stars, American Area Campaign Medal, World War ll Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal with l Star and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. For this she operates with other amphib- ious ships to provide an integrated landing force tailored. to the combat needs of the Marine battalion landing team. As part of Amphibious Squadron One the ship sails in company with attack cargo ships, dock landing ships, high speed transports, command ships, and helicopter assault carriers. In conducting an amphibious landing, LENAWEE's function is to provide boats and troops for the initial assault waves. We can also supply salvage, control and medical boats. Once the initial assault has been made up to 85 vehicles and several hundred tons of equipment and ammunition carried aboard are taken ashore in accordance with the landing plan schedule, or as called for by the troops ashore. The ship also acts as a primary casualty receiving ship, using her two operating theaters and large sick bay. During this cruise LENAW EE operated at maximum alert for weeks at a time, kept at sea by underway replenishment of all vital services, including food and fuel, ready to project her troops ashore within a few hours of receipt of orders. It is this quick reaction time, combined with the firepower and staying ability of a fully equipped battalion, that makes the Amphibious Force such a vital of the Seventh Fleet'-s Pacific seapower. 5 iii jiri? 5-5- 32 'I ,in-.
