Her Skipper, Captain A.V. Lorentson was born in 1918 in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, at- tended St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota and graduated in 1942 with a B.A. in Economics, ln October, 1942, he entered the USNR Midshipmen's School, New York, New York, and was commis- sioned as an Ensign on February 17, 1943, 1 During World War II he saw duty aboard USS EVANS QDD-5525 as Sonar Officer and later as First Lieutenant. After tours as Executive Officer of the V-5 Unit at South- western University, and at Headquarters, Ninth Naval District, he attended General Line School, Newport, R,l, during 1947f48. His next six years were spent at sea as Executiv,e Officer of USS FOSS QDDE- 59y and as Commanding Officer of USS REQUISITE QAGS-185 and USS ROBERT F. KELLER QDE-4195. ln 1954 Captain Lorentson was Assistant Head, Officer Qualification Branch 'in the Bureau of Naval Personnel, followed by a two year tour on the staff of Commander, Carrier. Division 6. After attending the Armed Forces Staff College he served with the CINCUSNAVEUR staff in London until August, 1960. After tours as Commanding Officer of USS JOHN R. PIERCE CDD-7535 and as Chief Staff Officer for the Commander, Amphibious Squadron 6, he assumed com- mand of LENAWEE in July, 1964. ' Captain Lorentson wears the Bronze Star with Combat V. Presidential Unit Citation, Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal with 5 Stars, American Area Campaign Medal, World War ll Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal with l Star and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. Sponsored by Mrs. Olaf Haugen, she received her commissioning exactly a month later at Astoria, Oregon. During World War ll the ship was part of Transport Squadron 16 and served in the Pacific Theater where she took part in the Iwo Jima and Okinawa landings. LENAWEE was present in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945, for the signing of the Japanese surrender, and carried troops of the Army's First Cavalry Division to Yokohama for the occupation of the Japanese homeland. From November, 1945, to March, 1946, she took part in Operation Magic Carpet, which returned thousands of servicemen home from the front. The ship was placed in mothballs follow- ing Magic Carpet, but was recalled to active duty with the outbreak of hostilities in Korea. While operating in the Korean Theater she aided in the evacuation of Korean partisans to islands below the 38th parallel and was station ship in lnchon harbor when the final truce was signed in July, 1953. ln February, 1955, LENAWEE took part in the evacuation of Chinese Nationalists from the Tachen islands off the Chinese Coast. On her first trip to Keelung,iD Formosa, she carried 3,800 civilians and later evacuated 1,200 soldiers. As a unit of Amphibious Squadron One the ship has made five deployments with the Seventh Fleet's Amphibious Force in the Western Pacific. since 1958. On these cruises she has participated in full scale assault rehersals including cold weather operations and the largest amphibious exercise since World War ll. On most deployments, including the.-1964 65 cruise, the ship was required to be ready to land her embarked troops on only a few hours' standby. , After leaving from a yard overhaul in Seattle, Washington, in May, 1964, LENAWEE rejoined Phibron One. ln the summer of 1964 she provided amphibious training for more than 2,500 Marines, Midshipmen and Marine Reservists. During her career the ship has been awarded the following medals: American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Victory Medal of World War ll, Navy Occupation Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with 3 Stars, the Ulilted Nations Service Medal, National Defe11SG Service Medal and most recently, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for service in the Viet Nam area. , -2 1 - 2 33 , is ll . .. . ,... ------ D+--'f --. Naval Academy and commissioning as Ensign in June, 1944. , After qualifying for submarine duty, Cdr, Fitch served with Submarine Divi- sion 152 and made two war patrols on USS BUMPER QSS-3335. He also served on USS CABEZON SSS-3345, USS. POMFRET CSS-3915, an USS MANTA EIAGSS-299D before commanding USS AVELLA QSSK-2445, He has been an Assistant Professor of Naval Science at Marquette University and Director of the Enlisted Department at the U,S, Naval Submarine School at New London. Our Executive Officers, Commander E.I. Rosendahl became LENAWEE's Executive Officer in April, 1965, during our deployment. He attended Carroll College, Helena, Montana, as an aviation cadet in 1944. I-le graduated in 1948 and began active duty as Ensign in November, 1944.- He has served as a fighter pilot and Intelligence Officer with Fighter Squadron 13, Jacksonville, as Executive Officer of USS Tanager EAM,-3855: and as Operations Officer of US ,VOGELSANG QDD-8625, Cdr.
