Sponsored by Mrs. Olaf Haugen, she received her commissioning exactly a month later at Astoria, Oregon. During World War ll the ship was part of Transport Squadron 16 and served in the Pacific Theater where she took part in the Iwo Jima and Okinawa landings. LENAWEE was present in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945, for the signing of the Japanese surrender, and carried troops of the Army's First Cavalry Division to Yokohama for the occupation of the Japanese homeland. From November, 1945, to March, 1946, she took part in Operation Magic Carpet, which returned thousands of servicemen home from the front. The ship was placed in mothballs follow- ing Magic Carpet, but was recalled to active duty with the outbreak of hostilities in Korea. While operating in the Korean Theater she aided in the evacuation of Korean partisans to islands below the 38th parallel and was station ship in lnchon harbor when the final truce was signed in July, 1953. ln February, 1955, LENAWEE took part in the evacuation of Chinese Nationalists from the Tachen islands off the Chinese Coast. On her first trip to Keelung,iD Formosa, she carried 3,800 civilians and later evacuated 1,200 soldiers. As a unit of Amphibious Squadron One the ship has made five deployments with the Seventh Fleet's Amphibious Force in the Western Pacific. since 1958. On these cruises she has participated in full scale assault rehersals including cold weather operations and the largest amphibious exercise since World War ll. On most deployments, including the.-1964 65 cruise, the ship was required to be ready to land her embarked troops on only a few hours' standby. , After leaving from a yard overhaul in Seattle, Washington, in May, 1964, LENAWEE rejoined Phibron One. ln the summer of 1964 she provided amphibious training for more than 2,500 Marines, Midshipmen and Marine Reservists. During her career the ship has been awarded the following medals: American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Victory Medal of World War ll, Navy Occupation Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with 3 Stars, the Ulilted Nations Service Medal, National Defe11SG Service Medal and most recently, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for service in the Viet Nam area. , -2 1 - 2 33 , is ll . .. . ,... ------ D+--'f --.
