Not only was the ammunition loaded in what Naval Ordnance Facility personnel called a record 52 hours, but it was off-loaded entirely over an assault beach in landing craft. No casualties resulted from the venture into ammunition shipping, despite the problems inherent in such cargo. Off-loading the two kiloton's worth of' explosives by boat at the Chu Lai beachhead proved to be one of the longest continuous operations engaged in by the ship during her deployment, Boat crews were on call and hatch crews worked around the clock for almost a week. The ship's boat group put in one of the major efforts .of the cruise by un- loading nearly 20 per cent of the ammu- nition in Papa boats -- at only two tons a boat load. All hands had a new respect for the men who man the fleet's AEs with their explosive cargoes when the word was finally passed, Now the Smoking Lamp is lighted in all authorized spaces.
