Not only was the ammunition loaded in what Naval Ordnance Facility personnel called a record 52 hours, but it was off-loaded entirely over an assault beach in landing craft. No casualties resulted from the venture into ammunition shipping, despite the problems inherent in such cargo. Off-loading the two kiloton's worth of' explosives by boat at the Chu Lai beachhead proved to be one of the longest continuous operations engaged in by the ship during her deployment, Boat crews were on call and hatch crews worked around the clock for almost a week. The ship's boat group put in one of the major efforts .of the cruise by un- loading nearly 20 per cent of the ammu- nition in Papa boats -- at only two tons a boat load. All hands had a new respect for the men who man the fleet's AEs with their explosive cargoes when the word was finally passed, Now the Smoking Lamp is lighted in all authorized spaces. V p r ' , H 4 ff we ZS! y W f, f, , When force i needed ashore Lenawee became on of the first ships to participate in over-the beach assault landings in Viet Nam where she and sister ships of Amphibious Squadron One conducted ai quick reaction landing to reinforce the vital airbase at Da Nang, Viet Nam, Within 48 hours a full Marine Battalion Landing Team was ashore and dug in on the perimeter around the -base, with all its supporting equipment, supplies, 'ammunition and vehicles, ' a This landing was accomplished without benefit of an in-port period following the ship's participation in Exercise Jungle Drum Ill and good will visit to Bangkok, Thailand. Lenawee made the assault with Marines and equipment backloaded over the Sai Buri River beaches following a week's operation ashore. From Da Nang, Lenawee proceeded up the coast to the mouth of the Song Hue River, where the ship's boats helped land another battalion carried aboard other ships. The boat crews were required to ferry all troops and their equipment l2 miles upriver to the city of Hue, subject to possible sniper fire along the river. For participation in the Da Nang and Hue operations, members of the ship's boat group were authorized to receive a month's special pay for hostile fire. The ship's third assault landing onlthe coast of Viet Nam was the large initial landing at Chu Lai, the biggest operational assault since lnchon, Korea, in 1950. In what is now a major airbase complex, but was. then only open coastal plains and mountains, a large force of Marines and Seabees cleared the area of major Viet Cong resistance and built a full size tactical airfield. Lenawee made a second call at Chu Lai a few weeks later, delivering 2,001 tons of ammunition to the troops ashore, who were still engaged in sporadic fire fights with guerilla units. After this assign- ment Lenawee commenced prepartations for returning to San Diego, having been for a few months a key element in projecting ashore the sharp point of United States foreign policy Southeast Asia.
