For this she operates with other amphib- ious ships to provide an integrated landing force tailored. to the combat needs of the Marine battalion landing team. As part of Amphibious Squadron One the ship sails in company with attack cargo ships, dock landing ships, high speed transports, command ships, and helicopter assault carriers. In conducting an amphibious landing, LENAWEE's function is to provide boats and troops for the initial assault waves. We can also supply salvage, control and medical boats. Once the initial assault has been made up to 85 vehicles and several hundred tons of equipment and ammunition carried aboard are taken ashore in accordance with the landing plan schedule, or as called for by the troops ashore. The ship also acts as a primary casualty receiving ship, using her two operating theaters and large sick bay. During this cruise LENAW EE operated at maximum alert for weeks at a time, kept at sea by underway replenishment of all vital services, including food and fuel, ready to project her troops ashore within a few hours of receipt of orders. It is this quick reaction time, combined with the firepower and staying ability of a fully equipped battalion, that makes the Amphibious Force such a vital of the Seventh Fleet'-s Pacific seapower. 5 iii jiri? 5-5- 32 'I ,in-.
