Sponsored by Mrs. Olaf Haugen, she received her commissioning exactly a month later at Astoria, Oregon. During World War ll the ship was part of Transport Squadron 16 and served in the Pacific Theater where she took part in the Iwo Jima and Okinawa landings. LENAWEE was present in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945, for the signing of the Japanese surrender, and carried troops of the Army's First Cavalry Division to Yokohama for the occupation of the Japanese homeland. From November, 1945, to March, 1946, she took part in Operation Magic Carpet, which returned thousands of servicemen home from the front. The ship was placed in mothballs follow- ing Magic Carpet, but was recalled to active duty with the outbreak of hostilities in Korea. While operating in the Korean Theater she aided in the evacuation of Korean partisans to islands below the 38th parallel and was station ship in lnchon harbor when the final truce was signed in July, 1953. ln February, 1955, LENAWEE took part in the evacuation of Chinese Nationalists from the Tachen islands off the Chinese Coast. On her first trip to Keelung,iD Formosa, she carried 3,800 civilians and later evacuated 1,200 soldiers. As a unit of Amphibious Squadron One the ship has made five deployments with the Seventh Fleet's Amphibious Force in the Western Pacific. since 1958. On these cruises she has participated in full scale assault rehersals including cold weather operations and the largest amphibious exercise since World War ll. On most deployments, including the.-1964 65 cruise, the ship was required to be ready to land her embarked troops on only a few hours' standby. , After leaving from a yard overhaul in Seattle, Washington, in May, 1964, LENAWEE rejoined Phibron One. ln the summer of 1964 she provided amphibious training for more than 2,500 Marines, Midshipmen and Marine Reservists. During her career the ship has been awarded the following medals: American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Victory Medal of World War ll, Navy Occupation Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with 3 Stars, the Ulilted Nations Service Medal, National Defe11SG Service Medal and most recently, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for service in the Viet Nam area. , -2 1 - 2 33 , is ll . .. . ,... ------ D+--'f --. For this she operates with other amphib- ious ships to provide an integrated landing force tailored. to the combat needs of the Marine battalion landing team. As part of Amphibious Squadron One the ship sails in company with attack cargo ships, dock landing ships, high speed transports, command ships, and helicopter assault carriers. In conducting an amphibious landing, LENAWEE's function is to provide boats and troops for the initial assault waves. We can also supply salvage, control and medical boats. Once the initial assault has been made up to 85 vehicles and several hundred tons of equipment and ammunition carried aboard are taken ashore in accordance with the landing plan schedule, or as called for by the troops ashore. The ship also acts as a primary casualty receiving ship, using her two operating theaters and large sick bay. During this cruise LENAW EE operated at maximum alert for weeks at a time, kept at sea by underway replenishment of all vital services, including food and fuel, ready to project her troops ashore within a few hours of receipt of orders. It is this quick reaction time, combined with the firepower and staying ability of a fully equipped battalion, that makes the Amphibious Force such a vital of the Seventh Fleet'-s Pacific seapower. 5 iii jiri? 5-5- 32 'I ,in-. V p r ' , H 4 ff we ZS! y W f, f, , When force i needed ashore Lenawee became on of the first ships to participate in over-the beach assault landings in Viet Nam where she and sister ships of Amphibious Squadron One conducted ai quick reaction landing to reinforce the vital airbase at Da Nang, Viet Nam, Within 48 hours a full Marine Battalion Landing Team was ashore and dug in on the perimeter around the -base, with all its supporting equipment, supplies, 'ammunition and vehicles, ' a This landing was accomplished without benefit of an in-port period following the ship's participation in Exercise Jungle Drum Ill and good will visit to Bangkok, Thailand. Lenawee made the assault with Marines and equipment backloaded over the Sai Buri River beaches following a week's operation ashore. From Da Nang, Lenawee proceeded up the coast to the mouth of the Song Hue River, where the ship's boats helped land another battalion carried aboard other ships. The boat crews were required to ferry all troops and their equipment l2 miles upriver to the city of Hue, subject to possible sniper fire along the river. For participation in the Da Nang and Hue operations, members of the ship's boat group were authorized to receive a month's special pay for hostile fire. The ship's third assault landing onlthe coast of Viet Nam was the large initial landing at Chu Lai, the biggest operational assault since lnchon, Korea, in 1950. In what is now a major airbase complex, but was. then only open coastal plains and mountains, a large force of Marines and Seabees cleared the area of major Viet Cong resistance and built a full size tactical airfield. Lenawee made a second call at Chu Lai a few weeks later, delivering 2,001 tons of ammunition to the troops ashore, who were still engaged in sporadic fire fights with guerilla units. After this assign- ment Lenawee commenced prepartations for returning to San Diego, having been for a few months a key element in projecting ashore the sharp point of United States foreign policy Southeast Asia. Not only was the ammunition loaded in what Naval Ordnance Facility personnel called a record 52 hours, but it was off-loaded entirely over an assault beach in landing craft. No casualties resulted from the venture into ammunition shipping, despite the problems inherent in such cargo. Off-loading the two kiloton's worth of' explosives by boat at the Chu Lai beachhead proved to be one of the longest continuous operations engaged in by the ship during her deployment, Boat crews were on call and hatch crews worked around the clock for almost a week. The ship's boat group put in one of the major efforts .of the cruise by un- loading nearly 20 per cent of the ammu- nition in Papa boats -- at only two tons a boat load. All hands had a new respect for the men who man the fleet's AEs with their explosive cargoes when the word was finally passed, Now the Smoking Lamp is lighted in all authorized spaces. Captain. R. W, Clark, during Operation Jungle Drum Ill and the early May Da Nang landings. The ship provided staff quarters, spaces and communications while he and his staff were aboard. Goodwill Crewmen participated in the pres- identfs People to People program during the cruise by distributing toys, books, gum and kites to children of the I-long Kong Boys and Girls Association, and by donating blood to the I-long Kong chapter of the International Red Cross. The ship also carried lO tons of schoolbooks and medical supplies destined for use in the Philippines and in Viet Nam. The supplies were off loaded at Subic Bay for redis- tribution after being brought by Lenawee from San Diego.
