l i LENAPE MERMAID PLACE THIRD LEAGU Only three years in existence, our mermaids swam into third place in the South Jersey Swim League, propelled by the coaching of Miss Barbara Ferg, the subtle prompting of manager Debbie Digby, and the gentle eadership of Captain Lynn Urain. Casting aside inner tubes, nose plugs, water wings and extra seconds, these competitive swimmers man- aged to stay aiioat at least one hour a day until their water-logged bodies bubbled to the bottom. Weathering low tides during the first part of the season, the girls retained their high spirits to drown Merchantville in a 45-31 victory. Pennsauken, Haddonfield and Haddon Heights also bowed to Le- nape's improved times and speedy swimmers. Gail Bende, one of the finest swimmers in the state, broke two league records in an excelptional ap- pearance against Cherrgf Hill. Keeping ta es on Gail were Darcy Jones and ue Lester. Performances during practices foretold a promising season to end with a winning record led by mascot Wart. Donna Chasteen executes the backstroke and Carol Gibbs com- petes in the butterliy. ROW I: K. Cleary, E. Miller, J. Weaver, C. Walter, C. Kidder, P. Eder, S. Lester, D. Jones, G. Bende L. Urian. ROW 2. R. Hickey, G. Carpenter, S. Houck, K. Lane, K. Higgins, C. Gibbs, P. Backstroke is the specialty of Bill 7-3 RECORD FOR THE BOYS' SWI TEAM Mr. Debolt coached our mermen to an excellent 7-3 record this season. The three year-old team has progressed immense ly since its beginnings, and this year, through its line record of dual meet erformances, will be able to compete at the State meet held in Princeton. Defeating Haddonlield in a de cisive victory, the swimming Indians brought home a third place in their league. Harry Bauman, in the 200 yard freestyle and butteril had their respective races of the breaststroke and sprints. Most im pressive, however, was our individual medley team, losing only through disqualiiications. With the team losing only a few seniors through gradua tion this year, next season appears to be very strong Carothers. Sue Lester demonstrates the freestyle. 1 78 a very successful season as did Brian Cook and Jeff Gillian in Ed Klarman and Brian Cook display their individual style
