O Cha ter Grandmother p . Mrs. Emmert Prasse.Sec- tion Mother, Mrs. John Rampenthal, Jr. Chapter Mother and Father, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence liar- baeh. Future Homemakers of America Membership in the Future Homemakers of America is made up of girls who have studied or are studying homemaking in high school. Our goals are: 1-To promote better family living. 2-To help members understand the opportunities ofaen to them in the field of home economics. 3-To understand our neighbors both at home and abroa . 4-Lo provide training or each chapter member for participation in home, school and community airs. Our colors are red and white symbolizing youth and purity, our flower is the red rose, and our motto is Toward New Horizons. We work together or better and happier home life for everyone. We think that helping to make happy homes now and in the future is the most important thing that you can do for demo- cracy. Plans for a successful 1956-1957 ear in the Lena Cha ter of the Future Homemakers of America were started early. During the first week of July, Carolin Williams, Vallrey Harbach, and Mrs. Marilyn Kane attended the National F.H.A. convention held at the Conrad Hilton Hotel in Chicago. Forty-seven states as well as Hawaii, Alaska and the Phillipine Islands were represented and after a week of meetings, our members came home with new ideas and lots of enthusiasm. Anna Jane White attended the State Lea ership Training school at Lake Bloomington where she was trained to be an efficient president. During the third week in August, the program committee consisting of Susan Staton, Eleanor Rampenthal, Janet Biesemeier and the club officers met and planned a program with Look at Vocations as our theme. At the beginning of the 1956-1957 year. our chapter had sixteen members with chapter degrees and 29 members with junior degrees. At the beginning o the school year we entertained the Freshmen girls and other interested high school girls at a share a dish picnic supper at the Lena Community park. Fred Werhane gave an illustrated talk on Sweden, showing pictures of the royal palace, a mine viewed from a mountain, old churches, picnics, and typical farm and country fair scenes at our October meeting. The Leadership Training School was held in Molmt Carroll October 2nd. Lena was presented with outstanding chapter award and the international good-will certificate. Carolin Williams, Vallrey Harbach and Mrs. Kane participated in the skit-report on the National F.H.A. convention. Lena members who attend- ed were: Anna Jane White, Vallrey Harbach, CarolinWilliams, Barbara Medeke, Susan Brott, Joan Prasse, Linda Huneke, Mrs. Marilyn Kane, Mrs. Lawrence Harbach, Mrs. Emmert Prasse, and Mrs. John Ram- penthal, Jr., section mother. October 31, at an all high awards assembly Mr. Jack Kauffman presented the Lena Chapter with the Outstanding chapter award plaque for Section 23. The F.H.A. and F.F.A. sponsored an all school autumn theme square dance on October 12. Jack O' Lanterns and corn stalks were used to carry out the theme. Mrs. Doroth Shaw was the caller. A vocal duet by Joan Prasse and LindaAuman and amusing skits given by Barbara Mecileke AElvis Presley imitationjg Sharon Raders 1Nothing, a perfume adj, and Marilyn Thomasson accompanie by the band1Spike Jones renditionj were intermission entertainment. Refreshments of cokes and oatmeal cookies were served. At our third meeting Mr. W.W, Stukenberg talkedon retailing and buying vocations, and demonstrated to the sixty-four club members present the difference in quality and price of clothes. Barbara Medeke, Susan Brott, Sharon Raders and Charlotte Stouffer modeled car coats, skirts, sweaters and sports outfits. Seventy-six members enjoyed a conducted educational tour through W.T. Rawleigh factory in Free- port, November 21. Large printing presses, huge vats of shampoo, large uantities of seasonings, stamp- ingout ofpllls, pressing o soap, filling rat poison cans and shaving cream tiles, makin of waxes, pressure vanilla processing vats, and the chemistry lab amazed the members. Mrs. Donald Hugson, Mrs. Lawrence Harbach, and Mrs. Robert Kane chaperoned the tour. For a Thanksgiving treat to residents in the Ortiz home, the F.H,A, members made gold and silver cornucopia nut cups with cone and yarn decorations. They were filled with nuts and delivered in time for Thanksgiving dinner. Green candles and evergreen decorated the tables for the Christmas pot-luck dinner held at noon on December 18 in the homemaking room. Meat loaf, scalloped potatoes, vegetable gelatin salad, pickles, rolls, fruit pie and milk were a change from a cold sack lunch. Gifts were exchanged between the girls and their sponsor and mother and randmother. At the formal canmielight ceremony 27 girls were initiated by officers into the Lena chapter January 8. Parliamentary procedure was demonstrated in a skit by parliamentarian Susan Brott, assisted by Susan Staton, Vallrey Harbach, Carolin Williams, Karen Niemeier and Diana Hughes. Mrs. Edith Huffman, Steph- enson County ome adviser, talked on careers in homemaking for girls with or without a college education. Among the many interesting careers Mrs. Huffman mentioned were: hotel food manager, work in test kitchens, dressmaker, designer, model, sellin household equipmentfor high school graduates, commercial food demonstrator, buyer, ress designer, professional shopper, journalist, radio and T. V. home economist, teacher and home demonstration agent for college graduates. Special guests in our February meeting were members of Warren and Pearl City chapters. His leadership inspired Lena Win Basketball ln one of the most exciting games of the season the Lena Lions marched to the Stephen- son County Championship last week in Freeport by winning over the Orangevillc Broncos 51- 48. Lena knocked down three teams to take the top honor which has been their goal. Much credit should be given to the Lions' Coach Robert Albrecht who has done a magnificent job with these fine sportsmen. Lena in the first night of ac- tion was given no trouble by the Durand Bulldogs whom they de- feated 49-39. Jim Wachlin was ace scorer for Lena with 16 points. Then the second night Lena walked over Pearl City 54- ' Roger Uhe and Larry Henrik- sen, each with 14 points. ln the final game the Lions showed tremendous ball handl- ing and shooting to hand Orangeville their second defeat of their entire season 51-48. Orangeville, favored to win the tournament, was a saddened group of players after a hard but futile struggle. Those elected were Linda Brechtel, Linda Huneke, and Sharon Raders. The Varsity cheerleaders, LindaAuman, Vallrey Harbach and Joan Prasse, were re-elect- ed to join Barbara Medeke. Previously the student council had discussed cheerleading elections and their proposals were presented to the entire student body. It was decided that a girl once elected for t e Fresh- Soph or Varsity squad would not have to be el- ected for the same squad the following year. Thus a freshman who was elected would be on the Fresh-Soph team for two years but would have to be elected again for the Varsity team. cheers and supported the team in victory or defeat. This idea culminated at a Board of Education meeting when Mr. Albrecht was authorized to purchase football equipment for 36 boys from both Lena and Winslow with an eight-week fun- damental football program to be Started next fall. This is a step in the right direction of tmiting the two high schools in the unit for the eventual com- pletion of the new high school.
