We, the graduating class ot '56, have seen some of the changes in tnc educational picture. At the beginning ot the twentieth century only academic work was otTered. Now some titty-six years later we have the advantages of vocational training in the business, homemalcing, agriculture and mechanics courses ottered. The schools ot today after many extracurricular activities to help a student become better qualified to meet the problems which arise everyday. For in- stance, most schools have clubs and other organizations which students can attend. This year seniors have had a part on numerous committees. These com- mittees chose Lyle Renniclc to be official photographer tor our senior pictures and the yearbook. They also chose their announcements and gitts. Commit- tees met and planned the banquet, Sneak Day, baccalaureate, and graduation. These were not all the activities, for students participated in the Senior Play, Tiger House, and enioyed the Junior-Senior Prom given in our honor. As we look ahead some htty years tram now, we can see an altogether ditterent program in education, tor this is an atomic age. We see more science, engineering and mathematics courses ottered to lceep pace with scientific discoveries. We see spaceships, rockets and missiles traveling around the universe, and the solar and atomic energy in industry taking the place of gases and electricity in the manufacturing ot cars, airplanes, and labor saving devices tor a more comfortable living. All the forms at transportation will be operated with these new forms ot energy, Homes will be made modern and convenient with inventions of every description, thus saving many hours for more leisure time. This is foresight, of course, but people ot one hundred years ago probably wouldn't believe their eyes if they saw people flying in this century. Yes, there must be young people ot today preparing for these scientitic iobs at tomorrow. For the nation will depend more than ever on these types ot iobs during both peace time and war. BURROWS The Class ot T956 realizes the foresight ot the members ot the Board of Trustees of the Lemoore l-ligh School when they planned the construction and secured the financial support tor the erection of the tirst buildings on our campus in T924 and we vvish to express our appref ciation at this time tor the increased educational facilities which have been aftorded us in T956 Not only have the trustees made provisions to meet the require- ments ol the expanded curricula olterings, but they have provided an adequate teaching statt tor instruction in a greater variety ot subiect otclerings. They have also realized our need tor greater guidance to help us to adiust better to the increased demands of society in this technological age. We are appreciative, also, ot the tact that this tarsightedness ot the trustees has not only beneited us, but will make possible increased educational opportunities tor tuture students ot our high school because ot the longfrange plans which are already being torrnulated. Thus have the trustees spanned space in their progressive ideas for us, the students ot Lemoore High School. 36 to ,ww reef a40 ' M '-curl aw' . ren . Krid Supelllx Dis Ilellw' w. it IMPLICATIONS GF A NEW ERA Space, the theme of the i956 edition of the Nuntius, iimplies that we are about to enter a new technological era. ln. a brief interval we have witnessed tremendous social and economic acl- vancement. The development ot transportation by air and its effects upon our economy has brought a challenge to our already complex society. Automation will make striking changes in our industrial system. Slowly or rapidly, industry will em- ploy the use ot more automatic machinery. What will be the effect of these changes upon our way of lite? Certainly there will be a great demand for highly trained and highly skilled workers. General educational, cultural and recreational programs will be subject to expansion and revision in order to prepare people tor this new era Even though we face drastic changes in our society, strength ot character, strength ot mind, and strength ot body will still be the main obiectives at our educa- tional program. The present generation must meet realities with intelligence and must be able to relate its efforts to goals which have been set forthe future. Perhaps at no time in history has the need for men ot vision been so great. If our youth have acquired strength ot character and purpose and strength to do what they know is right, then they will find success and enjoyment in their work and in their life. May the graduates of I956 experience success and enioyment. 37 LEONARD R. WARD Principal 1 wif .Iii . r -' . ' ' its-w-use ' L'-AL SPACE Space is an appropriate topic for this year's annual. Men's minds have turned to such things as space ships, trips to the moon and man-made heavenly bodies. Just recently it was announced that our knowledge of the universe had reached out far beyond that which was formerly iust imagination. Space symbolizes our times. Take the atom, it occupies space and, therefore, has mass. The tissionability ot this mass releases tremendous energy. This is changing the thinking, and the social and physical environment ot all people. The possibilities of these changes may go tar beyond our present comprehension. It is into this type of world the class of '56 will graduate. lt is a marvelous world, one with many opportunities that will demand the abilities and talents of all our graduates. F, s . This satellite will set its orbit around the earth and carry instruments and devices for gathering more information about atmospheric den- sity and temperature, variations in the earth's crust, meteorites, ultraviolet and cosmic rays. This will be another step in man's efforts to expand his knowl- edge about the universe. What changes this will affect in the future for you who are about to grad- uate no one is certain. Therefore, if each student prepares himself to the best of his ability, he will be better able to meet the challenge of the future. i DEA OF GIRLS EDITH MEYER American Government, Senior Problems 5 Edith Landis, secretary at- tendance office A CHALLE GE The progress made by the ingenuity of man during the last one hundred years is but the begin- ning of what will be done in the next few decades. The challenge is as great or greater today to our young people. This is especially true of our young women, for much can be and has been accomplished because of their faith, their understanding, their courage, and their inspiration. Their leadership is still one of spiritual uplift, and, in addition, young women are also taking an active part in the scien- tific development of today. Today even space is being probed by the in- ventive genius of our young people. Nothing seems impossible. The opportunities for young women as well as for young men are as limitless as space is boundless. ,f - lf, ,,,.e-- '-w W N N.: if f: ,. -. . X X K SY- - af Counselor ,- . Here the students were trained for their ditterent offices and, with the assistance of their individual adviser, arranged their organization activities for the school year. The Student Council has accomplished a nuinber of things for the benefit of the students and faculty. The price of student body cards for the teachers was lowered from 32.50 to 5l.OO. This will be in effect at the starting of the school year '56. We coped with this problem by selling food and refreshments in the concession booths at the football games played at home. Later in the year more money was raised by selling decals, as was done last year. The convention at Fresno was attended by a delegation from the membership of our federation. The .nembers received their torch pins and wore them with pride. The year began with the Sort Joaquin Valley Girls' Athletic Associations Convention held in Clovis. Six of our oflhcers attended and obtained many ideas for our G.A.A. meetings. The hrst sport of the year was volleyball. Eight teams entered the competition in which a iunior team captained by Betty Fredrick was victorious. Players on the winning team were Yvonne d'Artenay, Lucille Fagundes, Lavonia Davis, Wanda Hartsfield, Ruth Holliday, Kathy Mar- tin, Janelle Neal, Pat McDowell, Mary Lancaster, Barbara Silviera, and Delores Mello. The maior sports played during the year were basketball, speed- a-way, softball, badminton, and volleyball. The Coalinga G.A.A. sponsored the first play day of the year in November. Thirty of our members attended and enioyed volleyball in ' the morning and froze while swimming in the afternoon. The l-lanford and Laton G.A.A.'s were the hostesses at our next two play days, speed-a-way and a hobo party. On October 22, the gym was transformed into an autumn scene for the backward dance, Harvest Moon. Alice Wilson was the social chairman in charge of the successful and well-attended dance. In December, a large group of G.A.A. members enioyed a very successful slumber party in the gym-no one slept. ln the spring the juniors honored the graduating seniors with a banquet, to which all members were invited. At this time awards were given to the girls who had earned them, and new ofticers were installed. Over sixty boys who had earned their Block L in athletics were eligible for the organiza- tion. This year the constitution has been re- vised and the qualihcations for earning a Block L have been raised, which will make it a greater honor to earn on L. Dues of fifty cents a member will be assessed. Plans are being made for other L Association activitiesg such as, interclass games, track meets, and other athletic events. The money derived from dues and ac- tivities will be used for an annual trip to an outstanding athletic contest each year, starting perhaps next year. The sport has become well organized ending each season with a large swim meet tor all small schools with approximately 19 schools par- ticipating. We will be swimming in the Shasta league this year, and according to all indications should win the league championship. The league meet will be held in our own pool on May l l. As the Nuntius goes to press before swim- ming has started, it is hard to predict what is in store tor the team this year. Our antic- ipations are good, though. Eight girls, who have earned letters in the past years, will be swimming, and the prospective new team members look good. The returning boys promise to be as strong as last year. The Rally Committee was divided into squads consisting at eight or ten members who had specific duties tor each game, in- cluding decorating the stands, taking tickets at the gate or door, acting as a Welcoming committee to meet visiting players' and spectators' buses, and planning and pre- senting rallies.
