He was elected to the Board of Trustees in 1926 and served in this capacity until March 12, 1937 when he became building in- spector for the construction of the Avenal High School. Since the construction of the Avenal High School, Fred has served as building inspector for the music build- ing, the pool and the agricultural building at the Lemoore High School, and the pool and auditorium build- ing at the Avenal High School. ln addition to these duties, Fred has been in charge ot general maintenance ot the two school plants, Painting, plumbing, and electrical work has come under his supervision. Fred Bergier announced his retirement on May 1, 1954. We wish to express our appreciation to him for his interest in our schools. We fully realize that he has contributed much in developing the fine facilities we have at the Lemoore High School. We wish him many years of happy and healthy life. in appreeiatinn uf service With unselfish devotion in meeting the needs of the young people of the Lemoore High School District and of Kings County, Miss Mildred Logan has served as school nurse in the Lemoore Elementary School and in the High School for the past seven years. Interest in the welfare of young people has been reflected in Miss Logan's successful efforts to secure facili- ties for a well-balanced lunch program for the Lemoore Elementary School children. Not only in Lemoore but also throughout Kings County Miss Logan has served untiringly. She has been an active member on the Kings County Committee on Health Education as well as on the health education com- mittee of the state. Through her efforts the Crippled Children's Society of Kings County was founded, and she now serves as iunior past president and charter member of the Board. Interest in the exceptional child has led to her work on the Kings County unit of the International Council for Exceptional Children, We appreciate Miss Logan's devoted service to the community and her successful endeavors to improve the health of students and to bring greater happiness into our lives. We know that, although Miss Logan is retiring from school duties, she will still serve the community graciously and unselfishly. Thus solemnized and softened, death is mild And terrorless as this serenest night: Here could I hope, like some inquiring child Sporting on graves, that death did hide from human sight Sweet secrets, or beside its breathless sleep That loveliest dreams perpetual watch did keep. The following men served as trustees: J. H. Thomsen, L. W. Sronce, E. G. Sellers, H. L. Jennings, R. E. McKenna, John E. Kurtz. The Board selected six lots at Fox and B streets as the site for the original school. Since l90l the various Boards of Trustees have kept pace with changing conditions. Fifty years ago a library of l0O books and a science room were added to the new school. In l908 an athletic field was provided, and a manual training building was constructed. ln l923 the people of the District voted S325,000 in bonds to construct the present school building. Since i925 the music and arts building, additions to the original shop building, the pool and the agriculture building have been added to the original school plant. The total valuation of the present plant is now in excess of one and one-half million dollars. All of the present educational facilities represent the dreams, visions, and inspirations of the people of this district. The position of a trustee is one of public trust and responsibility. As the public school is the bulwark of American progress, the trustees have constantly striven to make the school an efficient instrument of social progress. Many have served as members of the Board of Trustees of the Lemoore Union High School District. They have devoted much time to the study of our school and its needs. We are deeply gratified for their interest in the welfare of youth, and we wish to express our appreciation to them for their untiring efforts to make the Lemoore High School an outstanding school. W H REILLY District Superintendent '1 ' fifty years uf prnqress Fifty years ago the first class graduated from the Lemoore Union High School. There were three members of the graduating class, Maggie Hays, Edward Blank and Arthur Blank. Since 1904, a total of 1989 students have graduated from this school. These graduates are now located throughout the United States and foreign lands. They form links in the chain of educational progress. The people of this District can be justly proud of their accomplishments. I During the past fifty years this country has witnessed the develop- ment of the horseless carriage, the flying machine, radio, television, atomic and hydrogen power and mass production. In these fifty years we have experienced the greatest technological advances ever made by man. Scientists tell us that we may expect even greater advances in the next fifty years. Public education has kept pace with these changing conditions, and it accepts the many challenges of the future. The foresight and courage of those who established the Lemoore Union High School in 1901, an institution which was destined to grow and render service to the youth of this district, was commendable. May the graduates of 1954 experience success. The people who have made your education possible will then be rewarded with the satisfaction that comes to those who have supported good schools and wholesome community life. v1-------f,-....,...,,,,,,- -............,....- graduating classes nf the -'- -MM lamnnra hiqll schunl Characteristics of our country have been growth, development, and improvement. Es- pecially are these significant in California, particularly in the urban areas. The rural areas, however, have also been affected, and Lemoore has received its share of change. In the short span of fifty years the gradu- ating classes of the Lemoore High School have not only increased in size from three to a peak class of ninety-three, but have experi- enced an expanding curriculum and improved services, From T904 to i909 the graduating classes have averaged about five young men and women. They graduated to become citizens LEQNARD R, WARD, principal in our communities. ln the next decade the graduating classes averaged about eleven young men and women, in the 20's about twenty-six, in the 30's about sixty, in the 40's about sixty-five and in the 50's about eighty-six. By i956 or '57 the graduating class should number one hundred or more. These young people are now in our schools. Generally it is and has been the graduate who will do most to influence changes for the advancement of com- munities, state and country. lt is the graduate who will render the greatest service to others. This is true today, al- though almost every pupil who enters a high school may graduate because of the variety of subjects and the services given to each. When this is considered, what a marvelous opportunity for all young people to receive the skills, culture, and wholesome attitudes necessary for good citizenship! We, the Class of 1954, can look back on our happy, well-spent four years at Lemoore High with a feeling of satisfaction as a result of accomp- lishment. As freshmen, the 134 of us soon began to take our places in school activities under the guidance of Miss Furlong and Mr. Weils. As sopho- mores, Mr. Hardin ioined Miss Furlong in her final year as our adviser, and with their help we tried to justify the increasing trust being placed in us. We chose our class rings during this year, and we looked forward to our first year as upper classmen. With Miss Atwood as our adviser in our iunior year, we proved ourselves both capable and industrious in our activities. Our play, Father of the Bride, was presented to a packed house. ln Merch, the annual Junior-Senior prom, with the theme Japanese Tea Garden was a successful and outstanding dance. After a long controversy, we selected mint greeri as the color of our Senior sweaters. As honor escorts for the graduating seniors, we completed our junior year. Now, os seniors, we have combined both work and play in the pro- duction of Seventeenth Summer and in the inauguration of Career Day at Lemoore High. ln the spring came our Sneak Day and the Senior banquet, both well attended and enioyed. As this year closes with the baccalaureate and commencement exercises, our high school days willibe completed. We, the Class of 1954, will go on our separate ways, always remembering our years together at Lemoore High School. if MARSHALL HARDIN Adviser No Picture WILLIE BURTON MARILYN DIVINE Lett first semester MARCIA DUTY Secretary Student Body Director Junior Play F.F.A. That we were active in Student Body affairs is evidenced by the fact that we held four of the nine student body offices. Juniors, too, received recognition for outstanding participation in sports. The Christmas play, Song of Glory, in- :luded thirteen capable iuniors in its cost of sixteen. Many other members of the class made a contribution with the carol- ers and in the construction and scenery crews. The iunior play, Golden River, selected by u committee of class members, was suc- cessfully presented in March. We received our junior rings, and with the aid of a sweater committee chose our senior sweaters. Moonlight and Roses proved to be a beautiful theme for the iunior-senior prom, which was one of the most enioyoble dances of the year. With the freshman initiation in early September, we officially became part of the Lemoore High School Student Body, With 175 members, we were by far the largest class, and it soon became evident we were outstanding in other respects than in size. We did well in entertaining the upper classmen at our initiation, after which the sophomores recip- rocated with the freshman reception, our first social activity, which was well attended, Our class composed the major part of the band this year, which was also led by a freshman drum maior. . At the Christmas program, we proved also that we hmt many talented classmates, as freshmen were predominate in the rag doll dance. Our class gained even more recognition when Shirlene Vrlli and Kenneth Nichols were awarded free annuals for reaching the twenty-five and the fifty per cent sales goals first in our unprecedented support of the l954 yearbook. Some major changes in the clean-up campaign were made by a committee under the chairmanship of the vice president, which added to the effectiveness of the keep-the-campus-clean program. The council investigated several types of basketball scoreboards, and finally purchased an lnstant View Naden Scoreboard, which was turned over to the district. Other purchases included a new popcorn machine, which will be operated by the clubs and classes as a means of adding to their organization funds. BOB LOWE, student body president The secretary contacted each of the schools in our athletic league with a questionnaire as a partial survey leading to the adoption of the standardization of athletic awards recommended by the Cal- ifornia Association of Student Councils. The Bo s' Federation treated us to two movies, The Big Layout pra- Y duced by Dragnet, and Arsenic and Old Laceii, the annual theater party. ln November, Carolyn Barnes, Darlene Perry and Nancy Gaw, elected representatives, accompanied Nancy Buckley and Miss Meyer to the re- gional Girls' League Convention at Dinuba, The impressive candlelight installation ceremony closed a successful and enjoyable year for the Girls' League as it has done for many years. The Girls' League can review with satisfaction its growth in almost thirtyffive years, for it was first organized in October 1920 to promote a spirit of helpfulness, courtesy, and loyalty. Three years later a point system was adopted to insure character and scholastic development among the girls. ... tam '- i NX x C17'kL4,r,,f, Mfwfi',Z: lf, PM ' , 7 9 f2' cfltsiag-+A-' C 2244. fi 2 Nancy Buckley, president. It finds its way to Korea, to Japan, and to alumni members in service camps throughout the nation, and this year it is being sent to Germany. The TIGERS VOICE is now eighteen years old, having been first published in T936 by a staff receiving training in journalism under Miss Ruth Lee. The name NUNTIUS, Latin for messenger, reflects in itself the emphasis on classical edu- cation, which was predominant in high schools at that time. The early NUNTIUS contained few pictures, the greater part of the book being devoted to poetry written by the stu- dents ond stories of student life, As years passed, the magazine developed into o book, and the written matter slowly disappeared as it was gradu- ally reploced by an increasing number of pictures which depicted more accurately and graphically the activities of the students. From the simple record of school personnel and activities, the NUNTIUS has increased in size, has changed in content, and has improved in quality. We, the staff of the T954 NUNTIUS, have attempted to portray the changing student life of this school contrasting the comparatively few activties of students fifty years ago with the numerous extra-curricular opportunities offered to us. This year we would like to extend our thanks to Dailey's Studio of Delano for their excellent photography and es- pecially for their sports coverage, to Mr. Mary Forslind of the Thomas Lithograph Company for his assistance and advice in the printing of our book, and to Mr. John Thomas of the S.K. Smith Company lor his co-operation in the selection of our cover. ' T 'fs f ,si fs s 1 R I r . The orchestra has increased in enrollment until this year there are thirty-six members. Because of the loss of senior members and the increase of in- experienced students, considerable practice was necessary prior to the initial performance for the Senior play and the second ap- pearance in March for the Junior play. Participation in the spring music festival, given tor the public, was an ambitious activity of the year. A program of music for the elementary school and for entertainment on eighth grade day gave lurther opportunity for performance. Last spring the Kings County Junior Red Cross requested the a cappella choir to make recordings to send to for- eign countries in order to help promote good will among the nations of the world. Since the selection of recordings was made from many throughout the nation, the Lemoore a cappella choir is iustly proud of its accomplishment. Again we cooperated with the Junior Red Cross this year when we brought Christmas cheer to the patients of the Kings County Hospital with one half hour of caroling, The choir contributed to many programs throughout the year including the Christmas play, the Public Schools Week program, and programs of various local organizations, Num- bers were also presented for the Student Body, for the exchange program with Coalinga, and for baccalaureate and graduation, the final programs for the a cappella choir this year. ff' 72.4 lining fi in .0 -r Y v tx . e, Q' , ' g as 'Q Q R - -E, 1' J I KB -F' lk ,cs .T 4- 4. ,.
