Likewise both succeed through carefully planned and skilfully performed activities, lioth require adequate stock and equipment, and lmoth require patronage and support. The circus is an old institution. older than the modern show or the modern zoo. llefore the turn of the century, the circus crossed the country for a day's show in country towns as well as cities. A Ringling llrothers. or a Barnum and llailey or Sells lfloto circus pro- vided a holiday for town and countryside. .-Xdult and youngster alike looked forward to the dateg the parade in the niorning and the perforinance in the big top in the afternoon. llere, for the first time. nianv saw ele- phants. camels, lions and tigers in cages, zebras and other aninials. and strange birds, as wcll as trained does. and trained ponies. :Xnd of course there were clowns. and a calliope and tents of inonstrosities with the noisy criers outside.
