o QDnQD A A¥ In Appreciation As we look back three hundred years to the beginnings of secondary education, we are impressed by all that the high school has meant to each period of our develop- ment. We realize that the Lemoore Union High School, having celebrated on March 23 its tenth anniversary as a modern, well- equipped high school, is a monument to progressive secondary education. In sincere appreciation of public high schools and of the Lemoore Union High School, the Class of 1935 dedicates this hook. m

-• Sara Hawkins Progress In High School Education From the modest, one-room, wooden structure of the early Latin grammar school of Boston in 1635, we have emerged, developed, and expanded into the many attractive modern high school plants of 1935. During these three hundred years, this expansion has been the result of the changing ideas of the purpose of a high school education. To the Puritans of New England, education was for the rich. This education, secured through the payments of tuitions, was at first only for boys. For many years high school education was obtainable by the upper classes, and the public failed to realize that this secondary education was necessary for both the boys and the girls of all the people for their own good and for better citizenship. However, advanced learning still remained a matter to be determined by money and the personal satisfaction on the part of the student until financial barriers were removed. With the removal of these obstacles, education became free for all and compulsory because of the growing realization that for the presenit a high school education Is not only an asset but a necessity for each individual in order to equip himself to live to the best advantage and to ke ep pace with the modern world. The purpose of education today is to prepare all for social living. With the present economic and social changes, there is a recognized need for a change in educational requirements in order that we may adjust ourselves better to the in- creasing leisure time of today which has replaced the days of long working hours of past years. Our high schools will continue to offer a program increasing in the number of courses wliich will better equip future students to use their leisure time profitably. As each of us takes a different path, on leaving our alma mater, we realize that, because of our studies and our experiences in Leraoore High School, we should be better equipped to assume the social, economic, aad political responsibilities that await us.
