4 tX LICI I NUNTIUS TWENTY- SIXTH VOLUME PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF THE LEMOORE UNION HIGH SCHOOL JUNE 1935 o QDnQD A A¥ In Appreciation As we look back three hundred years to the beginnings of secondary education, we are impressed by all that the high school has meant to each period of our develop- ment. We realize that the Lemoore Union High School, having celebrated on March 23 its tenth anniversary as a modern, well- equipped high school, is a monument to progressive secondary education. In sincere appreciation of public high schools and of the Lemoore Union High School, the Class of 1935 dedicates this hook. m Contents INTRODUCTION— Frontispiece Title Page Dedication Foreword Nuntius Staff Principal ' s Message Faculty ORDER OF BOOKS— Classes Organizations Activities Sports Varieties [5] -• Sara Hawkins Progress In High School Education From the modest, one-room, wooden structure of the early Latin grammar school of Boston in 1635, we have emerged, developed, and expanded into the many attractive modern high school plants of 1935. During these three hundred years, this expansion has been the result of the changing ideas of the purpose of a high school education. To the Puritans of New England, education was for the rich. This education, secured through the payments of tuitions, was at first only for boys. For many years high school education was obtainable by the upper classes, and the public failed to realize that this secondary education was necessary for both the boys and the girls of all the people for their own good and for better citizenship. However, advanced learning still remained a matter to be determined by money and the personal satisfaction on the part of the student until financial barriers were removed. With the removal of these obstacles, education became free for all and compulsory because of the growing realization that for the presenit a high school education Is not only an asset but a necessity for each individual in order to equip himself to live to the best advantage and to ke ep pace with the modern world. The purpose of education today is to prepare all for social living. With the present economic and social changes, there is a recognized need for a change in educational requirements in order that we may adjust ourselves better to the in- creasing leisure time of today which has replaced the days of long working hours of past years. Our high schools will continue to offer a program increasing in the number of courses wliich will better equip future students to use their leisure time profitably. As each of us takes a different path, on leaving our alma mater, we realize that, because of our studies and our experiences in Leraoore High School, we should be better equipped to assume the social, economic, aad political responsibilities that await us. F. Graham Growth This edition recognizes growth and progress. Thirty-four years ago the Lemoore High School in modesty was started with one teacher who taught six subjects to less than thirty pupils housed in a small rented room. Today the school employs twenty teachers, has an enrollment of three hundred seventy pupils and offers instruction in sixty different subjects. The building and equipment which cost over one-third of a million dollars are located an a twenty-four acre site. Seven busses transport pupils to and from school. This year sixty-four pupils will graduate, one more in number than the total number which graduated during the first thirteen years of the school ' s operation. Tiuly this physical growth is significant. Yet, even as the soul or spirit and not the physical is the real man so of more importance than the buildings and wealth of the Lemoore High School are the traditions, the loyalties, the visions, and the aspirations of its pupils and patrons which gave origin to these buildings. Each succeeding class as it came in turn has added its spirit and c-ini- viclioMs to make that intangible yet telling force known as the institution. Class of lit:55! Congratulations upon the unique contribution which you have made. To me it has been most interesting to study that contribution in the making. 1 would call it cosmopolitan. As you go out from your alma mater, may you live the theme of this book and ever realize that as the soul expands so grows man ' s happiness and his worth to his fellowmen. Edwin Downing (Abner Simpson), Ruth Graham (Mrs. Perkins), Glenn Kleinhammer (Jeremiah Cobb), Evelyn Kurtz (Rebecca Rowena Randall), Bruce Russell (Adam Ladd), Agnes Warmerdam (Miranda Sawyer), Sally Robertson (Jane Sawyer), Oveita Kratzer (Clara Belle Simpson), Miss Lee (Director), Eleanor Smith (Alice Robinson), Vernona Becker (Minnie Smellie.) The seniors of 1935 chose as their class play the popular story of Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, in which many of the quaint pastimes of old Maine delighted the audience. The mother of Rebecca Rowena Randall of Sunnybrook Farm is burdened with a large family and a mortgage. She is much relieved when her affluent relatives, aunts Miranda and Jane, offer to take Rebecca off her hands to train and educate her. Rebecca is a lovable child, although quite a bit different from her aunt Miranda ' s rigid standards. At first she runs away from the tyranny of her aunt, but returns at the subtle suggestion of Jerry Cobb, the dear old stage driver. There is La.tin blood in Rebecca, and she will have her outbursts. As time goes on, the child wins her way slowly into the heart of Miranda, just as she does with all who come in con- tact with her. There is also the suggestion of a future love affair cleverly woven in the plot. Junior Play The juniors presented Growing Pains on February 8 under the direction of Miss Lee. , . . , x. This story gives both a new and old -fashioned picture of unsophisticated youth as it flutters uncertainly on the wings of sixteen. €,eorge and Terry Mclntyre are the problem children in the play. Their father is a stolid university profess.or who is all in favor of laying down the law. Their mother is a soft-hearted woman who lets them have their fling. George gets a fliver. Terry gets a permanent wave, high-heeled slippers, and a red evening dress. The bewildered parents give them a party which is well attended, and the parents ;end ' eavor to eliminate from the picture ' the present-day dissipations. Prudence, one of the guests, however, is an up-to-the-minute siren. Her vampish ministrations upheave the calm of the party. Terry ' s boy friend ignores her and her new frocks completely to woo Pl-udience. George falls for Prudence, too, and every other young Romeo on the premises vies for the favor of the coquettish maid. , ,, ti vt=„„ . There happens to be a shortage of ice cream, an,d George dashes to the rtescue in his car onlv to pass a red light, and after an argument with the traffic cop. is placed in jail; ' and the very next morning he is told by Prudence that he is entirely too young. Many things happened to all of them, but the end was prtmising and happy. The cast included Mrs. Mclntyre (Fay Nichols), Professor Mclntyre (Gilbert Bvron) George (George Jones), Terry (Inez Pereira), Sophie (Anna Lee Logan), M -s Patterson (Ruby Mertz). Elsie Patterson (Helen Terra), traftic ofticer fwestrnFolTett), Dutch (Lloyd Roe), Brian (Alvin May) Omar ' ' vms Byron) Hal (Tack Harrah) Pete (Ben Finney). Prudence Darling (Virginia Harder), Patty fslalyn Badasd), jLe (Lucille Thomsen), Miriam (Jewell Rose). Vivian (Ruth Mack).
