I slowly extracted my arms and legs from the bed covers, donned my 1 lounging robe, and went to the medicine cab- inet for an aspirin. After I had swallowed two of the pills. with the customary choking, cough- ing, and bad faces. I slipped into the kitchen to make a raid on the refrigerator. I was sitting at the kitchen table enjoying a snack fcaviar and navy beansi when I first glanced at the calendar. My arms dropped to my sides in a gesture! of amazement. I was spellbound! It was several minutes before I collected my wits enough to look once more at the calendar. No, it hadn't changedg it still showed the date as March 25, ISU-124. I couldnk understand it. My emotions were a mixture of amazement, uneasiness, and curiosity. W After a few more minutes of trying fruit- lessly to understand the situation, I, resolved to leave in the morning to find out what was happening. I dressed and left the house at 7:30, from where I went directly to the office ot' the daily paper. As an answer to my questions of what the day was and what had been happening, they consented to show me every back issue of the paper, from March, 1939, to March, 150420. I thanked them, and after reviewing the high spots of the news, so as not to appear the silly Rip Van VVinkle which I undoubtedly was, I went out into the streets once more. I wandered around for an hour, noting the changes in the buildings, automobiles, styles of dress, etc. After decid- ing to return home and walking two blocks in that direction, I met a tall, sun-tanned gentleman who looked at me for several minutes, then walked directly up to me and stopped. VVhy hello, there, he said. calling me by name, I haven't seen you since you graduated from Monroe. VVhy, 'era ah, how do you do, I managed to exclaim. Ah, you do not remember nie. I used to teach you historyg Mr. Catch, remember? Oh, yes, I'm glad to meet you again, Mr. Catch. The next twenty minutes were spent in reminiscing the time when we were at Monroe. I say, I'm having a party tonight, said Mr. Gatch presently, there-'ll be a lot of people there that you know. Won't you come? VVhy yes, I'd he delighted. I'l1 be looking for you then. The address is: Gatch Gardens, just south of Slugs on the Railroad. I arrived early that night, and after being shown around the estate, I went into the drawing room to watch the guests arrive. The first couple to arrive, excluding those I didn't know, was Mr. Dan lloosa and Miss Doris Meyer. Miss Meyer is a debutante of several seasons ago. The next two guest were Lloyd Thompson and Gordon Lindsay. I was informed by Mr. Gatch that Mr. Thompson was business manager of the Cincinnati Reds and that Mr. Lindsay was a parachute tester at Dayton. Soon afterwards the butler announced the arrival of the former Miss Ruth Lane, who furnished the social high- light of last Week when she married the Count of New Yorkshire, Van Pickeledegg. Mr. VVilliam Raines and Miss Martha Doebler were accompanied by .lon Cottle who wore a bright red page boy suit and continually disturbed the party by crying' at the top of his voice, Call for Philip Morris. Much excitement was caused by the entrance of those three well-known movie stars, Mary Dietz, Bernice Lykins, and Thelma WVells. About six feet behind these glamour girls came the play boys of the past, Stanley Sorrell, Mark Neu. and Francis Mulligan. I stepped over into the corner to escape the excitement, but had to move quickly to preserve my well-thought-of life. Ray Lovely, a prominent mathemetician, and Park Ricefphilosoplier, were on the verge of blows because of an argu- ment about the possibility of a fifth dimension. 4The fourth one was discovered four years agoi. Just as the party was getting good, the butler threw Charles liosselot, widely-known politician, out of the kitchen door because he was trying to campaign from the dining room table. Speaking of the butler-after concentrating for several minutes, I recognized him as Xvarren Miller with an English accent. A group of girls from the finishing school not far away were the next guests to arrive, They were very timid: spent the entire evening doing the shag. The group included lflylatta Maloney, Rita Miller, Onia Lee Patton, Betty Persch. Jeanette Selby, and their chaperone, Annabelle Landis. A very nervous fellow sat over to the side taking notes on the doings of the evening. After hunting Mr. Gatch, who was playing ping pong with Lawrence Schultheiss, I learned it was Dan Abele, gi reporter for the daily paper, PAGE THIRTY-Two SENIIIR PBIIPIIECY Ruth Crane sat at a table by herself, staring off into space. This puzzled me at first. I always thought that she was popular enough to have a flock of escorts. Then the reason for the solitude came to me. She was looking at the lead- er of the orchestra, Dick Meyer. And who do you think was playing in the orchestra? The rhythm twins, Jane and Jean Augspurger! Four very big business men were introduced to me, and it turned out that I knew all four of them. They- were Donald Armstrong, James Barnes, Bill Castle, and Alvin Chapman. They were partners in the largest scrap iron business in New York. ' Paul Crane dropped around to tell me about his new job. He was a tester for the Ford Corporation. Now he gets paid for tearing up cars. Helen Armbruster, Mildred Aylstock, and Ruth Beal, all officers of the humane society, were present to make sure that the cook was careful when he cut the steak, so as not to hurt the cow, or something like that. Geneva Tuggle, believe it or not, was the maid. And what is even perhaps more startling, is the tact that the kitchen force lmostly cooksl was composed of Lauretta Slifer, Betty Trettel, and Esther Kennel. It seem that Mr. Gatch must have had a warm spot in his heart for the alumnae of Monroe high school. An explosion in the garage almost caused a panic until it was investigated and was found that Bob and Tom Coyle, scientists, were experimenting on a new non-explosive gasoline. A doctor was called tDan Cleary but no injuries were found. Dorothy Coffey came into the guest room leading enough dogs to make believe that she owned a kennel. However, we found out that her husband was the municipal catcher. After IhiDgS had Settled GOWH H bil, the Daffy WHS Once more broken up when somebody yelled, Heil Hitler! We excused him, though when we found out that it was Bill Hummel. It seems that he fell out of a truck while traveling eilht year ago, and ever since he has thought he was a. dictator. Maybe he has a chanceg it appears that all you have to do to become a dictator is gg crazy. Bob Heller, a heavily bearded photographer, was on the front porch taking the pictures of couples for twenty-five cents. Three couples were lined up. This will kill you. They were: Eugene Doughman and Wanda Karshner, Betty Long and Hershal Lovely, and Ishmael Fletcher with Carolyn Laker. Winifred Greene spent the entire evening in the closet practicing for her part in the coming play, 'Displaced by the Moving Air. They laughed when Edith Sorrell sat down to play the piano, she thought that there was a piano bench. About the middle of the evening, Chester Griflin and Leonard Kelly got into a fight because both wanted to hold Irene Gullette's hand. The dispute was settled when Chet left with Norma Johnston. Charles Hausman walked in the door reading a book of essays by Emerson, and tripped over Wilbur Hendrickson who was bent over looking for a saucer which he had dropped into his hoe. The next disturbance of the evening was caused by three women wrestlers who were arguing as to who in- vented the double head lock. Ruth Senften finally won out by flooring Christine Shoup and Emma Sanderson. After half an hour of beating upon a table with his fist, Mr. Gatch silenced the orderly t?J mob and announced that we would have some special music by the Killer-Diller quartet. Strange as it may seem, the four jitterbugs were Gordon Hale, James Henderson, Tom Lubberger, and Melvin Miller. The party slowed down a bit toward the end. Somebody said that Bernice Schooley had taken poison because she had lost Richard Mull. Things picked up again when we found that the poison she had taken was only corn syrup. Five members of the Boston Blood Hounds, a semi-professional baseball team dropped in when they heard there would be free eats. The boys really looked vicious as they tore into the deviled ham sandwiches. They were Harold Moore, Lawrence McClung, George McGill, Harold Nock, and Hobart Parker. The mascot came toog he was Earl Phllhower. A Mr. Gatch aged considerably in the next five minutes. It seems that a girls' football team was out in the kitchen playing pass with the fowls. The only four that I knew were Lucy Mulford, Teddy McCracken, Ruth Ollgee, and Viola. Hale. I would have been ashamed of them, but I knew that it was all the other girls' faults. Lucymae Trimble, Evelyn Williams, Geneva Tibbs and Betty Stover came to the party alone. They, were very lonesome so they called the Eureka Escort Bureau. and had four handsome escorts sent out. They were Harold Thomas, Herschel Van Cleave, Wilburn Wells, and Elmer Willoughby. Everybody was happy. For the last entertainment of the evening, Carl Tibbs spoke that beloved classic, Jack Horner. After the party had broken up, and I do mean broken up, I returned home and Went to bed to get some well-dv served sleep. Next morning, I awoke early and went into the kitchen. For the second time in three days I almost fainted. The calendar read May 22, 1939. I looked on the table and there were the dirty dishes on which I had eaten. I looked at my suit, and there was the flower that I had put in my button hole especially for the party. There was no doubt in my mind about the past events being true. I spent the day sitting around the house reviewing the happenings of the last day. Oliver weighs over 200 pounds and proved to be the anchor man of the Hornet line. He is noted for his steady brand of ball. LLOYD THOMPSON Thompson, another senior, was the boy to watch when it came to punt- ing. He always kept the opponents on their toes waiting to chase a long punt. When he was not kicking. he played tackle. FO0TBALL KENNETH HOWARD Kenny Howard showed a lot of spirit and fight as a substitute cen- ter this year and is figured to take over regular center next year. A lot can be expected of this boy next SPZISOH. BILL RAINES Raines, a graduating linesman, played at the end position this year and handed in a fine piece of work. He always managed to get down the field on the kick-off and hit the ball carrier. He was another one of those boys who enjoyed going through and getting his man. Raines has played football for three years. TOM DUFF One of the few players to make the first squad in his sophomore year is Tom Duff. He delighted the fans at Franklin by consistently slipping through a highly-praised Franklin line for eight and ten-yard gains. His outstanding play was an intercepted pass and a 55-yard touchdown run. S P 0 R T S BASKETBALL FAIRFIELD This game started as though it would really be close. At the half the score was leveled 6-6. In the second half the Hornets pulled away and went on to a 23-15 win. Mc- Clung paced the Monroe scorers with 7 points. WEST ELKTON Monroe opened its home season with an impressive win over the West Elkton quintet. Raines and Thompson each rang the bell for 12 points. Roosa and Gibbs follow- ed with 8 each. REILY Using 10 men, 8 of whom figured in the scoring, Monroe trounced the Reily combine 40-28. Monroe was never in danger. Captain Roosa led his team in the scoring column with a total of 14 points. FRANKLIN Dropping their first game of the season was the fate of the Hornets when they tangled with the Frank- lin Tigers. Franklin led at the half 13-12. The final score, 25-20. SEVEN MILE In the last league game of the '38-'39 season the Hornets dropped the Seven Mile quintet by the score of 33-12. The two high scorers were both second string players. Wells led with 8, and Gibbs followed with 7. HAMILTON CATHOLIC In the last game on the schedule, the Hornets lost to a determined Hamilton Catholic crew. Thompson paced the Hornets with 8 points. WAYNE In a comparatively unexciting game on the Monroe court, the Hor- nets subdued the Wayne five, 37-21. Monroe took the first lead, and were ahead at the half 19-7. Kurtz and Thompson chalked up 23 points. ROSS After overcoming an early 4-0 lead, the Hornets went ahead at the quarter 6-4 and were not challenged again, coasting to an easy 26-19 win. Ross showed a god offense and would have made an interesting game were it not for their poor de- fense. MILFORD Continuing their display of fine basketball, the Hornets put the sting on Milford for a 31-19 win. This was one of the easiest games of the season with the Hornets not needing to use their full strength. FRANKLIN Avenging an earlier defeat at the hands of the Franklin five, Monroe defeated the Red and Black 25-19. The Hornets were ahead at the half 16-10. Roosa and McClung each tal- lied 7 points while Stonecash marked up 6 for the losers. LEBANON In spite of being the under-dogs, the Hornets took an early lead in the Lebanon game and were never seriously challenged until the last quarter. Monroe led at the half 20-6. Fine defensive play staved off a last minute rally by Lebanon. STEWART Several bad breaks came close to losing the Stewart game for Monroe. At the half the score was 11-4 with Monroe ahead. However, early in the second half, Thompson and McClung were put out and the Hornets were only able to pull out a 24-18 win. HANOVER Defeat. number one for Monroe in county competition was the result of the Hanover game played at Hanover. Monroe had the advantage 15-11 at the half but by sinking a donated shot in the final seconds of the last quarter, Hanover ac- qcomplished a 22-21 win. TRENTON In a very lop-sided game played at the Trenton gym, the Hornets de- feated the Trenton quintet, 47-17. Several reserves played in this game, with Paul Moore starring. He made 8 points in half of the last quarter. WEST CHESTER All signs indicated a very inter- esting game when the time came for the Monroe and West Chester teams to meet. Monroe had but one defeat. West Chester none. After a hard-fought game by both sides, Monroe pulled out a 24-13 victory. TOURNAMENTS In the county tournament, Monroe drew a bye and did not have to play in the initial rounds. Their first opponent was Stewart. Monroe won 23-18. The Hornets chalked up a 29-13 win at the expense of Han- over in the second game and went on to win the tournament at the ex- pense of Morgan, the score being 24-18. Lockland was the first team to confront Monroe in the District tournament. Monroe, although the underdog, won 25-20. Next they beat Wyoming 25-23, and then Morgan 26-23. In the last and champion hip game, the Hornets were victorious 44-32. On to Columbus and the state fi- nals. The first Hornet opponent was Maumee. The Hornets were the winners, 31-27. In the second game they played the favored Rittman team. Another victory, this time 31-25. And then that North Canton game in the semi-finals. Monroe 14, North Canton 29. Enough said. 'l,i:.'vIC'.5i-'nv l PAGE SIXTY-Savi x . . S P 0 R T S ASKETBALL DAN ROOSA If at any time you were a spectator at a Mo11roe game during last year, you can't help remembering the antics of the teamfs captain, Dan Roosa. Dan was a steady player and never failed to give his all to try to edge out a win. His regular position was that of for- ward, and his specialty was short one-hand shots. He made a very excellent showing in the state tournament. LLOYD THOMPSON Lanky Lloyd Thompson was the fiist-string center for the Hornets. He attained such height in jumping center that our safety teacher suggested that he wear a parachute for safety. He was exceptionally good on the rebound and delighted in faking one type shot only to take another before his opponents realized the difference. BILL KURTZ Steady followers of the team will never forget the fine brand of ball shown by C'owboy in the district tournament. Bill was dead-eye on his hook shots and also took a nice bunny. He played fine defensive ball, and easily came up to the coa.ch's expectations. In spite of his height, Bill was a very good rebounder. In the coun- ty tournament he repeatedly came off the bankboard with the ball while his taller opponents stood by open- mouthed. BUD McCLUNG A senior this year, Bud played his last basketball for Monroe during the '38-'39 season. He played at the guard position and paced the entire squad on his long shots. In the district Hllfl state tournaments, his shots from the ten-second line thrilled the crowd and filled the hearts of his opponents with envy. BILL RAINES In the early part of the season, Bill played as though his very life depended on the out-come of the game. In the middle of the season, Bill had to drop out of actual playing because of illness and he had difficulty in regaining his old form. He played guard, and was noted throughout the county for his fast breaks and his under-the-basket shots. WILBURN WELLS Willie was a newcomer to the first squad this year. He played a. great deal in the middle of the season in place of Bill Raines. Wilburn is absolutely tops on long shots. In several of the games he repeatedly sank long shots to the dismay of the crowd. CHA RLES TUCKER Charlie is but a sophomore this year and is one rea- son why the coach smiles when he speaks of next sea- son. Oharlie came from Map-le Park and has made a per- manent place for himself in the memory of the fans who attended any of the tournaments which the Hornets en- gaged in this year. PAUL MOORE Paul Moore is another sophomore. He was a con- sistent high scorer for the reserves in the early part of the season before he was promoted to the first ten.. Peek wat excelled on side court shots. PAUL GIBBS Ill spite of his size, which is a good bit shorter than most of the first ten, Paul proved himself an able basket- ball player. No other player on the squad could equal his deceptive ball handling. He was very good on the de- fense and excelled on set shots in offensive play. RAY LONELY Ray, a senior this year, played at the center posi- tion. He shined on defensive play and made a good showing in the county tournament at Hamilton. He threw a quick, flat pass, which was a great aid to the passing attack of the Hornets. ' l'lml-: SIXTY-l'llllll'l' SPORTS... In pifavtive the outfield looked good 011 fly balls, although the inlivhl loolcetl slightly rough on hard-hit grountlers. Other players on the squad who have been showing some promise of developing into star players are Charlie Tucker, Uharles Pate. Don Hayes, and Carl Lubberger. Charlie Tucker, a southpaw. has been playing in the center field position in practice. and shows signs of hold- ing down that position regularly in the future. Uharles Pate. is number one substitute for the first base position. Ile has shown marked ability in picking' up low throws, but is slightly weak with the stick. lion Hayes. another southpaw, is working on the mound. Ile will develop into a starting pitcher ii' he works on his control. Farl liuh- bergcr. a freshman ontlieliler, handles himself like an experienced outfielder. The outstanding department on the llornets, squad is the pitching statf. Last year's star twirler leads the parade, withl three newcomers rounding out the stall. Wells has shown a nice curve ?lI1Ll lair control. Hale also has a nice curve with plenty of steam. but poor con- trol. Gibbs has control coupled with a 1lll'li curve and drop, but needs to develop more speed. The infield is almost satisfactory. True, they are a little backward on hard-hit grounders, but they make up for it with some nice stops and also by hitting in the clutches. The condition of the playing field in the first practices may have had something to do with the in- iielders missing easy hoppers. Starting with the opening day of the baseball sea- son, spring rains drenched the diamond, making it slick and diflicult to break fast. Then. when the sun did come out, it baked the infield and made it too hard and rough. After dragging it a few times. however. it is coming around into shape nicely. Baseball is not indulgjcd in by as many boys as is football. because each player must furnish his own equip- ment, with the exception ot' balls. The school furnishes uniforms, but gloves. shoes. and sliding pads must be secured by the boys themselves. Early in the season. only about 14 boys reported for practice. Then, as the weather improved, more and more boys came ont, until at present, nearly 25 boys are re- porting each night. Baseball practice is held after school, and is, therefore an, extra-curricular activity. PAGE SEVENTY-THREE . . . S P 0 R T S qua'- TOM DUFF-Tom, who is known to many Monroe fans for his par- ticipation in football, works at the catching position. He has a sharp eye and a deadly peg to any of the bases. He is a smart player and is quick to get on to a batters weak- ness. DICK FRYE-Second base was the position which Dick originally went out for, but at the advice of the coach, he switched to right field. He is a good man at bat and is sudden death to any batter hitting a fly ball within range of his eye- sight. PAUL GIBBS-Paul is a new- comer to the squad. He is out for pitcher, and is making an impres- sive showing. He has a fa.st-break- ing curve and an out-drop that is very deceptive. His pitching is also marked by very good control. GORDON HALE-Gordon is a veteran of Monroe high school base- ball. He is one of the coach's start- ing pitchers, and is ably chosen, for he is known for his fine curve and speed. In practice he has shown more steam than he did in previous years. SCHOOLAR HALL-Because of his speed and good judgment on fly balls, Schoolar is patroling the cen- ter orchard for the blue and gold clan. Schoolar hits in the three hundreds and because of an uncan- ny knack of getting on base, he bats in the lead-off slot. DON HAYES-Don is the only southpaw pitcher on the staffthis year. This short sophomore port- sider is displaying a fine pitching style and with a year's seasoning, should develop into a starter by next year. JIM HENDERSON-Working in the left orchard is Jim Henderson who is considered one of the best outer gardeners on the Hornet's squad. He has a very high fielding average and is quite capable with the Willow. GORDON LINDSAY-First string catcher for the '39 season is Vulch Lindsay. Gordon has an excellent throwing arm and is quite capable of calling for the right pitch. He is one of the outstanding hitters of last year and is expected to repeat this season. HERSHAL LOVELY--In spite of his height, which is very small in comparison to Lindsay or Thomp- son, Hershal cavorts favorably around the shortstop ground. He is a very good hitter and frequently surprises his opponents by poking out long hits. DAN ROOSA-Dan is another member of the pitching staff. He is right handed and has very good control. Fans of the Hornets last season will no doubt remember the fine game he pitched in the district tournament, in spite of the Monroe defeat. PAGE SEVENTY-FIVE . . . S P 0 ll T S LLOYD THOMPSON-The Veter- an head of the pitching staff is lanky Llo y d Thompson. Lloyd pitched nearly all of the games last season and is showing the same con- fident form in this year's practice. The fans expectations for Lloyd are high. CARL TIBBS-Carl is the cause of discouragement of rookies going out for the first base position. Carl is a senior this year and is playing a brand of ball above- the regular high school expectations. He ls a good hitter and a fast runner, which makes a fine combination on any team. CHARLES TUCKER-Charlie is one of the southpaws on the squad and the only one going out for an outfield position., He is trying for the center field berth. He is fast, a reasonably good hitter and a very smart base runner. BEN DAVIS-Although a junior, this is the first season that Ben has bfen out for the baseball nine. He went out for the third spot and is very likely to be the regular hot corner guardian. BUD WADE-Bud plays in the right field position, and does it very ably. He has a good throwing arm and is a fairly good hitter. He judges fly balls very ably. WILBURN WELLS- Willie is another pitcher. He has one of the best curves of any pticher on the team. He has good control and a good pitching knowledge. He is ex- pected to see a good deal of service this year. PAGE SEVRNTY-SIX S P 0 B T S . . . This year he reported for practice early, but before the first meet he twisted his ankle and won't be able to run until the latter part of the season. SCHOOLAR HALL-Schoolar is known far and wide for his out- standing ability as a broad jumper. He has often jumped 19 and 20 feet and expects to go even farther this year. He is very fast, which is, of course, an asset to any broad jump- er. REED BAN KS-Reed is Monroe's outstanding miler. He has run the long distance in practice at an even 5 minutes. He is very long-winded and never fails to have a sprint after keeping up a furious pace for the four laps that make up the mile. LESLIE MURPHY-Leslie started the season as a half-miler but when the coach made the suggestion, he changed to a miler. He has been turning in very good time, and with Reed Banks as a partner, he should bring in some firsts in the future meets. TR CK GORDON LINDSAY- 'Vulch is throwing the discus for the blue and gold this year. He is doing a very remarkable job considering that this is his first year. He should do very well in the regular season. OLIVER KASH- Little Oliver Kash is out there throwing the shot for Monroe and he really does throw it. He is somewhat of a veteran, this being his second year on the track team. FRED INGLE-Fred is only a sophomore this year, but because of his ability to high jump, the coach is looking forward to several more seasons of clearing the bar over 5 feet. Fred also jumps the high hur- dles in the absence of Bill Kurtz. HERSHAL BORDERS-Hershal, although small of stature, is a very capable quarter- and half-mile run- ner. He is a member of last year's county championship mile relay team, and this year he is also run- ning the 880. WILBUR BORDERS--Wilbur is also a member of last year's mile relay team. He runs the half at a very low mark and is always ready for a sprint, no matter how far he has run. This is his second year on the team. PAGE SEVENTY-SEVFIN . . . S P 0 B T S BILL RAINES-Bill is a senior this year, and is going to make his last year of track good if he keeps up the pace that he has set in the last few days. He runs in the 100 yard dash and also in the low hur- dles. He is noted for his fast starts. RAY LOVELY-Ray is out for discus this year and is doing very good at it. He is a veteran football player and shows the same will to win in track that he did on the grid- iron. DOUGLAS CRAYCRAFT-Doug is only a freshman this year and be- cause of the speed he is showing, he will be a valuable asset to the team for quite a few years to come. He runs in the 100, 220 and the mile relay. WARREN MILLER-This is the first year that Warren has been out for track. He is taking up pole vaulting and if he improves at the rate he has in the past few weeks, he will be jumping 10 feet before the season is over. EUGENE DOUGHMAN-Eugene is another of the milers to run for the blue and gold. He also runs in the mile relay. He ran the mile last year, and if he can improve his time a little, he is sure to take some place in the county event. 11111 MA AGER P11111 S12v1cNT1'-NINI-1 . . .
