The Leland chapter of the F.F.A. takes part in speech contests, livestock judging contests, soil judging contests, and parliamentary procedure contest. We send two members to the state con- vention every year. Money making projects sponsored by the F.F.A. this year have been the ham supper, the scrap iron drive, and selling tractor seats and rat poison. We also have a formal initiation each year. Our F.H.A. chapter's over-all goal is to help in- dividuals improve personal, family, and community living. The objective is to discover one's self and one's worth to others. The project is You and Your Values. During the year we sold cookbooks, made tray favors for the Sandwich hospital, entertained our mothers at the Installation of Officers, entertained the F.F.A. boys at a Halloween costume party, held a formal initiation of new members, held a cherry pie contest, sponsored the Sweetheart Ball, enter- tained the Earlville F.l-LA. chapter, took field trip to Honey Bear Farm in Genoa, Wisconsin, sponsored a Spring Style Show, held a progressive dinner, and entertained the graduating eighth grade girls at a party in the spring. We also sent a delegate to F.I-LA. camp in the stunmer. MAKI . .omni RJ Q0 we ' 74 gf rv' -' rsfmwf '1 E in.-11 ij' Q J . to. O2 -' xo? ,p x DNEW How F .H .A. Under the able leadership of the fantastic Robert Bear Strickland and the small but mighty Kenneth Nelson, the Leland Athletic Department completed one of its best seasons in the history of our wonderful school. Yes, indeed, the 1962-1963 sports picture at dear Old Leland High School was overwhelming. They said it couldn't be done, but this did not hinder Leland Varsity wizards. On the con- trary, due to the terrific determination and spirit that this year's Panthers showed, they com- pletely fooled the experts and shocked the sports world by winning both the Little Ten Baseball Championship and the Little Ten Basketball Championship. This was the first time in L.H.S. history that this spectacular feat has been accomplished. Yes, fans, we should be proud of the '62-63 varsity athletes, but let us not become completely blinded in our glory and forget the unbelievable and fantastic obstacles that our athletes, under the guidance of their brilliant coaches, overcame. By obstacles, this sports writer is referring mainly to Serena, who was supposed to be the conference king pin in basketball and baseball during the past season. However, the fighting Panthers didn't let this hinder them, and they went on to completely annihilate Serena to win both championships. So, fans, if you are ever fortunate enough to walk through the humble halls of Leland Com- mtmity High School and your eyes should by chance fall upon the 1962-1963 trophy case with its championship trophies, please stop and give a moment of your time in memory of the valiant varsity athletes and their two coaches who fought so hard to put those trophies there. In undying memory of the '62-63 varsity boys, Cave Dondon P.S. Leland also had a very fine and well-trimmed track team during the 1962-1963 season. 42 X QL Q H-'E 'ns'38 f vwmnyvanxwv ,mummy 1 FINDERS CREEPERS 44 I WAS A TEEN-A GE DRA CULA 45 SOME SHOTS OF OUR TRIP TO WASHINGTON Before Leaving Leland Wax Museum Washington Monument Mount Vernon Marine Memorial 46 The awards banquet is held annually each spring in the Leland High School gymnasium. The main purpose of the banquet is to present awards to the students for the achievements they have made during the school year. Each department within the school presents its individual awards to the students. Also there are various special awards that are usually presented to members of the Senior Class. Before the awards are given out the faculty, students, and their parents are served a wonderful potluck supper. All in all, the awards banquet is one of the outstanding highlights of the L.H.S. academic year. 47 4 A 1 Q. .Jr I f Q E VENIN G King, Bob Leonardg Queen, Sara Baker. First to arrive is Barb Larson. She is prompt and efficient now. It's a permanent habit since she became the exclusive secretary to the President of the United States Loretta is here early too, since she is preparing the banquet for the reunion. She is an expert at mass food production, having to prepare all the food for the Foster Home for Children. Unfortunately, she has a soft heart and she and her husband have adopted forty-six children from the home in addition to their own f0Lu'teen. Donna arrives next carrying twenty cans of milk. She is supplying all the milk for the reunion since she and her husband started feeding their two million cows Bode's Easy-Flow Milk Feed, discovered by Bill Henrikson to make each cow produce 163 gallons of milk a day. Carol Wicks salutes everyone as she comes in. This is a permanent habit she acquired. She is a WAC now, and rumor has it she is trying to compete with her husband. Dave and Tom are congratulating each other as they enter. Each has invented world-shaking discoveries. Tom has found the 104th element while poking around in the ancient ruins of Leland High School. Dave found the cure for the ulcer and also, because of popular demand, an instant ulcer for the businessman. Nancy Heam is also very pleased with herself because she has just managed to get the legislature to pass her bill for making 4-H a subject in high schools through- out the nation. She is now a 4-H leader and music teacher in that booming city of Baker. Doug arrives soon riding his favorite white stallion Flyer. He is world famous since Doug has bred him especially to trot at 250 M.P.l-I. Mary Smith is an author now. She is passing out free autographed copies of her i54.AHfr Al xitln'-J I . f l on a NK Lqlifg-E MILK . H mwmvlnlw I A 52 famous book, HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN A PLAY BY ONLY SAYING FOUR WORDS. In a glitter of gold, Penni Horna arrives. That glitter of gold is her solid gold semi which was given to her by her husband who owns all the trucking lines in the world. Ken and Paul come together swinging mallets. They won the Croquet Champion ship of the World for Partners. Their success depended upon their excellent ability to get along with each other. Their trophy was a gold-plated Croquet ball which they are now fighting over. A terrific noise is heard outside and there is Nancy Davis on a tractor. She was so successful as secretary in the factory where she works that they gave her the highest position possible in the plant, oiling pistons for road machinery. Pete is next to arrive. He is now a prosperous C.P.A. for the Norwegian Com- pany of the world. He is also head of the accounting staff for salaries for profes- sional basketball players. Betty is smiling happily when she enters, carrying her Oscar which she won at the last Academy Awards show. She won it for the Best Costume Designer for the famous motion picture, CLEOPATRA. Good heavens, it sounds like a clarinet. Steve has just arrived with his new in- vention, a clarinet that plays while you suck IN on it. Here comes Donley, who just arrived on his ,rnillion dollar yacht, THE QUEEN MARY. He has made millions of dollars by selling paper to trigonometry students all over the world. Sara Baker, last to arrive, is leading her prize heifer, Lessur. Lessur won Grand Champion at the World Fair for Faithful 4-H'ers. Her secret to success she says, is singing Lessur to sleep every night. 3 Q ' Q7 K If I-ll log 'fi fefs r lf, A in C 53 White House S1'1'lithSOD.i.2.1'l I.l1StitLltE Glgnnfs Capgule Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Capitol Building 54- Changing of the Guard ,ff if 'S' I ADVERTI I -W...
