The vice principals, Mrs. Rudd, Mr. Ridley, and Mr. Mahaffey, have helped us through the year with their friendly smiles, encouraging words, and genuine feeling of concern for the students. They are examples of the adult generation reflecting feeling for the young- understanding them and giving them the needed guidance in these formative, influen- tial years.

Reflecting Values and Ideas SENlORS1970 In February 1965, jerry and Renny Russell, two young brothers, collaborated on a book, On the Loose, which is a photographic essay that glorifies the eloquence of nature's wilderness, the world that has not been spoiled by human contact. There is a passage in the book that reads: You can go through life fudging and evading, indulging and slacking, never really hungry, nor frightened, nor passionatly stirred, your highest moment a mere sentimental orgasm, and your first real Contact with primary and elemental necessities the sweat of your death bed. l hope we've prepared you for more than this during our three years at Leland. We hope that you've been provided with strength, determi- nation, improvisation and tolerance so that you will know the joy of exhaustion, the taste of sweat, and most important the thrill of knowing that now you can rely on yourself to make the kinds of decisions necessary to live, rather than just pass through life.
