There is a passage in the book that reads: You can go through life fudging and evading, indulging and slacking, never really hungry, nor frightened, nor passionatly stirred, your highest moment a mere sentimental orgasm, and your first real Contact with primary and elemental necessities the sweat of your death bed. l hope we've prepared you for more than this during our three years at Leland. We hope that you've been provided with strength, determi- nation, improvisation and tolerance so that you will know the joy of exhaustion, the taste of sweat, and most important the thrill of knowing that now you can rely on yourself to make the kinds of decisions necessary to live, rather than just pass through life. ZW 'X 2 r X The vice principals, Mrs. Rudd, Mr. Ridley, and Mr. Mahaffey, have helped us through the year with their friendly smiles, encouraging words, and genuine feeling of concern for the students. They are examples of the adult generation reflecting feeling for the young- understanding them and giving them the needed guidance in these formative, influen- tial years. E 'D s. I found the students very helpful and friendly. This experience I have had in a school with a very different kind of peoplefrom another part of this vast world could have ended in failure, but thanks to the helping hands of the students I was able to survive. I gained many new friends and fulfilled the very purpose of my being here. The stay proved to be very interesting to me. I met different teachers with different methods and ideas about teaching. I was able to share my problems with other students as well as listen to theirs. My experience at Leland has been very fulfilling. Thank you for everything. Sawce ?0YVL walk 54.0. Dear Leland High School Now that I have been attending Leland for my senior year and am about to leave, I would like you to know how much I enjoyed it. Everyone here has been so nice to me and helped me whenever necessary. You simply can't imagine what an experience it has been to attend school in a foreign country, especially when there is such a difference. Rallies, football games, the rooter-bus, the snackbar, House of Representatives and even the counselors were entirely new to me. I am afraid I will miss all of these when I return to Ger- many this year. I would like you to know that I am happy to have gained new friends. As we walk down the aisle, reflections of our past three years - laughter, sorrow, friends, teachers, games, dances - come back to us - and then we walk on! Orientation 1966 and we met as a class. We were to be Leland's first class to be promoted from Sophomore to junior to Senior. The rallies and games brought out a new spirit that we hadn't experienced in junior high. We began to feel a spirit that stayed with us throughout our three years at Leland. As juniors, we returned to find a new and dif- ferent year awaiting to challenge us. We found a new Sophomore class, and Seniors, and junior History instead of Drivers Ed. As Seniors we returned to orientate yet another future generation of Leland students. Our Senior Year has been the best - our defeat in football over Pioneer at San lose City, the Senior Carnival, Senior Ice Skating and the Senior Ball. Yes, graduation is here - and we have many mem- ories and reflections of our three years at Leland. May those of you that continue at Leland find your experiences to be as meaningful and re- warding as we have. The Graduating Class of 1970 FISHER, RICHARD Ft. Ball 10,11,125 Soccer 125 Track 12. M , 97 The most important judgement of a team in competitive sports is how many times that team can end up on the pos- itive side of the final score. A team may accumulate many first downs or com- pleted passes, however, these statistics do not equal the final amount of points on the scoreboard. Everyone likes a winner, as the saying goes. But what about teams that try their best, but somehow, someway , just can't seem to reach that elusive plateau of success. Many hours of great exertion in' prac- tice, both mental and physical, are put into our football program. This effort is not only displayed by our football players, but by the coaching staff as well. Dennis Heath runs another for the Chargers. I was very pleased with the team the last few games because I really think that they finally pulled themselves together, and played outstanding foot- ball. This is probably a good time to give recognition to the boys who really did an outstanding job throughout the year. First, I would like to pay tribute to a boy we lost during the season, Steve Thompson who died of a football injury the third week of football. I think that we lost an outstand- ing citizen. A trophy has been set aside to be given to the outstanding sophomore football player each year. The award was won this year by Tom Menniti, who was also selected to the First Team All-League STAL. He was the outstanding player on the Soph- omore team. The outstanding lineman was David Gotschal, the most versatile football player on the team. He played end, tackle and center. This left the tallest player at 6'2 . Lacliing physical size, the sophomores have largely compensated through teamwork and a pressing defence. Soccer requires unusual skills not normally developed by American boys because in games we think with our hands rather than with our feet. However, Leland's athletes were quick to learn dribbling, tackling, kicking of many varieties, as well as the special techniques used in heading the ball. Outstanding members were: Captain Dave Boswell, Center Forward Mark Smith, who contributed much with his great skills and playmaking ability, Wings Bob Wood and Ralph Lundberg, Inside lim Harding Halfback Al Wagner, Chuck Wimpee, Kim Hancock and Dave iMannyJ Samples, Fullbacks joe Taormino and Big T Ted Walls, and outstanding Goalie Mark Robards. Depth on this team was also an important factor with such exemplify boosters as: Rich Singer, Dan Terrell, Tom Davison, Ernie Mendoza, Tom Wilkus, Don Saia, Rich Fisher, lssy Pumarada, Rich Avidano and Bill Schisano. It is expected that next year will be a banner one because of the return of players Lundberg, Robards, Singer, Davison, Hancock, Wimpee, Wagner and Bosewell, plus outstanding IV additions. The purpose of this organization is to provide interscholastic competition for the highly skilled. Competively, Leland has gotten off to a success- ful start. The fall sports which include swimming and tennis found us placing second in swimming to Santa Clara and the tennis team was first in divi- sion. The A basketball team ended their season undefeated and the B team ended up in second place. Presently the girls are starting their volleyball and gymnastics seasons and in the last quarter they will be in badmitton and softball. Later this spring Leland will host the League Gymnastics Finals and a Saturday clinic on Karate and Self-Defense. G.A.A. has also planned a ski trip to Bear Valley and a camp- ing trip to Mt. Madonna. It is hoped that the girls in the organization feel that this year has been fun and successful and has met the objectives stated above. They not only got together, but they stayed together, worked together and succeeded together, making Leland a place in which we can all take pride. A sincere thanks to all those who contributed to this effort either by serving on a committee or acting a commissioner or justice. It was through you, as the branches of the house, that enabled so much work to be accomplished in so shorta time.
