This has been ac- complished! Thru the sincere desire, and sound character of our young men, we have truly established a Winning Tradition. A Football Program, wherever it is, or under whatever system it may be conducted is based on certain basic principles. The Keystone of these principles is the fact that football is a game of Great Emotion. A Team can only be successful when it is capable of developing an intense feeling concerning victory . . . and defeat. Our team was successful. The members of our squad willingly subjected their personal interests for the best interest of the Team. Because of them, this year, OUR TEAM CAME TO PLAY ... and in doing so ... they have rightfully earned the respect of Our School, Our Community, The Press, and other Football teams in the Santa Clara Valley. Finally, I humbly add that they have earned the respect of this co8 A Defensive tackle Ted Walls C733 seems to be caught in flight while blocking a Live Oak punt. This was the first experience in tackle football for most of the players. Offensively the Chargers were led by the running of Art Saldi- var and pass catching of Cary Riddell and Curt Moore, with Bob McLean and Erin Adams sharing the quarterback post. Defense proved to be the team's forte. A strong defensive at- tack was Ied by Bob Laubacks fine play at the lineback post, with able assistance from Rick Rule, lack Henderson and Rick Welde on the front line. R. McLean blocks as E. This years varsity had a slow start. Due to injuries and pool problems we lost two close practice games by one point. As the season progressed we were able to use our potential to put together a perfect 8 won and no loss league record for our second straight S.T.A. L. Championship. Outstanding was team captain Tom Ballard who broke the old League scoring record and was the League's most valu- able player. lim Thompson and Gregg Menges also were among the league scoring leaders. lordy Andrew, Bob Rob- ertson, Steve Darrow, Tom Boyd and Bob Edgren led the leagues best defense. lt's going to be a hard job to replace the 6 starting seniors. However this year's Championship Soph team will help in next years rebuilding. MW Tom Ballard, the leagues Most Valuable player, moves in for another goal Leland's john McCoy tries in vain to block a Pioneer goal attempt. VARSITY BASKETBALL ATER POLO TEAM The 1968 Sophomores had an outstanding season. The Sophs had an undefeated league record and a 13 won and 1 loss season total! Their only loss was to powerhouse Buchser by 1 point. The Sophs had good speed and size this year. Pete Thompson led the scoring with 55 goals and was all-league 1st team. Wayne Mat- RETAINS CHAMPICJNSHIP SOPHO CRE hewson had 51 goals and was named M.V.P. for his fine all around play. Pacing the defense was 1st team all-league goalie jim Slacke. 2nd team all-leaguers Daveed Schwartz and Don Apple also added to the depth of our fine team. This group of fine sophomores should help re- place our graduating seniors and help continue our winning aquatic tradition at Leland. --'ian --,.'3.rf', 'f -Q zjllliliiiff 5 izqj 32, 'V G57-fl-5, -A r wfxt- 'e11a?,ff71:3'5f'?51 .1',:.y4g.n lp gt, gg,igigfea-wgfg-b.f..,W 3-eisifl, Q ---sfhi-fsfwQi.-aiiiw 'f5'v,w-1'-wuz 22+ A 'A 'IV JL '. ,s 2'f45- 3 W-Ww,,1M 'iF-PY: -frifiw 55' -'ff ,ima -vga W 1' - ??Iqga:x-g?eR43iH'P59'fM'5'v7 f- J'w ' S2f5,'9'iQi' PF . Both Riddell and Slacke were first team members and high scorers. The Chargers went on to a 16-5 season record and 10-2 league record. League losses were to Willow Glen by 2 points and to Gilroy by one point. MVP was Rick Rule, team captain Mark Robards, and outstanding defensive player Bart Wilson. Team balance, defense,'and desire were reys to our season. We have finished the constitution, which was rushed to completion for the opening of Leland in 1967. One of the major changes which was insti- tuted was a nominations convention. This system of selecting school offi- cers, stimulates student interest and provides for qualified candidates. In addition the nominations convention is an excellent learning opportunity. This past year, it was a great pleasure and chal- lenge being A.S.B. Presi- dent. I want to take time here to thank all those people who made it a pleasure and rose to the challenge. Without the many hardworking com- missioners it would have been an impossibility to handle the associated student body. It seems that we have created a kind of spirit this year that is unique to this school. In newspaper each student learns to work in a group, they learn responsibility because a good finished product depends on each person. 1st Page 2nd Page Shelley Mueller Viki McLean 4th Page 3rd Page Bob Graviano, Story Editor Bonnie Adshade Sonya Sako Terry Huggins , -. 41 TAFF . atime for news . Adviser Mr. Goldstein In producing a newspaper stu- dents are not just confined to the rigors of story writing. They must deal with people outside Leland in interviews, advertising and publishing. I hope this year, through the newspaper, every person in- volved has reached beyond him- self and has enlarged his scope. Every now and then I get im- posed upon in such a manner that I am completely unable to locate a suitable excuse for escape. Such a problem has been the Leland Lip, which is, believe it or not, a legitimate publication. Initiated as a fun change-of-pace, it gradually became a genuine passion, eating up many a sleepless night as I would attempt to dream up an- other silly article, and pass it off as being literary. All kidding aside, the Lip has served many inportant purposes at Leland this year. While the Lip brought the student body a little closer, and increased the interest in school-based affairs, it has also proven to be extremely suitable for lining garbage cans and wrap- ping dead fish. Although the entire staff has complained often and loud of the burden of creating a newspaper every day, I would say that it has been a uniquely rewarding experience. Ed. Sam Mash This years theme for the Leland Legend is time, and assessing the class, the book, and the school year ... has been quite a time. The class has impressed me this year as an experience, unique, original and a phenomenon that could only happen in the time and the place it did. lt's permissive organization and the 'spirit' of the class made for an exciting year with all kinds of times, times of work, play, friendship lnot necessarily in that order! and times when we 'ain't got time', but overall it is a time to remember. The spectrum of the yearbook class, the school activities, the students and teachers alike, all com- pound to make this time at Leland, in it's uniqueness a passing spree of learning, sharing and understanding. I am left with the tenseness of an ac- tion filled football game, the uplifting of a dance, and the fatigue of over coming a trial. l'm moved by the pass- ing oftime, wishing all could enjoy time as I did this year. aiyki Yearbook Class wigs , .gg and E1 P-1... gunman C ... PRlNCIPAL'S MESSAGE Some believe there is nothing that one man or one woman can do against the enormous array of the world's ills, yet many of the world's great movements of thought and action have flowed from the work of a single man. A young Monk began the protestant reformation, a young general extended an empire from Ma- cedonia to the borders of the earth and a young woman reclaimed the territory of France. It was a young Italian explorer who dis- covered the new world, and the 32 year old Thomas jefferson who proclaimed that all men are created equal. These men moved the world and so can we all. Few will have the greatness to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation. It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal or acts to improve the lot of others or strike out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope and crossing each other from a million differ- ent centers of energy, and daring those ripples, build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. These thoughts of the late Senator Robert Kennedy provoke a mighty challenge to each of us. As these acts of courage and beliefs oc- cur within a framework of justice and concern for others, not only is human history shaped but hope that people will live in harmony and understanding is continually renewed. Each of us has a tremendous responsibility to see that this hope is fostered. I know we are capable of this - I know that this must be done. fr, 7,2 rf' ' . ff 2if'l-,aifrvfl K ' ' I Aaron Seandel, Principal ,ef- 3 Mr. 1. 1. Ridley The task of counseling is not an easy one.
