This is an ideal as prevalent todag as it was hundreds of gears ago. during the ,Middle Ages. Despite the passage of time, we earrg out the sentiment in much the same manner as it was carried out in the medieval era. Ages have gone bg, but not the firm belief in this ideal and the means of attaining it: development of a well-rounded individual through an education of mind, spirit, and social skills. Jn medieval times, hope for the future lag in the knighthood ,An aspiring knight did not receive his title until he first served as a page, then as a sguire. It was during those gears he received an education in mental and social skills. the former being attained through private tutorship and the latter bg a carrging out of the code of chivatrg. llet his education was not complete until the aspirant developed a phgsieal prowess and more important, a devotion and respect to the castle and realm which he was to defend Jn September of the gear past, Leland High School opened its doors for the first time. Where once had been fields and orchards now stands an institution dedicated to producing hopes for the future. flere, as was true with the knights of old we receive our education in three areas. Through studg we gain a knowledge irreplaceable for the future. Through the numerous activities we learn how to function and succeed in our societg. .And through a development of spirit, both phgsicalig and mentallg, we gain an incentive to succeed in all our future guests. President Vice-President Che student Government at Leland fligh School is organized to provide the students with the opportunig to de- velop leadership. Gommunication between the students and their government is done through the J-louse of Representa- tives and class meetings. Student activities, projects and eupenditures are also passed through these organreations. During the second semester mang new faces were seen in student government. New officers, commissioners, and rep- resentatives were elected which gave more students a chance to participate in their government. J-laroldis kidneys were damayed by disease and he required very expensive treatment. The Car Rally was held to hebr Harold 's family pay for the eupenses. The 6'ar Nally proved to be very amusiny. Out of the hfty-siu cars that started only about twenty-hoe ended up at the destination. After endiny up at such places as San .7ranc1sco, ,Monterey and ,fllviso most of the contestants made their way back to the Dance which was held at the ,Almaden Country Club. The play proved to be an outstanding performance in both acting and production. Mr. Hobbs Vacation was a comedy enacted by a cast showing talent far above the average. Mr. Hobbs was portrayed by Bill Higgens who adlibbed his own character which paralleled the role of Mr. Hobbs. Inspired by Mr. LoBues excellent direction the students excelled in carrying out their individual roles in each play. The drama department also presented another play which was entitled All My Sons . It was presented late in the spring. This drama involved a fathers failures in himself and the affect it had on his family and immediate friends. It was a contrast to the first play but it too turned out very well. 88 Phofvgraphy Under the able direction of Mr. Dave Dickerson, the Charger Photography Staff had an eventful and interesting year. Students captured exciting and memorable campus and social activities for Leland's yearbook and newspaper, while often endangering their lives dodging blocks on the side- lines or balancing on a teetering ladder. Working many long hours in the well-equipped de- veloping lab these students made an outstanding contribu- tion to the campus life. Piedmont 's depth proved the deciding factor as theg hnallg proved victorious but onlg after ,Celand showed that theg knew how to plag football. Che storg was the same in three of ,Celand 's other contests. ln the ,Cive Oak. San fose and Gilrog games the 6'harger gridmen showed that theg had pride in their school and spirit. When the swim team was formed Coach Wright felt he had good prospects for both league and regional championships. The end of the season proved his prediction to be true. Both the Sophomore and Varsity teams exhibited fortitude and determination in practice and competition. Many strong, breast stroke, freestyle. and back stroke relay swimmers contributed a great deal to team victories. Scott Johnson exhibits the correct form of the forward dive from the high dive. The diving team coached by Miss Rotty has done a good job this past year. All the boys on the team have proven to be excellent divers. The team acquired many league victories. Scott Johnson, has helped the team gain many of its wins. However, not only one of the team's members can be accredited for victories gained. All the members of the team contributed to its success!
