DEDICATIO We wish todedicate this issue of the Messenger to Mrs. Margaret Dauchy. We all know Mrs. Dauchy has been advisor for many classes as well as for this year's Seniors and she is one of the most versatile teachers we have ever known. But more than that, she has been, and will always remain, our friend - someone to whom we can turn for understand- ing and help, whenever the need arises. We cannot begin to eipress our thanks and ap- preciation for the endless active and intangible services she has given so willingly in her devotion to all of us. And we know we shall miss her at Leland and Gray. When we entered this fall as Juniors we found our responsibilities increasing, we were beginning to take them more seriously, and look ahead to grad- uation, college, other training, the service, or jobs. We'll overlook our showing in the magazine drive and concentrate on the wonderful Prom we gave the Seniors in May. Our green and gold class rings ar- rived in October. Although we are sorry that some did not return, we welcomed Carolyn Blake, Thomas Brooks, David Banford, and Barry Hough as new members. We gave the freshies a picnic Sep- tember 23. We landed third in the magazine drive competition, but that doesn't bother us as we sopho- mores have made an accounting of ourselves in every activity of the school. We quickly rallied to show what the Class of 1959 can do by coming in second in the magazine drive competi- tion. Members work on committees and enjoy their projects. Each year the intramural program has grown in response to the interests of the students. This year, archery was added and about 40 participated in three groups during the fall. In the spring and fall, these sports are held out-of-doors. During the winter, boys and girls alternate daily in the use of the gym during the noon recesses. All students who are interested have an opportunity to participate. The intramurals also serve the needs of those who are not selected for the competitive sports teams or for those who are unable to include physical education classes within their daily class schedules. The girls play interscholastic games in basketball and softball. A large squad started softball and after two early victories and some warm weather some of the girls lost interest and the squad dwindled to 13. We lost one game to Arlington late in the season and ended with a 4 win 1 loss record. In the fall of 1955 we played two games with Whitingham and traded wins.
