Tragedy Leaves Legacy Of Hope October 25, 1986 — a date that stunned the student body of Leipsic School and the entire Leipsic community. Angie Rayle and Rick Valdez, both members of the class of 1987, tragically lost their lives in an automobile accident and the devastating loss painfully left family, friends and classmates to face life’s cruelest reality. It is desired, however, that their legacy not be one of sorrow, but rather one of hope and spirit. These two unique individuals were not afraid to face new challenges; in fact they met challenges with enthusiasm and excitement. These youths were willing to use every bit of their potential; they were not handicapped by their lack of self confidence or self control. They desired foremost to excel, whether it was in the area of academics or athletics. Each of our lives has been enhanced by these individuals and may the memories of their spirit challenge us to utilize our abilities completely and to pursue our goals with courage. Homecoming Homecoming 1986 was a unique experience for ail involved. An electrical storm and heavy rains delayed the start of the game for an hour and prevented the traditional pregame festivities. Homecoming activities began on Thursday evening when the cheerleaders held a pep rally and bonfire. The winner of the “Black Knight contest was announced, and the senior entry took top honors, followed by the sophomores' entry. They all were burned later in the evening at the bonfire. Everyone tripped out when the juniors’ mongloid spat fireworks! The 1986 Homecoming Court consisted of Queen Lori Walls, senior attendant Ann Logan; junior attended, Becky Steingass; sophomore attendant, Stephanie Vance; and freshman attendant. Tami Nu-veman. Escorts down the field were to have been senior football players Mike Fenbert, Sam Walther, Shane Ellerbrock, Doug Hiegel, Mark Russell, Curtis Farthing, Todd Nuve-man, Rob Franks, Martin Lopez and Glen Schroeder. The fellows could not do the honors, however, and the court had their fathers escort them Unique down the muddy field at halftime. The game itself was an interesting event. Van Buren’s Black Knights and the Vikes played in the rain for the first half of the ball game. The Vikings ended up on the short end and lost the game 12-6 in double over-time play. The Viking Brass donned raincoats for their show which they performed after the game. A Saturday night dance sponsored by the Student Council turned out to be extremely successful despite the disappointment of the previous evening. All who attended enjoyed dancing to the sounds of “Fusion, a live band made up of O-G students. An added bonus for the students was Coach Phillips’ singing “Born To Be Wild.” — Ann Logan Senior classmates dress like NERDS to show school spirit. Presenting the 1986 Homecoming Queen Lori Walls.
