The most evident was that of new Superintendent Kenneth Boyer, and a new Secondary Principal Scott Langenderfer. With the fresh and novel approach these two men offered, it wasn't long before the LHS students, faculty, and Leipsic community, realized the numerous alterations in the present school system that were to occur. Within months after their arrival in their respective offices, they, along with our school board, instigated an advisory council. A council was chosen and soon began meeting to devise methods for improving the school system. Other changes that came about during this past school year range from the discipline and rule enforcement style to alterations made in registration and the entire make-up of a school day to be effective starting with the 1987-88 school year. These, and many other modifications made recently at LHS. can also be accredited to the Leipsic school board. These elected representatives have the final say in all new and altered policies. — Denise Weis and Brad Peck. School Board Members — Row 1: Earl Goodwin; Bill Ellerbrock. We began telling fellow classmates our dreams, life ambitions, and our hopes and wishes for the future. It appeared that we shared everything with each other from classes, study halls, and lunch to secrets, hangouts, and much more. Our class officers for the year were Lori Walls, president; Rick Valdez, vice-president; Elaine Krein-brink, secretary; and Eric Steingass, treasurer. The class was well represented in the Student Council with Sam Walther, Jodi Myers, Ann Logan, Leann Christman, Donna Schroeder, Shyra Inbody, and Michelle Schroeder. August 26 began our long-awaited senior year and our final days at LHS were now upon us. As we entered the doors on that first day, a new administration was there ready to greet us. In September Lori Walls was chosen to reign as our 1986 Homecoming Oueen. Ann Logan was selected as our senior attendant and the ten senior football players were to be the escorts. With October came the selection by the class of the Halloween Court. Elaine Kreinbrink and Mike Fenbert were chosen to be Gueen and King. Jill Kuhlman, Eric Steingass, Lorissa Meyer, and Shane Ellerbrock completed the court. In sports, Eric Steingass and the girls cross-country team, led by senior Angie Rayle, advanced to Regional competition. October was also a month of tragedy as a terrible accident claimed the lives of two of our classmates, a friend from Ottawa, and seriously injured another. It was perhaps at this time and the trying moments that followed, that we truly appreciated the friendships and the closeness we experienced as the “Class of ’87.” November brought an end to the football, volleyball, and cross-country season and the start of the basketball season. The seniors sold cheese and sausages as their sales project and those seniors going on the class trip had to make their first deposit in November. Soon December came with preparations for the class trip, Christmas vacation, and a preoccupation of passing assorted articles from one classmate’s yard to another. January marked the halfway point in our final year at LHS. It seemed hard to believe that it was time to study for and take semester exams all ready as well as work on term papers. Greg Niese and Denise Weis took the senior math test at the Maumee Valley Math Test in mid-January. February was soon here and nine senior IOE girls represented their group at regional competition. Elaine Kreinbrink was chosen as the county DAR Good Citizen. March proved to be a very busy month. Seniors Sam Walther, Tim Meyer, Greg Niese, and Mike Fenbert represented the Industrial Arts class at competition in Dayton. The Leipsic group came home with first place in the state. Janine Sands, Maxine Schroeder, and Lori Walls participated in the state IOE Contest held in Columbus and seniors Shane Ellerbrock and Mike Feldman, along with junior Chad Rigel, placed second in district competition in a small engine contest. Doug Hiegel and Mike Fenbert were selected as new inductees of the National Honor Society. They joined the ten previously selected seniors. The American Legion Post in Leipsic announced Ann Logan, Elaine Kreinbrink, Greg Niese, and Matt Hiegel as being the high scorers in the class on the annual Legion test. The seniors going on the class trip sold assorted Easter items in March to help them earn spending money. April brought the production of our all-school play, “They Run In Our Family,” in which sixteen seniors participated either on stage or behind the scenes. The LHS Ouiz team consisting of seniors Greg Niese, Curt Farthing, Denise Weis, Tim Meyer, and sophomore Rolando Valdez, brought home a second place in the BVC tournament. Mid-April brought the annual senior class trip to Florida. Thirty-seven seniors and their four chaperones enjoyed seven days and seven nights in the balmy Sunshine State. Upon their return home, senior band members Maxine Schroeder, Janie Lammers, Kathy Keeran, Jodi Myers, Troy Gillespie, and Darrell Walther accompanied the band on their trip to Washington D.C. May was quickly upon us and it seemed as if our senior year was here and gone in a flash. The juniors sponsored the Junior-Senior Prom on May 2. Terry Altman and Leann Christman were elected Prom King and Oueen 1987. May 2 was also the day that seniors Greg Niese, Darrell Walther, Mark Russell, Elaine Kreinbrink, Lorissa Meyer, Ann Logan, and Maxine Schroeder participated in the Scholastic tests held in Ottawa. May 15 was the presentation of the Senior Awards and May 22 marked our final day at Leipsic High School. On May 31, we walked up and received our diplomas. This was to be our last official function as the Class of 1987. Elaine Kreinbrink and Lori Walls were the class speakers. Our class colors were burgundy and pink, with the pink rose as our class flower. Our motto was, “We cannot discover new oceans unless we have the courage to lose sight of the shore,” and a portion of the senior class sang the class song Friends” during the commencement exercises. Overall the 1986-87 school year was full of ups and downs. The senior class experienced many good times and sad times together. The year brought about new friendships and strengthened others. It taught us a lot from certain subject matters, to life in general, and it even matured many of us. We shall never forget our last very special year together. — Denise Weis Class Motto — “We Cannot Discover New Oceans Unless We Have The Courage To Lose Sight Of The Shore.’’ 16 Senior Copy Presenting The LHS Class Of ’87 Shane Ellerbrock Patty Escobedo Tracy Fackler Curtis Farthing Mike Feldman Mike Fenbert Sam Walther. Angie Rayle and Rick Valdez, both members of the class of 1987, tragically lost their lives in an automobile accident and the devastating loss painfully left family, friends and classmates to face life’s cruelest reality. It is desired, however, that their legacy not be one of sorrow, but rather one of hope and spirit. These two unique individuals were not afraid to face new challenges; in fact they met challenges with enthusiasm and excitement. These youths were willing to use every bit of their potential; they were not handicapped by their lack of self confidence or self control. They desired foremost to excel, whether it was in the area of academics or athletics. Each of our lives has been enhanced by these individuals and may the memories of their spirit challenge us to utilize our abilities completely and to pursue our goals with courage. An electrical storm and heavy rains delayed the start of the game for an hour and prevented the traditional pregame festivities. Homecoming activities began on Thursday evening when the cheerleaders held a pep rally and bonfire. The winner of the “Black Knight contest was announced, and the senior entry took top honors, followed by the sophomores' entry. They all were burned later in the evening at the bonfire. Everyone tripped out when the juniors’ mongloid spat fireworks! The 1986 Homecoming Court consisted of Queen Lori Walls, senior attendant Ann Logan; junior attended, Becky Steingass; sophomore attendant, Stephanie Vance; and freshman attendant. Tami Nu-veman. Escorts down the field were to have been senior football players Mike Fenbert, Sam Walther, Shane Ellerbrock, Doug Hiegel, Mark Russell, Curtis Farthing, Todd Nuve-man, Rob Franks, Martin Lopez and Glen Schroeder. The fellows could not do the honors, however, and the court had their fathers escort them Unique down the muddy field at halftime. The game itself was an interesting event. Van Buren’s Black Knights and the Vikes played in the rain for the first half of the ball game. The Vikings ended up on the short end and lost the game 12-6 in double over-time play. The Viking Brass donned raincoats for their show which they performed after the game. A Saturday night dance sponsored by the Student Council turned out to be extremely successful despite the disappointment of the previous evening. All who attended enjoyed dancing to the sounds of “Fusion, a live band made up of O-G students. An added bonus for the students was Coach Phillips’ singing “Born To Be Wild.” — Ann Logan Senior classmates dress like NERDS to show school spirit. On the evening of October 23, Mayor Dwight Buckland crowned Elaine Kreinbrink and Mike Fenbert queen and king of the 1986 Halloween Parade. Other members selected as the senior court were Lorissa Meyer, Shane Ellerbrock, Jill Kuhlman, and Eric Steingass. The evening began with a dinner at Maag’s Cardinal Room for all members of the court. Following the dinner was the crowning of the king and queen which started the annual parade. Three seniors, Donna Schroeder, Shayra Inbody, and Sam Walther, helped to add to the occasion by dressing up. The three seniors won the award for the funniest group. The Viking Brass also participated in the parade by providing music for the parade. — Eric Steingass Two seniors add color and fun to the parade. Gateways, castles, and a throne helped portray the royal theme. The disc jockey of “Soundwave” provided the musical entertainment for the evening. Members of the faculty and student body enjoyed dancing until the hour of midnight. A buffet was served on tables that were accented by miniature horse-drawn carriages and illuminated slippers. Couples entered the Cinderella fantasy land by walking through an archway filled with flowers. Approximately 45 percent of the upperclassmen are enrolled in such classes making it a popular choice for an education. The goal of this type of instruction is to prepare students for a four-year college education. College prep-classes are open to juniors and seniors. They have a wide range of class options. There are the two required college prep. English classes. American history the junior year, and American problems the senior year. The elective courses consist of two different languages, a variety of math classes, three different science classes, art, industrial art, journalism, psychology, and economics. All of these are not required, but they do provide for a more balanced education. College prep, classes prepare students for more than the next four years after high school. The teachers take a very active role in shaping their students to be well-rounded individuals. — Lorissa Meyer and Valerie Simon Greg is busy making his grandfather clock. Programs Expand Vocational Options Are Many The Leipsic High School vocational department is geared for those students who want to learn a specific skill or receive specialized training in a certain area. The LHS students are fortunate to have such a wide variety of vocational courses offered within the school system. The vocation programs include Intensive Office Education, Vocational Agriculture, Distributive Education, and Home Economics. Beginning in the ’86-'87 school year, Leipsic joined the Millstream Joint Vocational Cooperative, which is made up of 14 area schools with the Findlay School serving as a hub for the schools. This program has increased vocational opportunities at Leipsic. Overall 46% of the students at Leipsic are involved in one or more of the vocational classes. — Eric Steingass and Brad Peck Vocational 45 Basic Courses Given Students Required To Take Some Courses Leipsic High School offers several general courses for their students. General or required courses are courses students take each year in order to graduate. Students at Leipsic are required to take courses such as: English, speech, American history, and government. Leipsic also offers elective courses. Elective courses are not required. Students can choose them by preference. Many students at Leipsic are involved in one or more of the following elective courses: driver's education, art, typing, single survival, accounting, business math, and general math. — Eric Steingass Josh and Frankie sharpen their typing skills. ACTIVITIES Student Council Plans Events Homecoming Assembly Highlight Year Sam Walther was at the helm of the LHS Student Council for ’86-'87, and he found that being SC president is a challenge. Council is made up of three representatives elected from each grade. Mr. Scott Walthour served as advisor for this year's events. Student Council members organized the Homecoming festivities, a post-game dance, and the Air Force band as an assembly program. This group of young representatives worked together with the new administration to make ’86-’87 a great year. — Karen Holl Student Council sponsored a great assembly featuring a five-member Air Force rock band. NHS Members Inducted Students Must Meet Qualifications Leipsic High School honors those students who hold a 3.0 grade average or higher and who have shown good Leadership, Character, and Service qualities. On March 9, 1987, nine juniors and two seniors were inducted into National Honor Society. A ceremony was held during second period with sophomores, juniors, and seniors in attendance. A repeat cere- mony was held in the evening for the parents of the inductees. Superintendent Ken Boyer spoke about the honors of being a NHS member. National Honor Society members attended the annual county banquet April 7 at the Ottawa V.F.W. The group held a dance after a home basketball game for their money making project. — Ann Logan and Lorissa Meyer Quiz Team Gains Knowledge This year’s Quiz team was faced with a lack of experience. With only three returning members from last year’s group, advisor Ms. Mickle had to organize and prepare these students as best she could for their upcoming season. The group practiced nearly every Tuesday after school during the season and they participated in a match every other Thursday with a county school. Leipsic also hosted the all-county scholastic tournament this past year. Ottawa-Glandorf won the tourney overall, as well as earning recognition for obtaining the best season record in the county. Although the LHS team did not earn a winning record for the sea- son, the group learned not only numerous trivial things they were always questioned about, but other things such as teamwork and cooperation. They also gained many new friendships throughout this time with team members and students from the other county schools they competed against. — Denise Weis Clockwise: Curt Farthing, Steve Niese. Scholastically, Shane Ellerbrock was honored for obtaining the highest grade point average in the Chapter. Doug Kreinbrink was chosen as developing and using his leadership abilities to the greatest level in the Leipsic Chapter. As a first year member, Chad Ellerbrock received the Chapter Star Greenhand award for the displaying the highest development among the new members. Mike Casteel received the Chapter Star Farmer award for his success in the areas of leadership, home projects, and scholastics combined. For the fourth straight year the Chapter achieved a gold rating in parliamentary procedure. Ron Diemer, Doug Kreinbrink, and Tony Alt all received gold ratings in public speaking. These students participated in contests that were held in Lima. Various number of pizza parties also highlighted the year. However, they didn’t just think of their own stomachs for they donated canned goods to the needy last fall. In the spring they had their annual employer employee banquet. The DECA Club wrapped their year up by taking a field trip to Ced-er Point in the summer. — Amy Altman DECA 59 Girls Launch Careers In IOE Thirty girls at LHS have taken the elective courses of Intensive Office Education. Each day of school these senior or junior girls spend five periods perfecting their secretarial skills. This chapter is one of the many clubs associated with Office Education Association. For the fund raiser this year the girls sold candy in the fall and carnations for Valentine's Day. They used $200.00 of this money for a donation to the Special Olympics. Nine members of the senior and four members of the junior Intensive Office Education classes traveled to Vantage JVS in Van Wert to participate in Region 16 competitive events. Three of these girls advanced to State competition. Janine Sands placed second in Shorthand II at Regionals and placed sixth in Shorthand II at State. Lori Walls placed first in Shorthand II at Regionals and Maxine Schroeder placed first in Office Support Systems at Regionals. Each girl must participate in class competition which makes her work harder to achieve. Every month each story had to be written, copyread, typed, copyread again, set in type, and sent to the printers before the newspaper came out. Each reporter had to meet approximately four deadlines every month. The ten reporters were divided into three groups: feature stories, news, and sports. Co-editor Ann Logan, Eric Stein-gass, Lorissa Meyer, and Karen Holl wrote the feature stories. News stories were written by Denise Weis, Kim Ellerbrock, Tracy Fackler, and Amy Altman. It was a learning experience for everyone involved as Mrs. Alice Dewar assumed the duty of being the Le-Hi advisor and with few members having served on the staff in the past. Steve Dufrane, Leipsic’s Josten representative, spent a considerable amount of time teaching the inexperienced staff the many how to's” of yearbook designing. He also bought supper for the entire staff and Mrs. Dewar after they surpassed his $4000 ad campaign goal. Le-Hi 63 Elementary Aides Are Important Many students helped various elementary teachers this past year. They assisted by grading papers, running errands, and designing bulletin boards for these teachers. Through aiding, these students made friends not only with the particular teacher involved, but also with many of the students who grew to admire them during the year. — Denise Weis The girls who compose the elementary office aide staff are a very important aspect of it. They operate the switchboard for the school’s phones, deliver messages, and assist the members of the elementary staff throughout the day. Their services are a vital part of the efficiency produced by this office. — Denise Weis There has been a noticeable change in the elementary library this year. The year started with the band marching in the Firemen's Convention at Wauseon in the summer and various contests in the fall. The Viking Brass was also featured at half time during the football games. After football season, the group moved on to concert band when they presented concerts in February and May. During this time the band members were busy raising their money for their new uniforms and working to pay for their trip to Washington D.C. Although it rained a great deal during the trip, it did not dampen the spirits of the Viking Brass. There is only one way anyone can be accepted into either of these organizations and that is to earn a letter by participating on a varsity sports team. Each sport has its own unique requirement in order for a student to receive a letter. A cross-country and or track runner must have an average of one point per meet; a football player must play in 50% of the quarters for the season. This is the same for volleyball and basketball; a baseball player must average 50% of the innings for the season. Once a student receives a letter, the athlete should meet scholastic requirements and maintain high standards of conduct both in and out of athletics. They attended Bluffton Cheerleading Camp sponsored by the Nationwide Cheerleading Association. During daily evaluation the Varsity squad earned two superior ribbons and the Junior Varsity squad received a superior and an excellent. The girls also received two special awards for hall decoration and a super pom-pon routine. For a hard days work in stunt class, they received a medallion. They also received a friendship plaque. During football season the Cheerleaders held a pep-rally, organized spirit week, and sold mums for Homecoming. The girls also worked hard making signs for the lockers, halls, and the gymnasium. Besides cheering on the Vikings at basketball games, the girls were busy baking cakes, selling tickets for the 50-50 drawing, and selling sweatshirts. — Chris Niese and Jill Knepper. The season record of 2-8 does not reflect the “almost wins nor does it show the hours of practice, hours of playing time, hours of team scouting, or the hours of plotting team plans and plays. For second year Varsity Coach Denny Phillips the past season was another step in molding his football program at LHS. While ten seniors led the Viking squad, their experience was not quite enough to put the Vikes consistently in the win column. The season will not be a stand out in the record books, however, the true value of athletic competition — sportsmanship, comradeship — will be, hopefully, the characteristics the '86 team will remember. — Rob Franks Seniors and returning lettermen are Row 1: Larry Laubenthal.
