Starting The Year With Spirit . . . ------------------------------- New faces appear in the cheering squad Roger Kaufman shows his joy of dancing Many things happened in 85 at LHS to piece together the memories and make it an unforgettable year. The doors of LHS opened once again for another year of studying, sports, and student activities. The students were ready to crack down and hit the books! There was a lot more to student life than just studying. Homecoming week brought out the spirited side of everyone. The high school classes all worked steadily on their Homecoming plaques. A Friday night dance wrapped up the festivities. In late October the student body took part in local history when President Reagan made his whistle stop tour through Putnam County. The fall ended with the school play Father Knows Best . After the leaves had fallen, students anxiously waited for snow. Students spent the days at home to see President Reagan sworn in for a second term. Though the winter was harsh, the fans still came oui to cheer on each basketball team to a winning season. Both seventh and ninth grades won their respective leagues. For three days the school was filled with the sound of music when LHS hosted the county music festival. Noontime brought about several intramural activities sponsored by the Student Council. The snow melted away leading to a bright new season. It was obvious that spring was just around the corner. The spring sports started practicing at the beginning of March and showed championship seasons. The all-school play was performed before a live audience three times. The play was entitled You Can't Take It With You . Our school was also host to two county banquets during the spring season. The NHS banquet and the FFA banquet were held in Leipsic. The Industrial Arts department brought home several awards including a second place finish at the state competition. The Quiz Team finished its first season with a winning record. They gave a good performance at the county-wide competition. Twenty-nine seniors enjoyed the hot sun in Florida while it was an unusually warm spring in Leipsic. Seven proud science students displayed their science projects at the State Science Fair. Two Superior ratings were received by Leipsic students. As the school year closed the students felt the effects of the new state regulations. Not only did each delay have to be made up, but the seniors had to complete the full school year. The graduation date had to be backed up until June. The seasons pieced together a fun and exciting year for all the students. The week included the following days: hat and shade, punk, opposite, color, and Hawaiian. On Hawaiian day people were seen in everything from shorts and lei's to Hefty's 3-ply grass skirts. At noon while some people were catching some rays under the bright gym lights, others were practicing the Hula. Thursday night's bon-fire got everyone fired up for the game with the Van Kuren Knights. The big game finally arrived, with Queen Debbie Selhorst and her court at the center of attention. Although we lost the game, the festive mood still lingered in the air. More students attended the Student Council's Homecoming dance since it followed the game. The theme revolved around Cyndi Lauper's hit 'Time After Time . The cafeteria was decorated in rainbow colors. ,, . , Homecoming 21 On the eve of October 31, the witches, goblins, and ghosts of Leipsic came out to haunt the town. This year the annual Halloween parade was moved from the downtown business district to the Leipsic football field. Before the parade, the Viking Brass entertained the awaiting audience by sharing the music performed at football games throughout the season. Queen Jenny Fenbert and King Robert Solis were aided by Mayor Jim Russell and his wife Ann Russell in ruling over the Halloween festivities. The production was a comedy in three acts. On November 16th the LHS stage turned into the living room of the Jim Anderson family. Mr. Anderson (Dean Walther) was always trying to change his family's ways, but Mrs. Anderson (Marsha Dres-bach) would show him the sensible side of the issue. Their oldest daughter, Betty, (Jodi Schroeder) was attempting to go on a date with her boyfriend Ralph Brinkworth, Jr. (Todd Pfister) when her father forbid them to leave the house. The situation grew until the police were called in and arrested Mr. Anderson, Mr. Brinkworth, Sr. (Darrell Walther), Ralph, and Betty. After Mr. Anderson spent a night in jail, the misunderstanding was settled. For the most part, this cast had previous experience on stage. As a result, the lines were creatively memorized, but on the night of the production everything went smoothly. Student directors for this production were Matt Logan and Karen Walls. Beth portrays a typical teenager Patty (Tatia Farthing) helps Bud with math Kathy wraps Mr. Anderson (Dean Walther) around her little finger, while Bud (Chris Steingass) works on his math Mrs. Anderson (Marsha Dresbach) tries to understand her husband's way of thinking 24 Fall Play Betty (Jodi Schroeder) and Ralph (Todd Pfister) discuss the advantages of glasses Members of the garden club are overcome with the events in the Anderson household Father Knows Best Wagner, Marsha Dresbach, Tina McCullough, Kathy Weis, Nadine Griffith Fall PIay 25 Row 1: Jenny Fenbert, Kathy Binger, Todd Pfister, Randy Schroeder, Row 2: Beth Buckland, Chris Steingass, Jodi Schroeder, Dean Walther, Tatia Farthing Row 3: Darrell Walther, Scott Jones, Jeff Vance, Lori Leipsic High School's great escape to the sun included 29 seniors and 4 chaperones. The annual senior class trip consisted of an eight day stay at Sheraton Twin Towers in Orlando, Florida. The exciting week included visits to Sea World, Epcot Center, Wet 'n Wild, Daytona Beach, Once Upon a Stage Dinner Theatre, and Walt Disney World. Of course, there were many unforgettable events that took place in the hotel, like toga parties, ice fights, and elevator parties. The guys will never forget the 9th floor and the gals will never forget the 4th floor. The initial day of the excursion was filled with excitement — getting up at 3 A.M., dragging Rick Moyer onto the plane, and arriving in 85 degree weather. After landing in Orlando the travelers decided to soak up some sun and take a refreshing dip in the Jr.-sized Olympic pool. At the Nautilus Theatre at Sea World the seniors were entertained by Kurt Thomas. He thrilled the audience with his world champion gymnastic exhibit. And, of course, everybody saw his or her hero at Disney World — Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck. The tans will fade and photos will be put away, but the memories will remain. 26 Senior Class Trip Debbie David gets a tan Seniors enjoy their day at Daytona Beach Cindarella's Castle is a highlight of Disney World Rick Moyer and Connie Niese prepare for take-off Epcot Center looks towards the future Pat Schroeder basks in the sun Seniors Soak The girls pose with water skiers Up The Sun Senior Class Trip 27 Rick Moyer and Robert Solis are on the prowl Joce Russell poses in the sun Todd, Chris, and Dean wear tuxes to the prom Everyone gets into the swing Seniors enjoy their night Square dancers get down to allemanding left and allemanding right Friends take a group portrait 28 Prom Queen Deb Selhorst and King Roger Opie Niese Hot air balloons and pastel colors made this year's prom come alive. The Juniors chose the theme, “Up Where We Belong and decorated the Fogle Center to reflect these ideas. Balloons filled the ceiling and murals covered the walls. Those who entered felt as if they were in a dream world of their own. At 8:00 P.M. everyone began swaying to the music provided by Daybreak, and capturing the memories with photos. Later in the evening, Deb Selhorst and Roger Niese were crowned Queen and King. At 10:00 P.M. a dinner buffet was served. This was a change from the normal pre-prom meal. When the clock struck midnight the dream was over and everyone went their separate ways, but the memories will last through the future years. As the concert band strummed up Pomp and Circumstance the graduates solemnly marched by in their caps and gowns of purple and white. Father Michael Ricker, of St. Mary's Catholic Church, gave the invoation to initiate the commencement program. The first speaker was Kathy Holl, the salutatorian of the class. Her speech was entitled Carbon to Carats . Throughout her speech she gave the transformation of the Class of '85 from mere lumps of coal to sparkling diamonds. Next, the valadictorian, Joce Russeil, challenged each member of the Class of '85 to live to their full potential and allow their futures to glisten as beautiful gems. The feature speaker was Rev. James Badertscher, of the Church of the Nazarene. He spoke of the power words that each graduate should try to attain. The Class Choir sang a medley of theme songs from Cheers and Greatest American Hero . Finally, the long-awaited moment was upon the graduates as they were handed their diplomas by the board members. The best performances had to belong to Angie Rayle as she defended her PCL title as well as making a return visit to the district meet at Lima. She consistently finished well in the big meets and won most of the small meets in which girls were involved. From a record standpoint, the 1984 Cross-Country season was a disappointment. The team had set a goal of finishing with a .500 record, but that goal fell short. During the season, the guys were led by a trio of runners consisting of Eric Steingass, Doug Haselman, and Mike Feldman. The highlight of the season was the sectional meet, as the Vikes put together their best team effort. Derrick Niese and Troy Gillespie joined the other three runners already mentioned as they all finished under 18:31 and under 48th place in the meet out of 83 runners. The most valuable runner for the 1984 season was Eric Steingass, and the most Improved runner was Derrick Niese. Rick Valdez tries to extend his lead Mike Feldman leads the Vikes to a victory Cross-Country 45 Vikings Fulfill Coaches' Expectations 1984 proved to be an uplifting year for the Viking Varsity Squad. They ended the season with a 6-4 record. In the early going the Vikes rolled through two scrimmages, as well as games with Patrick-Henry, Vanlue, and Arcadia allowing the possibilities of a BVC championship. These hopes began to crumble with defeats mainly on home turf. Four members were chosen for first team honors: Jeff Vance, Running Back; Roger Niese, Guard; Jeff Fenbert, Defensive Back; and Dale Niese, Linebacker. Four more received second team honors: Pat Schroeder, Center; Louis Lau-benthal. Defensive Lineman; Jeff Fenbert, Tight End; Tom Berger, Defensive End. Beth Buckland was chosen as the Most Valuable Server and Deb Selhorst was recognized as the top hustler for the year. Beth Buckland was also the leading scorer with 141 points. Beth and Debbie David were both selected for 1st team PCL. Lois Niese was selected for 2nd team PCL. Deb David was also selected for 1st team BVC, and Beth Buckland 2nd team BVC. Jenny Fenbert and Lois Niese both received Honorable Mentioned for BVC. The Junior Varsity was led by Lori Walls, Annette Tooman, and Dawn Badertscher. These girls put some of the spark in the JV team this year. Under the leadership of their coaches, Mrs. Nancy Cain, and Mrs. Judy Newell, the girls formed a solid team and worked together for their victories. This season also marked the last year that Mrs. Cain will be coaching. She stepped down from the coaching responsibilities after six years of hard work and success. The Vikes bounced back however, with six straight wins over Liberty Center, Arcadia, Continental, Cory Rawson, Columbus Grove and Ayersville. Overall, the Vikes ended their season with a 13-8 record, a second place finish in the BVC, and fourth place in the PCL. The highlight of the BVC race was the championship game at Van Buren between the Vikes and the Knights. This season ended with several Vikes receiving recognition for fine performances. Scott Mangas and Jerry Bermudez received second team BVC honors. Jeff Fenbert placed on the third team, and Bob Hile and Scott Schroeder received honorable mention. In the PCL, Mangas received a first team position. Fenbert a second team position, and Jerry Bermudez received honorable mention. Jerry was also selected to play in the District 8 all-star game at Lima Senior. First year coach Don Coletta was chosen to coach the all-star team. Under the leadership of the senior team members and the guidance of Coach Coletta, the Leipsic Vikings proved to be a powerful basketball team and had a very respectable season. The participants in this activity worked throughout the year refining their skills and promoting spirit to the student body. Preparation started early as all those interested in cheering tried out for the squads in March. The girls were evaluated on their ability, creativity, and technique by the Bluffton College Cheerleading Squad. The work really began after the selection was made. The girls at that point began to make plans for the summer. Both the Varsity and Reserve squads attended summer camp at the University of Toledo. During the year, the girls organized two major pep sessions. The first took place during football season and featured a slide show presentation to the music Eye of the Tiger . The other pep session was Leipsic's version of the Family Feud. Stars of this year's basketball team answered the difficult questions to score points for LHS. The girls worked on raising the morale of the players. The players would find signs on their lockers, balloons decorating the hallway, cookies to eat, and even decorated pillow cases. The crowd was very important to the cheerleaders. The squads promoted spirit by giving out purple power pins and organized the Purple Pak pep club. Miss Mickle was instrumental in organizing the girls from the start. As the year progressed, Mrs. Pat Newell assisted the girls with their projects. The squads enjoy working together to promote enthusiasm in the stands Tina McCullough holds the littlest Viking. Amber Harmon Cheerleaders 53 The girls' varsity team experienced a rollercoaster year. The season got off to a slow start, but, by midseason, the hoopsters were picking up momentum. The team gave a very respectable performance at the Ayers-ville Holiday Tournament and received the runner up trophy. The final thrill for the Vikes was the win of the first game at Sectionals over Patrick Henry in double overtime. Those girls receiving honors were: Deb David earning 2nd team BVC, Honorable Mention in the PCL, All Tourney Team Member at Ayersville, and she was the team's leading scorer; Deb Selhorst grabbing Honorable Mention in the BVC and the team's MVP; Jodi Schroeder receiving Honorable Mention in the BVC and Outstanding Rebounder; Kelly Lammers earning Honorable Mention in the PCL and All Tourney Team Member at Ayersville; and Sue Winkle receiving the team's Outstanding Foul Shooter and Most Improved Player awards. They went 11 innings in one game only to lose by one run to the State Tourney Finalists, Miller City. Also, they recorded an eight inning game with Hicksville, again, one run put the Vikes in the losing column. They have had some games which seemed to be no contest for our players. One example is the second game against Pandora Gilboa. Leip-sic scored 38 runs to PG's 4. That's the best way to describe the members of the Viking Brass this year. Early in the summer, the band marched at the annual Memorial Day Parade and Fireman's Parade. In July the Vikes continued to march at the Putnam County Fair show. To finish the summer the band gained another first place at the Pemberville Competition. Several exhibition shows, including Ottawa and Arcadia, marked the start of the school year. Even though the Viking Brass performed for all football games, there was still enough time to compete at Spencerville, bringing home first place trophies for the Marjorettes and Field Commander, Nadine Griffith. The highlight of the season was the band's two performances for President Regan. The band was selected to greet the President at BGSU in late September. A few weeks later the Bradd once again met the President at his Whistle Stop Tour in Ottawa. By this time, they had become old pros with the secret service. Concert band soon rolled around and Leipsic hosted the Putnam County Music Festival. In early March the band recorded its selections for WLSR radio. The annual spring concert ended the very busy year for the Viking Brass. This group of students made up one of the largest organizations in the school. The club began its activities in the fall with a Halloween Par-ty Scavenger Hunt held at the school. The traditional fondue party was held in the winter. Club members experienced the tasting of various fruits dipped in chocolate. The third major party was a Mardi Gras celebration in March. The onion soup and pastries made the event special. To help support all these activities, club members sold Tup-perware. The members were also aware of the need to help others. They participated in the Heart Association's Jump-A-Thon to raise money for future heart research. Eight members of the club participated in a 2 week trip to Geneva, Nice, and Paris. Providing this service gave our members a front line view of the President. In January under the leadership of the club's president, Doug Fenbert, a free throw shooting contest was held for the fifth and sixth graders in the Leipsic community. Prizes were given to the winner and runner-up contestants after they had a shoot-off during the halftime of the Ottoville basketball game. The Seventh Annual Brookhill Carnival was again hosted by our members at the Brookhill School and Training Center on Thursday afternoon on May 23. As usual all the students, club members, faculty, and advisors had a fun-filled afternoon. This year will probably mark the end of the Leipsic High School Key Club. The reason for this is that the parent club, Leipsic Kiwanis Club, has voted to cease being a Kiwanis Club as of September 30,1985. Therefore, it is unlikely that the Key Club will exist at least under the name, but it could possible reorganize under a new name or become affiliated with a new group. The play “You Can't Take It With You was a classic production about a very strange family. This play held special meaning for Miss Stertzbach because it was a remake of her first production at LHS. The plot centered around the Sycamore family and their unusual behavior. Grandpa, the head of the family, believe that each person had a right to choose his lifestyle. Grandpa's choice was not to work or pay any income tax. The problem occured when Alice, the conservative Sycamore daughter, fell in love with Anthony Kirby, Jr., vice-president of a major company. Alice was ashamed of her family and didn't think they would fit into the Kirby mold. To add to the confusion, the Kirbys came to dinner on the wrong evening and saw the true Sycamore family. After a night in jail, a broken engagement, and threats to leave town, Alice finally realized that she and Tony could be happily married. The cast of the play was one of experience. Therefore, they had a lot of fun during the performances. There were unforgettable mistakes, like Mr. Kolenkhove calling Donald — “Sam . Then they specialized in a specific area such as Elementary or Clubs. They all were involved with collecting pictures, writing copy, laying out pages, typing, and thinking of headlines. Other members designed the cover and did art work or photography. In the fall several members attended a Josten's workshop at NBC in Lima. These people learned the basic techniques for organizing and completing a successful yearbook. The staff regularly met every Thursday after school. During this time the members would spend their time leafing through hundreds of candid pictures, planning layouts, eating, planning the weekend activities, and in the last desperate moments working on their pages to meet the company's deadline. Even with all of the frustrations of rewriting stories, waiting for pictures, and looking for lost pages, the staff formed a working unit sharing the pride of their accomplishment. The hard work and extra time paid off with the completoin of the 1985 Le-Hi. These people serve as the governing body of the school. The Council organizes activities to promote student participation in the school. The first major event sponsored by the Student Council was the Homecoming Festivities. The Council members organized the election of the court, planned the crowning ceremony at the game, and sponsored the dance. To celebrate the Christmas holiday, the Council provided the students with an afternoon at the movies. The film shown was The Devil Max Devlin. A Horse Tournament was organized as a noon time activity. Linda Haselman challenged Scott Schroeder for the championship. Scott was able to pull out a win on the last letter. Throughout the year, the Student Council honored those individuals who had worked to help the school. PAL (Pride at Leipsic) awards were given to these people. To end the year, the Council sponsored a spring dance. These activities have included fingerprinting the elementary students, cleaning and updating the trophy cases, sales projects, the annual pizza party, and purchasing roses for all senior members. Mando Tijerina sparked the team when he broke some school records. He broke the Jr. High record for the mile and the 800 meter run. He continued to better his time throughout the season. With Mando serving as anchor for the mile relay team, the four runners succeeded in also breaking the school record.
