The senior speeches had both remembrances of the past and looks toward the future. It was noted that seventeen percent of the class graduated with a 3.0 grade point average or better. From Shade Day to Punk Day people were seen with shade trees, sunglasses, and wild punkish outfits. Other days gave the LHS fans opportunities to show their spirit by wearing their favorite hats, dressing inside out, and wearing purple and gold attire. Thursday night was designated for the bonfire which boosted everyone's spirits. The Homecoming ceremonies continued through Friday night with the football game and the in-trouction of the queen and her court, the crowning of the queen, and the announcement of the plaque winners — the Seniors — whose plaque best corresponded with this year's theme of A Year Of Excellence. The Homecoming festivities ended Saturday night with the Homecoming Dance, the theme being Rock of Ages. The entertainment was provided by J.B. Sound. Most importantly, it meant that the annual Halloween Parade was here, also. Queen Kim Ellerbrock and King Nick Vance reigned over the harvest festivities. Kay Lammers and Christina Roa served as the attendants. Chosen as escorts were Chuck Schroeder and Chris Schroeder. The court carried out the responsibilities of judging the entrant's costumes based on categories such as funniest, most original, and best single. The parade turned out many different costume ideas. Even Leipsic's own Viking Brass marched up and down Main Street disguised as something other than themselves. Just imagine seeing a trombone player in diapers or the flag corps dressed as the “Old Lady in a Shoe ' with her kids, of course! It gave the entrants and spectators great moments of enjoyment and entertainment. This year's Halloween Parade was truly a success! Paradise of Love was selected as this year's theme. The junior class had spent many hours planning and decorating for the event. A waterfall, stream, and bridge added to the atmosphere of the evening. The festivities began at 7:00 p.m. with a dinner of roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, noodles, rolls and butter, cake, punch, and coffee. As the couples filed into the dance they made their selections for this year's king and queen. After the ballots were counted the announcement was made that Kay Lammers and Rick Selhorst would reign over the prom. The music for the evening was provided by E-Z Company. The lead singer, Mike Niese ('76 Grad) celebrated his birthday so the juniors provided him with a cake and a song. The band even supplied the music for a rollicking square dance. Following the dance the movie Tootsie was shown. Michelle and Eric take a break from dancing Shau of Leipsic — Ron Klinebriel Thirty members of the Class of '84 will never forget their Senior trip to Florida. Many of the group experienced the excitement of their first commercial flight. Various events were scheduled for the week long adventure. The class saw the sights at Epcot Center, Disney's Magic Kingdom, Sea World, Wet'n Wild, and Daytona International Speedway. At Once Upon a Stage Dinner Theater the Seniors attended the performance of South Pacific . The Seniors in search of the sun, spent a windy day at Daytona Beach. The painful sunburns, ice fights, wrestling matches, toga parties, farmer boys' room, and Miss Lawrence's last night in Florida party are just a few of the memories that will be cherished by this group. The Vikes compiled an overall record of 13-7 with a fine tournament showing. They gained the Sectional Title by beating Van Buren and Patrick Henry by easy margins. The team then moved on to Bascom to defeat Woodmore in the District opener, only to have a heartbreaking loss to Northwood in the finals. The Vikes had a fine showing in the BVC tieing for 2nd place at 6-2. The PCL proved to be tough competition for the players this year leaving them at 2-4. Tony Niese led the Vikes with a .84 ERA and Greg Steffan led the bats with a .344 clip. Individual honors gained were Tony Niese — 1st team PCL and BVC, Golden Bat Award, and Best Pitcher; Chuck Schroeder — 2nd team PCL and BVC; Greg Steffan — 1st team BVC, Honorable Mention PCL, and Best Batting Average; Isaac Barrientes — Honorable Mention in both PCL and BVC; Shane McMackin - Honorable Mention PCL; Robert Solis — Honorable Mention BVC. 39 Senior Tony Niese throws another strike! Varsity Cagers Use Youth For Strength Benny Quintero, Mr. Vanderhorst (coach) The 1983-84 Boys' Basketball team relied on its two seniors for leadership. With only three returning lettermen, experience at the Varsity level was limited. Coach Vanderhorst often called on his four juniors and three sophomores for diversified tasks. The Viking cagers finished their regular season with a 9-12 record. The Vikes had a few heartbreakers, losing by only three points to Arlington and two points to a fine Ottoville team. They also had their share of slim victories, beating Ka-lida by just two points and Continental by five, only to lose to the Pirates in the first game of the Sectional tourney. The players received the following awards: Chuck Schroeder — All Northwest Ohio Honorable Mention, District 8 All-Star Team, 1st team PCL, 1st team BVC, MVP, Outstanding Rebounder, Outstanding Foul Shooter; Scott Mangas — 3rd team BVC and Honorable Mention PCL; Jerry Bermudez — Honorable Mention in both PCL and BVC; Jeff Fenbert — Honorable Mention BVC; Bill Berger — Most Improved R6S6rV6S; Carl teller, Rodney Lieb, Doug Haselman, Don Altman, Isaac Bar rientes, Mr. Walthour (coach) Varsity; Scott Schroeder, Scott Mangas, Kevin Lam-mers, Bill Berger, Chuck Schroeder, Jeff Fenbert, Jerry Bermudez, Dean Walther, Robert Solis 40 Chuck Schroeder Benny Quintero LHS OPP Patrick Henry 56 72 Holgate 58 71 Arlington 54 57 Vanlue 95 57 Miller City 54 76 Ottawa Glandorf 49 63 Liberty Center 81 67 McComb 61 49 Continental 56 51 Arcadia 63 81 Columbus Grove 51 70 Cory Rawson 81 65 Ayersville 52 62 Van Buren 45 61 Kalida 53 51 Hardin Northern 56 44 Pandora Gilboa 76 65 Ottoville 46 48 Liberty Benton 78 48 Ft. This production was a change of pace for LHS because it was the first musical to be performed in three years. This was also the first show to be accompanied by a dinner theater. The dinner was held prior to the final performance. Those attending the dinner theater were entertained with a medley of Oz songs sung by a sextet. The host, Chris Steingass and hostess, Marsha Dresbach then escorted the group down the yellow brick road for the stage production. Although The Wizard of Oz was very familiar to the audiences, this production was full of surprises. Of course, there were those unforgettable moments such as Sam Walther's sign falling off of the Emerald City doors and Todd Pfister's foot crunching the plastic apple as he traveled through the enchanted forest. This show was a product of a combined effort of the cast, directors, accompanists, art department, and stage crew. Once the show was over the audiences returned to the land of reality, but memories of the land of rainbows will linger. 57 58 Jenny Fenbert Cathy Flores Nadine Griffith Jerry Hernandez Kathy Holl Scott Jones Kathy Lenhart Matt Logan Louis Lomeli NOT PICTURED Beverly Chamberlain Dan Macias Dean Critten Laura Seem David Minjarez Diana Vasquez Ruben Minjarez Roger Agner Beth Buckland Michaelene David Felix Guerra Tina Kelly Norma Lopez Emily Berger Sue Butz Dawn Dillinger Jim Hardy Kevin Lammers Alan Maag Jill Berger Amy Cuevas Marsha Dresbach Brenda Haselman Louis Laubenthal Roxy Madrigal Jerry Bermudez Deb David Tatia Farthing Linda Haselman James Lee David Maynard Juniors Susie, Jodi, and Linda show off their new outfits Chris Medley Paula Niese Joce Russell Deb Selhorst Jeff Vance Dean Walther Chuck Medley Roger Niese Darrin Schroeder Robert Solis Linda Wagner Kathy Weis Rick Moyer Victor Paniagua Jodi Schroeder Chris Steingass Laura Walters Mary Wyant Connie Niese Dave Peck Laurie Schroeder Larry Stewart Dennis Niese Butch Petersen Pat Schroeder Chris Thomas Gary Niese Joe Rayle Scott Schroeder Tina Tijerina Julie Niese Richard Rikard Susie Schroeder Roger Tooman OFFICERS: PRESIDENT - Karen Walls, VICE PRESIDENT — Lisa Crawford, SECRETARY — Dale Niese, TREASURER - Rachel Peck Debbie Alt Bill Berger Bobby Jo Butz Bill Drew Doug Hardy Roger Kaufman Don Altman Tom Berger Curt Craun Jay Dunham Randy Hardy Robin Klinebriel 60 Lisa Crawford Steve Critten Ann Cupp Shelly Fackler Doug Fenbert Jeff Fenbert Doug Haselman Randy Bobby Hile Stacy Knepper Haselman Marcia Lee Knoll Kreinbrink NOT PICTURED Mike Brecht Jane Dillinger Mike Thompson Martin Chasco Linda Meiseman Wally Vasquez Charles Christopher Cathy Sanchez Joanne Balbaugh Tonia Berger Dan DeLaRosa Al Flores Rod In body Kelly Lammers Isaac Barrientes Kathy Binger Kelly Dillinger Scott Harden Chris Kaufman Kelly Lawrence Sophomores Rod Licb Kim Meyer Matt Osborn Dennis Recker Tony Schroeder Sue Winkle Nick Lomeli Dale Niese Moises Paniagua John Rodriguez Mark Silver Michelle Wurst Connie Maag Dave Niese Susana Paniagua Brian Schindley Mike Solis Renee Wurst Bernie Madrigal Gary Niese Rachel Peck Mark Schoenauer Annette Tooman Scott Wyant Scott Mangas Lois Niese Todd Pfister Butch Schroeder Lori Wagner Junior Ybarra Bryan Mathison Nancy Niese Ponce Quintero Diane Schroeder Karen Walls Tina Zechman Tina McCullough Diana Nieto Roberta Rayle Rob Schroeder Carrie Walthers Carl Zeller OFFICERS: PRESIDENT — Todd Nuveman, VICE PRESIDENT — Mark Russell, SECRETARY - Lori Walls, TREASURER — Leann Christman Jodi and Eric show how easy it is to work together. Along with many fine performances during the football season the Viking Brass competed at the Spencerville Invitaitonal Marching Band Competition and came up with a fifth place trophy in a field of 10 very competitive bands. The drum line and flag corp earned second place caption trophies at this contest. The switch to concert band started them working toward a Christmas concert, while the Pep band enjoyed a successful basketball season. The annual Spring concert brought an end to the graduating seniors' band year. After playing to one of their largest audiences, they honored the 13 seniors who left their ranks. Cheers, routines, and stunts were practiced and then judged on the major qualities that a cheerleader should possess. During the summer the spirit leaders were busy ordering uniforms, getting organized, and attending competitions and camp. They attended the Nation-Wide Cheerleading camp at Bluff ton College in July. As a result of the long, hard hours of practicing, the Leipsic pep squad brought home two blue ribbons received from daily evaluation, a plaque won at the closing night's competition, and other special ribbons for hall decorations and spirit. The J.V. squad also won two blue ribbons and a plaque. At the end of the summer, the Varsity squad traveled to the Defiance County Fair for a competition. Here they performed a pom-pom routine. The school year brought forth even more responsibilities for the girls. They did not end cheering at football and basketball games, the girls kept busy by decorating the halls, lockers, and locker rooms. They also organized pep assemblies and other spirit arousing events. As a special attraction for the basketball season parents' night, the Varsity and J.V. squads presented a flashlight routine at halftime to the .38 Special song If I'd Been the One''. Members have an opportunity to participate in many fun activities. In October the members dressed in costumes to attend a Halloween party at Matt Logan's home. During the winter months the club held a fondue party. The french cuisine of fruit dipped in chocolate was a new experience for many of the underclassmen. The spring festivity was a Mardi Gras dinner. Miss Stertzbach, with the able assistance of the upperclassmen, made onion soup and pastries for the event. French club also works for good causes. This year as in other years, the French club participated in a Jump for Your Heart program sponsored by the American Heart Association. They raised $380.00 for research. In the summer of '83, eight members of the club went on a 16 day tour of France, the second in the clubs history. The members who went were: Kathy Binger, Marsha Dresbach, Nadine Griffith, Kathy Holl, Scott Jones, Matt Logan, Joce Russell, and Dean Walther. The 16 day tour was divided between Paris and Tours. The first nine days the group toured Paris and surrounding points of interest, such as Versailles and Fontainbleau. The following seven days were spent in a home stay study program at Tours. These students came home to share their experience with the rest of the club. The two clubs periodically have combined meetings and worked together on projects. This past year the Key Club helped bag and distribute peanuts for the Kiwanis Peanut Sale. In return for their help the Kiwanis men threw a pizza party and a time of wizardry at the local game room. The Key Club kicked off the year with a trip to Findlay to see how much a group of boys could eat at the Duff's smorgasboard. Funds for the Key Club's projects and activities were raised by having a Pizza Kit Sales in October. The reward for the successful fund raiser was a trip to Cleveland to see the Browns play the Houston Oilers. On the evening of January 20th, during the halftime of the Cory-Rawson Leipsic games, they organized the freethrow shooting competition for the fifth and sixth grade boys and girls. A new basketball was given to the winners in both divisions in each respective grade. The Fifth Annual Brookhill Carnival, sponsored by the Key Club, was held on the afternoon of May 16th. Games, refreshments, and prizes were given to all the students of the Brookhill school. To culminate the year the Key Club traveled to King's Island for a day of fun and excitement.
