As seniors looked forward to the end of their rainbow, they, along with other students, looked forward to various school activities that would take place throughout the year. Along the way, many memories were created by those who participated in those events. This was the finest year for the Viking volleyball team. The girls faced the challenge of some excellent teams to come out on top at the end of the season with as 12-6 record. The girls won sectionals, then advanced to district, a good accomplishment for all of those involved. The Viking basketball season brought tears of joy and sadness. The first major hurdle of the season was to defeat the undefeated Kalida Wildcats with the score of 52-50. The fans went wild, creating more spirit than LHS has seen in several years. The basketball team continued its triumphant ways by advancing to the district game which was held at the Elida Field House. The fans enthusiastically supported the team and dressed in various shades of purple and gold for the occasion. The Vikes played an excellent game, leading on the score board until the final few seconds. Our season ended with the knowledge that the Viking team was on the move. Throughout the basketball season, the newly formed Mean Machine, an all male cheering section, supported the cheerleaders in leading the LHS cheering section and in organizing new cheers. The Mean Machine consisted of 25 members and was under the direction of high school principal, Lee C. Schmitt. Members in the top picture are: Row one: Mr. Schmitt, Dave Torres, Barry McCullough. The j mouthwatering smell came fcfrom the Home Ec. room, as r the members of the FHA club -and the Home Ec. students created their delicious sweet petal bread. For three days, they baked, packaged, and sold over 600 loaves of bread in order to finance improvement projects for the Home Ec. Department. Many challenges were met | this year by those students who strived to obtain their pot , , of gold. Participation, cooperation, and ability made v it possible for all who worked hard to reach the end of their rainbow. Whether it was sports, club activities, new organizations, etc., LHS students found that student life in school or out of school can be enjoyable as well as rewarding. — C. ODE TO THE SENIOR CLASS PLAY In the beginning, there were 14 senior cast members, 2 senior, student directors, Ms. Stertzbach, and, of course, Eric. Practicing at odd hours with only half the cast, we found ourselves on opening night with butterflies in our stomachs and bright lights in our eyes. Curtain, Lights, Action — so the story goes ... Some say it was to be serious. The cast felt the play to be a living, vital force. It had emotion, comic relief, anger, confusion, pain, love, and a few mistakes. We had memorized lines, expressions, and positions. The audience responded to the players' delight! Stepping on the stage, to act a totally different personality made us wonder why we weren’t Broadway stars. Of course, talent was never wasted. Although the lights have been turned off, the stage swept clear, the makeup washed away, and the costumes are now collecting dust, no one can ever forget A Man Called Peter. C. Kirsi was from Suolahti, Finland and stayed with the Ken Shidler family. She came to the United States to learn about our way of life and to better her English. She found life here very different, but very exciting. Kirsi's hobbies are swimming, riding horses, bicycling, jogging, and being outside with nature. While in the States, she enjoyed meeting a wide variety of people and forming many new friendships. Kirsi's plans upon returning to Finland include completing her two remaining years of high school. Then she plans to attend college, but presently she is undecided about her major. She enriched the lives of many students at LHS with her outgoing personality and friendly smile. The long, tiring bus ride down to the sunny state was quickly forgotten on April 11 at Wet-N-Wild, which was the first attraction the seniors invaded. That evening they were entertained by a live stage production of 'No, No, Nanette', at the Once Upon A Stage Dinner Theater. April 12, found the seniors at Walt Disney World, and they spent the entire day at the Magic Kingdom. A short visit at the Kennedy Space Center started the day of April 13, followed by an afternoon of sun and waves at Cocoa Beach. Polynesian food and luau-style entertainment highlighted the evening's activities. Cypress Gardens and Busch Gardens filled the day of April 14, and the seniors were on their way home that evening. Late in the afternoon of April 15, 46 tired seniors arrived in Leipsic, Ohio. Though the pictures taken will someday be lost, and all the memories will fade, the friendships made on the trip will last forever. — L. The theme of this year's prom was the “The Best of Times.” The evening's activities began with a dinner at 6:30 p.m. The dinner consisted of roast beef, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, noodles, relish tray, rolls and butter, cake, milk and coffee. Those attending enjoyed dancing to the music that was provided by “Chameleon.” Roger Maag and Cindy Steffan shared the honor of King and Queen for 1981. Balloting took place following the dinner, restoring this old tradition. A Hitchcock production, the “Obsession,” was the featured flick for the midnight movie. During the summer of 1980. the cheerleaders attended cheerleading camp at Bluffton College. That week the girls received six ribbons for high ratings in everyday evaluation. A final ribbon was added to the collection for their excellent skit, which was performed by both the Junior-Varsity and Varsity squads. After the school year began, the cheerleaders made signs to decorate the halls, baked assorted treats for the team, and decorated the buses for the away games to help boost the players’ spirit. The cheerleaders were also in charge of motivating the students. They did this by holding pep rallies and planning a spirit week. Instruction is integrated in a simulated office atmosphere where emphasis is placed on applying previously acquired knowledge and skills as well as learning new principles and skills. The use of block-time scheduling provides flexibility within the program. The junior year establishes basic foundation so that senior students can be stimulated toward decision making, critical thinking, proper work habits and attitudes through project-office simulation. The Viking Brass had an active 80-81 year with practices during the summer, long before the start of school. Already in June they participated in a parade at McComb and in July the Viking Brass gave an all out performance at the Putnam County Fair Band Spectacular. An exciting day was spent at Cedar Point on July 9th where the Brass played in the morning and were rewarded for their good performance with an afternoon of relaxation. On August 23 the Brass, with director Karl Simon, came home proud and happy afterplacing 1st at Pemberville. On September 13, the Brass travelled to Defiance to participate in their parade followed by a made dash to Arcadia to perform in a Million Dollar Band-O-Rama. And on October 18, the Brass received a 2nd place trophy and highest rating on their color guard and general overall appearance at Antwerp. Later on in the year the concert band went to Lima to record at WIMA radio station. The Viking Brass also participated in many school functions. During the fall, a half-time show was presented at every home football game by the Brass. Band, Flag Corpts, Majorettes, and Drum Major, Dorianne Muller, combined for many outstanding performances. A Winter Concert and the Pep Band are two more of the activities the band members participated in. Band members are rewarded by the crowds' reaction to their performance and by an award given by Mr. Simon, called the Golden Note Award. It is given to students for attendance in class and at performances, for helping with their money making projects, and by picking up the field after home football games. Trophies are also give” to students who have done outstanding work and have had outstanding participation. 59 Row one: Jan Meyer. Julie A. Niese. Tammie Meyer. Julie Niese. Kim Ellerbrock. Jeff Schroeder. gave a good description of what the student council did this year. Each year students elect officers and three representatives from each class to make up the council. The council sponsored a mock presidential election in November. President Reagan was the choice of the student body. The council also sponsored many noon-hour activities. This year the activities included a euchre tournament in which Jill Mangas and Doreen Myers were winners for the sixth period noon hour, and Jane Schroeder and Jessica Schroeder were winners for the fifth period lunch break. They also held volleyball intramurals in which Roger Maag’s team was the final victor. His team consisted of Nick Selhorst. Randy Winkle. Wendy Dewar. Cindy Steffan. and Janice Krembrink. In basketball intramurals. Rod Drew’s team came out the winners. The team members were Russell Knisely. Richie Rosebrock. Doug Wells. Jeff Winkle. Mike Bennett, Tony Wurst. and Jessie Mmjarez. The softball intramurals were held, but halfway through they were canceled due to inclement weather. The student council cooperated with Miller City’s student council for a student exchange day. This event gave the students involved a chance to view and evaluate the other school. All in all. student council was very active and very well organized. Besides sponsoring many fun activities, they also gave a boost to school spirit and involvement. 65 s4cAcevett ? ?s4 Row one: Greg Schroeder. Duane Wilson. Carl Gerdeman. Mark Smith. Joe Schroeder. They worked in the elementary office as telephone switchboard operators, as teacher aides in the classrooms, and helped out in the library. One could have seen an aide working with a small group of students doing drill exercises, listening to a reading group practicing, making an attractive bulletin board, checking out skills or keeping score in the physical education class. The elementary library aides kept books filed and shelved and did some clerical work. The elementary school would have found it difficult to get along without their dependable help. They were truly V.I.P.’s.” — C. Plassman 77 Alan dances with his blanket. Charlie Brown flying his kite. “Practice makes perfect. That is one of the old cliches that has been going on for years. Well, with this year's musical production of You’re A Good Man. Charlie Brown' that old cliche proved to be true. The cast, Charlie Brown (Barry McCullough). Lucy (Cindy Peoples), Patty (Denise Tooman), Snoopy (Chuck Perry). Schroeder (Mark Ranes). and Linus (Alan Reed), put in many long hours of practice which sometimes consisted of arguments and frustrations. Through those long hours of practice, long lasting friendships developed. The humor and happiness of the show drew the cast. crew, and directors very close. Although this production began with a slow start with the director. Ms. Miriam Plassman. and members of the cast out with the flu for the first few weeks, the final weeks of rehearsal really showed the enthusiasm and anxiety of the cast members themselves. On the Friday evening presentation of the show, the cast received a standing ovation; however, it is really too bad that with all the publicity given to the production, it was not attended by as much of the public as was expected. Despite that fact, we did very much appreciate those who did take time to show their support for our high school. I feel that those who did not attend the show missed a once-in-a-lifetime-chance to sit back, relax, and enjoy a very unique and different type of production. I enjoyed being a student director and working with Miss Plassman, the cast, the crew, and of course, my co-student director, Cindy Russell. I hope that in the years to come, all other musical productions will be as much fun and as unforgettable as this year's was.’’ — C. Bustamante Directors in conference. Hours of practice payoff The Leipsic High School started its first ever Cross-Country team this year. The cross-country team filled the gap for fall sports this year after the golf team was discontinued. Since this decision was not made until after the school year began, the team was already behind other area schools in their conditioning. Scheduling also presented a problem, Mr. Vanderhorst met the challenge of fitting our team meets into the already existing schedules of our opponents. Without much preseason conditioning, the team began running at meets. The team slowly progressed as the season continued as they won some dual meets and placed well in the larger meets. Progress can notably be seen in their running times as they improved tremendously as the season came to a close. Robert Nieto was awarded the Most Valuable Runner. He led the Viking Harriers at many of the meets, until a knee injury forced him to sit out the remainder of the season. With four of the team members returning, the future looks bright for the upcoming season at LHS. 83 ‘ttycct---- “rtytct----- 'yfyt e Row one: Todd Gibson. Alan Cupp. John David, Mike Knueven. The close victories, the big offensive nights, and the narrow defeats, kept all Vikings on the edge of their seats. Although not the most impressive record by a Viking team (6-4), this team carried on and upheld what has become a great tradition at LHS. Each team member has moments they will never forget, and each member gained characteristics that take many persons a lifetime to learn. The glory of running for a touchdown, catching a pass, making a key block, or making that important tackle, are all highlights of htis most successful season. They fought back against several shocks that struck the team before the meet season began to become a competitive, respectable team. These trackmen improved their standing in the BVC and PCL and posted a winning season. The majority of them were good workers, breaking several school records. Five of the team members improved so much that they participated in the District Track Meet: Jim Restle in the 3200 meter run, John David (BVC and ROKYU Invitational high hurdles champion) in the high hurdles and the long jump, Keith Cupp in the shotput, Greg Hardy in the shot and discus, and Brad Brooks in the pole vault. ‘Semper Fidelis.' ” — Coach J. Restle Flying through the air! Running the final leg of the relay! The 1981 track season proved to be very exciting and rewarding. Our season was highlighted by second place finishes in the PCL, BVC, and Columbus Grove Invitational. Deb Rodriguez qualified for the third straight year in the 800m run at the state meet. The season proved to be a super team effort as the team had 15 lettermen and ended the season 11-2 in dual meets. The team also had 8 league individual champions and set 7 new school records! The winning continued the following week by defeating Pandora. 8-0. The next two weeks were tough for the Junior High Vikes with losses to Ottawa SPPS (6-0) and McComb (8-0). After a three week layoff the Vikings came back to tie Cory-Rawson (8-8) to finish the season with a 2-2-1 record. The 1980 season showed that the team was a defensive-minded group of players. The defense didn't give up a point in the second half of the last four ball games. This group of players, the 1980 Junior High football team, never gave up and were in every game until the final second. — Coach P. Leipsic Junior High Track teams enjoyed a successful spring this year. Many records were set this year by a variety of people. However, Jeff Vance and Debbie David were the most consistent performers at the meets, and set records for themselves as well. Overall, there were eight records broken by this team. Through team efforts they placed well in both the BVC and PCL. Flying over another hurdle! 102 fjcutcav (? e dead i4 “The Jr. High cheerleaders completed another busy year in February. New to cheerleading, seventh graders: Debbie Alt, Tonia Berger, Jane Dillinger, Rachel Peck, and Cathy Sanchez learned new cheers throughout the season and supported their team with signs and enthusiastic cheering at every game. Eighth grade veterans: Debbie David, Nissy Hansen, Nadine Griffith, and Joce Russell polished their gymnastics to continue impressing crowds with their skills. They even joined with the St. Mary’s 8th grade in February to do a pom-pom routine at halftime of the St. Mary’s-L.J.H. game — a Junior High first! — Mrs. B. The 1981 Le-Hi Staff presents this yearbook with great pride. The production of the Le-Hi resulted from the combined efforts of the staff and the advisor. The staff members worked many long hours after school sharing the joys and frustrations of putting the book together to meet deadlines set by the publishers. We would like to recognize the efforts of many individuals and groups who have been of assistance to us during the past school year. A special thanks goes to Mr. Brooks, Mr. Frank, and Mr. Restle for supplying us with many excellent photos. Our gratitude also goes to our advisor, Miss Suhr, for her unending ideas and advice. We would also like to recognize the Taylor Publishing Company, Mr. Steve White, and Mr. Rick Kruse for all of their suggestions and patience. We would like to thank the Le-Hi Staff for their help, without each individual’s extra effort, this yearbook could not have been completed. We have enjoyed the past year and hope that you will always journey to your rainbow’s end. Sincerely, Co-Editors Mike Knueven Pam Shidler 128
