Baseball Cl-IAMPICDNS OF THE RURAL OAHU BASEBALL CIRCUITU. This WQIS the title given to Coach Lawrence Kunihi- sa's championship Mules baseball nine which toppled all its opponents in the rural circuit. Thirteen returning lettermen from last years squad graced the nucleus for this years champions. Several mishaps occurred early in the season when Harry Ckumura, hard hitting outfielder, John Chinen, steady thirdbase- mang and Lawrence Monma, veteran short- stop were all out in the sideline with serious ankle injures that kept them out of several games. The mules championship squad includedg Catchers, Gilbert Sunahara and Harumi Kat- tog Pitchers, Takashi Motoyama, Bob Ya- mauchi and Akira Tanakag lnfielders, Bob Chinen, Yoshikazu Nakano, Yasuo Katsu- hiro, John Chinen, Daizo Yamanaka, and Lawrence Monmag Outfielders, Yukio Ko- mori, Henry Mondo, Yoshio Ichikawa, Har- ry Okumura, Tom Sugimoto, Buster Kuni- hisa and Bill Sugimoto. Student managers for thc team were Nobuya Takashige and Hironobu Hino. A short review of each Mule game follows. APRIL 12 Mules 8, Waipahu 1 at Waipaliu. The Mules nine captured its initial scalp at the expense of Waipahu by shellacking thirteen hits and 8 damaging runs. Y. Ko- mori and H. Mondo clouted homers for the Mules. A APRIL 16 Mules 7, Waialua 5 at Wahiawa. Overtaking a big 5-1 lead, the mules eked out a close victory over our ancient rival, the Waialua Bulldogs, before the largest crowd of the season. Pitcher Motoyama won his own game as he homered with the bases loaded. APRIL 23 Mules 10 'Waialee 2 at Haleiwa. 1 Lefty Tanaka gave a sterling performance on the mound for the mules by holding the Waial:ee squad to only 4 scattered hits and 2 runs. T. Sugimoto, junior, grabbed four hits out of as many chances. APRIL 30 Mules 12 Kahuku 3 at Kahuku. In the final and the championship game of the ROSL circuit, the mules nine salted away the penant by garnering 9 hits for 12 well earned runs. Bob Yamauchi pitched flossy ball behind the brilliant support of the entire team.

Richard Furukawa and Francis Young Co-Captains Basketball Our 1939-40 Rural Oahupchampionship Mules basketball team enjoyed a successful and banner' season under the able coaching of Mr. Edward Vail, by conquering all its opponents in the newly organized Rural Oahu basketball league. Approximately thirty enthusiastic basket- ball turnouts reported to Coach Vail during the Christmas vacation. Final selection of eleven resulted in a team composed of eight seniors, two juniors, and a sophmore. Once the smooth Mules' green and gold machine started their offense rolling, there was no stopping it as it bowled over team as the following record shows: 18 Waialua ---- 15 after team Mules Mules 21 Kahuhu ---- 20 P Mules 36 Benjamin Parker 10 Mules 29 Waipahu - - - 17 Mules 25 XVaialua ---- 21 Mules 2 8 Kahuku ---- 17 Mules 35 Benjamin Parker 17 Mules 31 Waipahu - - - 29 The team next represented thc rural league as undefeated champions to the 15th annual inter-island interscholastic basketball tour- nament staged at Kaui high school, February 21-23. Hilo high once again retained the championship. Coming into fourth position, the Mules were highly lauded for their fine sports- manship. Result of the inter-island tournament fol- lows: ' Mules 34 Baldwin Hi 24 Mules 19 Hilo Hi 38 Mules 18 NVaimea Hi 37 Donning the green and gold basketball suits were: co-captains, Francis Young and Richard Furukawag Nam Gee Chung, Sa- buro Yoshida, Ralph Teranishi, Edwin Ima- mura, Howard Hirono and Stanward Chun, seniorsg Tsutae Tomita and Lionel Lim, juniorsg and Albert Bolos, sophomore.

Tennis ,, Our unpredictable tennis squad under the tutelage of Coach Yanagisako and captained by Wing Ming Young ran through its Oahu high school tennis league with victories and defeats on its record. When the first call of tennis was announc- ed by Coach Yanagisako, twelve Leilehuans responded. These twelve boys each landed a berth on Coach Yanagisako's squad. The absence of Frank Plamores, four year lettermen was greatly felt by the team.
