live Tall, Think Tiall, Slll le Tall., This is what the bamboo symbolizes. Its tall, slender, flexible, yellow stem, bending towards the sky, and its green leaves swaying so gracefully with the breeze always seems to say, Live Tall, Smile Tall, Think Tall . Giving itself as an example, the bamboo, with its S00 species scattered all over Asia, North, South and Central America, and Africa, not only is a part of the beauty of nature but makes itself known as of worth to the world. Living up to its high ideals, it provides the world with many things. Its young sprouts are much used in the preparation of such foods, as chop suey and hekka. The orientals fix it in various ways, either pickled, candied or as asparagus. Unknown to many of us, the bamboo bears a grain similar to that of the barley, which the Chinese and the people of India substitute for rice. The stems, being firm and strong, are used as poles for houses, and split into strips provides planks for floors, roofs, and sides. Homes and their furnish- ings have been varied and made much more attractive by stripping and weaving the bamboo into various kinds of mats, beds, chairs, porch curtains, cradles, and numerous other articles. Of the harder and firmer species, cooking utensils, pails, and knives with durable edges have been made. Aside from its general use as fishing poles, cables, and bridges, a variety of fine paper has been made from the interior portion which is beaten into pulp to make it. Turning back to ancient times, this strong, firm, tree like grass , was a place of refuge in times of flood for the people in the Orient. Yes, the bamboo has and always will serve itis purpose in life. The ever pretty yellow color of its stem which bends with grace, and the evergreen leaves will always remind us, Class of '40, and may it others, also, that life and everything concerned with it, is beautiful, that the highway of life is a rough one and we must be strong, firm, and clean physically and mentally, that life is not only take , but a given and take process. ' Considered as one of the most wonderful and beautiful productions of the tropics, and one of nature's most Valuable gifts to man, there is no doubt, that the shining stars of our school life, teachers and parents, have striven to teach us to live the tall way of life so that we may be the most wonderful and beauti- ful production of Leilehua high school in the year of 1940.
