Its tall, slender, flexible, yellow stem, bending towards the sky, and its green leaves swaying so gracefully with the breeze always seems to say, Live Tall, Smile Tall, Think Tall . Giving itself as an example, the bamboo, with its S00 species scattered all over Asia, North, South and Central America, and Africa, not only is a part of the beauty of nature but makes itself known as of worth to the world. Living up to its high ideals, it provides the world with many things. Its young sprouts are much used in the preparation of such foods, as chop suey and hekka. The orientals fix it in various ways, either pickled, candied or as asparagus. Unknown to many of us, the bamboo bears a grain similar to that of the barley, which the Chinese and the people of India substitute for rice. The stems, being firm and strong, are used as poles for houses, and split into strips provides planks for floors, roofs, and sides. Homes and their furnish- ings have been varied and made much more attractive by stripping and weaving the bamboo into various kinds of mats, beds, chairs, porch curtains, cradles, and numerous other articles. Of the harder and firmer species, cooking utensils, pails, and knives with durable edges have been made. Aside from its general use as fishing poles, cables, and bridges, a variety of fine paper has been made from the interior portion which is beaten into pulp to make it. Turning back to ancient times, this strong, firm, tree like grass , was a place of refuge in times of flood for the people in the Orient. Yes, the bamboo has and always will serve itis purpose in life. The ever pretty yellow color of its stem which bends with grace, and the evergreen leaves will always remind us, Class of '40, and may it others, also, that life and everything concerned with it, is beautiful, that the highway of life is a rough one and we must be strong, firm, and clean physically and mentally, that life is not only take , but a given and take process. ' Considered as one of the most wonderful and beautiful productions of the tropics, and one of nature's most Valuable gifts to man, there is no doubt, that the shining stars of our school life, teachers and parents, have striven to teach us to live the tall way of life so that we may be the most wonderful and beauti- ful production of Leilehua high school in the year of 1940. lleclication Mother, father Dearest and nearest to our hearts. Years of toil and sacrificing You have given us. - We who have accepted all thesegthings Have but one Way to show 0llP Appreciation Wherever we may be, In school, at play, on land, or at sea. Whatever We say or do, There isn't a time when We don't think of you. In planning for this year book, There was a thought, and the thought was of you. We thought that if we had but one page, We'd dedicate it all to you. Bessie Lim to Nyun Lec In Memoriam DICK GOODRICH CClass of '40j We all knew him. Some more, some lessg But, he was our friend, of many, their best. He helped us solve our problems, Little, or even big, in life, in love, or even in our Trig. He Was courteous and kind, with a heart of gold, And in all his work, he reached his goal. Even as he trod that day to God, so Walked he from his birth In simpleness and gentleness, and honor and clean mirth. And now . . . He's not with us anymore, And yet . . . He is, for evermore. pl'0l0glle Before ye turn this page, know ye that This Book was made from more than paper, pen, and ink. This Book Was made by Torrid Brains Searching in so many Ways, so many thoughts, By dreams and care, by fight, by scorn, and some small praise When ye turn this page Ye will find smooth going Where We found it rough. Diligently We have built the road, That ye might find some small pleasure. We take . . . for Wage, forgiveness of our literary sins, and remembrance of the fact that- We Wrought our best for you and all to see. So gracefully its banner waves There's not a single thing so brave. It fears not wind nor rain nor sun, If faults it has, I find not one. -Stanley Kaneshiro Fog One morning as I looked through the window, I saw nothing but white. The trees were white, the houses were white Everything was white, And as I walked through the fog, I could feel the cool air touching me gently, As if it were whispering to me. But as hours passed by the sun peeped out, And soon the white fog began to move slowly, And I was left alone standing in the sun. -Betty Sawai Beauty of a Lady Her beauty was like that of an angel, Soft and delicate like woven silk, Her eyes were blue, shinning with tears, Shinning brighter than the evening stars. Her hair was soft, like golden threads, Hanging over her white shoulders, like moonbeams, Her lips were red, like the rose, Pretty and bright, with a shapely form, These facts written, when put together, Are my definitions of a beauty, given by God. -Catherine Fukushima Senior llall of Fame HIRONOBU HINO Alive in every part of his being and do- ing all that is in his power to improve our student body, Hironobu Hino, President of the Student Body, stands out in the Class of 1940. Full of witty sayings, usually said in calmness, he enlivens the otherwise would- be monotonous business meetings. He has fullfilled all obligations of a most capable president. SARAH KIM Gay, charming, sincere, and brilliant, this she has been. This young lady has earned a warm spot in all the hearts of the class of 1940. Her eagerness to serve and share, has helped us to trample our obstructions and obstacles which have time and time again been in our way during the days at dear old Leilehua. Editing the Feature Sec- tion of the year book, Vice President of the Student Council, member of the Na- tional Honor Society and holding numer- ous other offices, a more efficient worker there never will be found. YOSHIO ICHIKAWA If there ever is such a being as a Per- fect Gentlemanu he is the fellow named Yoshio. He is known throughout the campus as a man of looks, wit, and of outstanding athletic ability. Taking part in all phases of school activities, such as being the Treasurer of the junior Class, Treasurer of the Student Council, member of the National Honor Society, outstanding pole vaulter and baseball player, Yoshi has surely proven himself to be a real man. MERLE YAMADA As the old saying goes The words of the quiet one is usually heard, Merle will stand out in the class of ,4O as our prize package of someone quiet, yet conspicuous- ly standing out as one of our best students. As we go out in the world, she will always come back to our memories through our Senior Class rings. HOWARD HIRONO A gentleman thru and thru is Howard. He is quiet, intelligent and a wizard in calculations. His ability as a business man- ager has kept us ahead in every way con- cerning the annual. He deserves all the confidence and high esteem we hold for him. GLADYS AU Mr. Tony'i to fellow friends. With a tilt of her head she starts off VVe have exactly so many S ...,,,,,,,,,,,.. in the treasury, Don't you know? She's the Senior Girl Re- serve Treasurer. All in all, Gladys is a very dependable, studious and serious young woman. She has the Girl Reserve symbol stamped in her soul. We sometimes wonder how the office could keep on running if it weren't for Gladys' efficient and helpful assistance to our Secretary, Miss Bull. I DICK GOODRICH . Through his participation in many fields of our school activities, Dick has proved himself efficient, industrious, and depend- able. As chairman of the Athletic Commis- sion he has done wonders for our athletic problem. - e . Tall, dark, and handsome, he is a wizard in the field of Science and Mathematics. ROY LEE Known to all students of Leilehua fOr his remarkable ability as traffic officer is Roy Lee. Vlfithout his able leadership and technique we undoubtedly would not have won the high honor for traffic efficiency presented by the Honolulu Police Depart- ment. The prize was donated by Sidney Toler. A gentleman in every respect, he will be long remembered for his sincerity. YUKIO KOMORI Yukio has been the Gibraltar of our Senior Class. His leadership, reliability, patience, and ever-willingness has been the main factor for our success. His ability as a ball player combined with a magnetic personality will remain in our minds for- ever. He deserves our gratitude and thanks MARIAN CHUN . Known to all her friends as little Joe, Marian is undoubtedly one of the most popular figures in the class of 1940. Her charming personality will always place her among the top in whatever undertaking she may face in the future. Her scholastic standing also ranks with the top of the class and as Secretary of our Senior Class she has always worked very hard and efficiently. SALLIE WHITE lfVith all the qualities to make a good editor, she has guided us in publishing a year book that will stand out in our minds as the greatest achievement of our class of '40, Her sincerity, gameness, and devotion under heavy burden, repeatedly lighted the torch which was about to die down. jovial and full of vim, she will always re- main dear to our hearts. MITSUO TANJI Small men are dynamite, so they say, and as for Mitsuo he certainly is a step further than dynamite. As Secretary of our Student Body Government, he has proved beyond reasonable doubt that he is capable, efficient, industrious. Being small Cphysi- callyj doesn't hamper him at all for the biggest job is none too big for him. SURN H0 LEE One could describe Surn Ho as a man of strong character, for as the sheriff of our school, he has done great work in restoring order and respect for laws. His steady de- pendab-ility has won for him many friends, and we, are expecting a great deal from him in the years to come. EmEu.'QEFoQm5Q mwfxuozx N L 233 iiiiigxf Q Y fm QLD ww -s me sim wth.
