Showing Our Pride Class of 1988 Leicester High School Winslow Avenue Leicester, MA 01524 c a4e« tS ride in Academics is taking the class of 88 far! With acceptances at such institutes of higher learning as Parsons School of Design, UVM, UNH, U-Mass, Wheaton, Clark, Worcester State, and University of Michigan. The hard work of Leicester High School students has been rewarded with scholarships from many local and National groups like the Elks, the Mother’s Club and the Womans Club past classes have received as much as $10,000 in scholarships. These clubs take pleasure in supporting the continuation of academic excellence and we take pride in striving towards it! 3 L l ' ■ ■_ SttOVMlHG pRW jVtWe he future is shrouded in mystery. Although soon many of us go our separate ways to many different schools to study many different majors, such as Com¬ munications, Archaeology, Engineering, Biochemis¬ try, Mathematics, Business, Meteorology, Teaching, Medicine, while others will enter Military service or attend Technical or Vocational schools, we must re¬ member that we are the future, the dreams of tomor¬ row. Given the outstanding achievements of our class in the past, there is no question as to the potential and achievements of what’s to come. (VtVw ' ' ' eS O ur spirit and dedication has been shown through¬ out these four years of high school. The many long hours put into the Senior class play — Guys and Dolls, and showing off our industrial arts in the art show, paid off in the end. Experiencing the fun times of Olympic Foolery, Battle of the Faculty, the Patriots, Donkey Basketball, and other events will be treasured memo¬ ries. The romantic nights of the Semi-formal, the Ju¬ nior Prom, The Dinner Dance and many other dances will be remembered. Kassy Messier □ HfflltHCS A 1 . Athletics play an important role in Leicester High. Most students participate in one sport during their four years. Our teams have achieved a wide variety of hon¬ ors and worked their way to Districts, tournaments and League championships. Track, Field Hockey and Baseball played in Districts, Girls Basketball made it to the Centrum, Boys Basketball played in the Clark Tournament. Individuals have been acknowledged as well, T G all stars and Most Valuable Player Awards have been achieved. LHS sports are not lacking in spirit or in willing enthusiastic players and fans. Each year we have impressive wins, which leaves only one thing — Watch out Prouty!! A 1 . JL11 people are unique, and encouraged to develop their own style, talents, and abilities. We take pride in watching and sharing in the growth and success of our peers. It is individuals that make a class special and we wish all happiness and success for the future. Charlene J. Millett T. Mongeau D. Mozer The Growing Years The Underclassmen years go so quickly, at least when we look back a! them. We spent our first whole year in shock trying to adjust. New teachers, complicated schedules and all the different rules we tried to learn were the things that filled the days of a freshmens year. The next year we had the bastes down, all that was lacking was upperclass¬ men status. Only one more year till we got our licences! Just dreaming about our junior year made the days go by. Juniors! Upperclassmen finally, with all the priveleges and bills that go with it. We all tried to get our drivers licence the first time around but some had to go twice. We were so excited until the first insurance payment arrived, be¬ tween that, SAT, and Prom bills we had to get a job! The next fall we tried to decide what to do with the rest of our lives. We filled out forms, prepared resumes, and scholar¬ ships for months. In the mist of oil the chaos many of us wondered how did the time go by so fast and how could I have grown so much in those underclassmen years! For my whole Freshman year, I had Hank Lockwood, Jason Grimshaw and every other Junior and Senior call me Guy Smiley. Thanks Jason. When I was a freshman I was afraid of the upper classmen. They seemed so large and older, and when I walked down the hallway I always felt intimidated. Kim Hodgson Some funny things that happened to me were asking the upper classmen where a room was and they didn ' t have any idea where they were. I can ' t remember being afraid of anything but I can remember something that was sort — of funny. I was waiting for my bus on the first day of school. A bus came by and picked me up. While on the bus, the bus driver asked me what grade I was in. (I was the first one on the bus! I to ld her and she said that this was the memorial school bus. They set up new bus routes and she was early. So, on my first day of school, I was on a different school bus. I was told that the Ala Carte drives up to the front of the building. Kenny Graslie My freshman year was pretty simple, you were either friends with the upper classmen or you just stayed away from them. I suppose my biggest fear was using the bathroom. Yaaa! or It ' s alright! echoed through the empty hallways between classes. I don ' t think there was one freshman who went into the bathroom w out saying either of those words. Lisa Cleary Soph. Freshman year, the second day of school I walked into the senior classroom on accident and Rich Nicholas yelled Hey Sam! you lost??! and the whole class started roaring with laughter. Sam Dagistino National Initiation Day was my worst fear. It didn ' t happen of course, only because of the hazing law ' . I walked into the wrong class twice, I thought I ' d have to carry the school map around with me for the entire year. I realized that the school was a plain square. Fred LaFiash told me to take the elevation that was the teacher ' s room, it would take me to the pool that was the size of the school. Kristie Faucher j. Attain P. Antanavico J. Arguijo M. Being a spaz in Leicester High School plays an important part of everyday life. It is an attitude that is not only fun, but is essential to the scholastic life of a stu¬ dent. It provides the student with relief of stress built up from 2 or more of those never-ending HO-HUM Classes. Once the student has locked both hands together, thrashed them about like a fish out of water, and screamed the most ridiculous sound or phrase possible, he or she can then sanely strut to the next class with a smile and face the wrathful brunt of any 1 hour class. Let us step info this past year of the band and chorus and see what they have been doing. September through November with home football games the band played marches, jazz charts and the LHS fight song. Also in September a student teacher from Anna Ma¬ ria, Ms. Charlotte Hanks, joined to help in conducting and building of their confidence, also she became a cherished friend. In December they started their “Run Out Concerts. The first stop was Worcester St. Hospital, next the Masonic Homes, and on to Faneaul Hall! Several performances that were enjoyed by all was the traveling to the other schools along with the Leicester Association Luncheon for the elder¬ ly. To close the winter season they performed their Christ¬ mas Concert. In January, Leicester proudly sent John Either and Beth Seleke to All District Band. Spring arrived and once again we were buzzing with excitement. It was time to prepare for the Varsity Show. The chorus donned bathing suits, learned notes and memorized the choreographed steps for their beach mix. The band busily worked on a piece known as Sousa. These were presented along with many other individual members by Terry Cox, Lori Millet, Tracy Brown, Kurt Gott, Darren Stec, Kevin Macintosh, John Eithier, Steven Hunt, Adrian Mahan, and others. March was not over for all the members, several still had the Dual County performance; on the 31st these students along with roughly 160 others from 6 other towns, per¬ formed such numbers as Glorie to the Father and Crystal March. In May they performed a joint Spring Concert with the Center School. During this, each member received his her specialized recognition of year pins, letters, and certifi¬ cates. Three of our 1989 graduates will be attending college to further their musical knowledge. John Eithier is on to attend Lowell University, Lina Kobel is heading for Merajerest College, and Adrian Mahan to Jacksonville University, Flor¬ ida. The music department will be without a full time director this coming year. Mr. Stewart Britton has been a wonderful teacher. He organized trips and concerts, and taught them how to match notes. His time and talent will be much missed. Good Luck in the future! Kristin Hartness Rhythm L to R: A. Mahan, D. Koziak, J. Arquijo, K. Macintosh. Not in picture: P. Orsi. Chorus Back Row L to R: K. But it is just as impor¬ tant, if not more, to develop a sense of pride and a true spirit of Sportsmanship. It is the combination of these factors that makes the Mighty Wolverine. The 1987 Fall Field Hockey sea¬ son finally arrived and was greeted with much anticipation and enthusi¬ asm. With 10 of 11 starters back from the previous season, the addi¬ tion of two sophomores, a junior, and a senior to the line-up things were looking up. However, the leadership and desire dictated by the nine seniors and echoed by the underclassmen fell short of the dreams they held. In a conference of seven, where three teams qualified for district play the team fell short. The final record of 5-5-2, a marked improvement from last year, does not begin to indicate the caliber of this great 1987 Wol¬ verine team. Finishing the season with a .500 season, the Leicester Wolverines played better than their record showed. After a successful preseason of conditioning and scrimmages, the team lost its first game to Auburn. Although, losing a few games, the team kept their Wolverine integrity by winning big over Oxford (31-10). Scheduled against tough teams, the Wolverines did as well as could be expected and much better, although they lost to Northbridge and first place South they lost by respectable scores. That was the spark they needed to win four straight games. Finishing with a Bang, Leicester tri¬ umphed over David Prouty, who had a record of 7-1-1 and were victors over Northbridge by taking a 26-3 win in front of the enthusiastic crowd. Thanks to Brosnihan, Popin, Giles, McKay, the D-squad, and the whole spirited team, they were The Best 5 and 5 team in the Nation. Backrow left to right: 15th row) J. Southard, J. Charpentier, F. Overall, it was not a winning season, but in our final game we achieved our first Southern Worces¬ ter County League victory over West Boylston since going varsity in 1985. A winning season? Their season began with so much hope for the future, but all that hope seemed to be taken away in a few weeks time. The team was plagued by many injuries. First Junior Tracey Mayer, sopho¬ more Erin Rzezniekwez, and then senior star Judy Moffat were injured. Everyone thought all was lost, at least everyone but the girls. It seemed after every injury they had to try even harder, and they did. Even though not qualifying for districts, the girls still met yet another goal, coming together as a team. They ended the season on a positive note, the lady Wolverines went to the final round in the Western Worcester County tournament at David Prouty when they were seeded the underdog. They fought back vallorously and finished sec¬ ond, losing only to an exceptionally strong North Brookfield team. Varsity top row: t to R: Cleary, K. Cogswell, K. Ferdella, H. Peterson, T. Along with Dan and Pat, Glen Cunningham and Tim McKay played in districts the team came in a suc¬ cessful 6th out of 10 teams with a score of 365 to end the season. We spent the early part of the evening getting pictures taken and enjoying the balcony. The music was provided by Cross¬ roads, who played a variety of popular songs. Salads, potatoes, rice and several different meats were available at the buffet. Most of the evening was spent on the dance floor and the night flew by. Our last night together was end¬ ed with the fitting theme song Famous Final Scene. FUN IN THE SUN! On a sunny morning in May the senior class of Leicester High School de¬ scended on the Frank Davis Resort in Moodus Conn. We arrived after only one brief roadside stop, full of antici¬ pation and ready to have some fun. We were greeted by our host for the day Cucko who briefly explained the rules of the day. After checking in our bags we scattered across the camp to engage in various activities. Among these were softball, horse¬ shoes, tennis, and horseback riding. Lunch was served in an outdoor pavil- lion and was delicious and plentiful. After lunch, swimming races, canoe races, belly flopping contests, tug of wars, basketball and general fun in the sun were the order of the day. There were so many things going on that you couldn ' t possibly participate in everything that you wanted to. Supper consisted of three styles of chicken served as all you can eat with brownie a ' la mode. As the day drew to a close we put our smiling sunburnt faces on the bus to begin the long drive home. One bus was serenaded by Kurt Gott, and Fason Grimshaw on guitars with vocals by the rest of the passengers. Arriving back at the school at about eight thirty tired and still smiling we looked forward to the rest of our activities for the senior week! “Certainly not a Pain in the Class” On May 31, 1988 at 9:30 AM, LHS Seniors held their Class Day in the gym. Everyone was received well from both the crowd and fellow students, which truly proves that That ' s what Friends are for.” The Class of 1988 Leicester High School Leicester, Massachusetts cordially invites you to attend their Graduation on Wednesday, June 1, 1988 | at seven-thirty o ’clock Mechanics Hall Ma in Street Worcester, Massachusetts t AND IT ALL COMES DOWN TO THIS n June 1st 1988 the Senior Class of Leicester High nervously as¬ sembled for the last time as a group at 7:00 in Mechanic ' s Hall. After the in¬ vocation which was given by Rev. Allen Tadgell Jr. ( David Gooknow rose and welcomed the family and friends who had come to share in our Graduation. David was followed by Jean-Paul Rodrigue, the Class Ora¬ tor. The last of the student speakers was Todd Peloquin, who shared many of his dreams for the future of our class in his Valedictory Address. Many teary eyed members of our group rose and sang That ' s What Friends Are For as our class song. After we all were seated again Dr. Limoges spoke about the many new experiences and responsibilities we would encounter in our future. He then presented the many awards, and scholarships that the students re¬ ceived. Then the big moment arrived The Role Call of Graduates, as Mr. O ' Donnell called our names Mr. Spaulding, a member of the School Committee, presented the diplomas. All that was left was the singing of our school Alma Mater, which was slight¬ ly off tune, but sung from the heart. We left the hall as Nick Narcisi, and Feff Hunt played Concerto for Two Trumpets and the audience ap¬ plauded. We were on our way to a bright new future! The Patriots Game On March 2, 1988, The New England Patri¬ ots came to our school to play a game of Basketball with our faculty and members of the senior class. The teachers started and gave the Patriots a run for their money. With Mr. Chas- ses ' s — Bob Cousey-passes and shooting, Mr. Head ' s graceful lay-ups, Mr. Nelson + Mr. Albro ' s all-around playing, and Coach Lauder ' s enthusiastic rebounding, of course we would keep up. In came the seniors. We did pretty well for ourselves. With Pickett ' s 3 pointer, Spring ' s in- geneous dribbling, Shea ' s outside Shots, and Mahan being caught in traffic” what else could we do but . . . almost win. The Fans were happy and we . . . well, we were happy to get home to bed. After all, we were all missing a pint of blood! What ' s missing from this picture? pjjmois Olympic Foolery Olympic foolery, being played at a later-than usual date this year, turned out pretty much the same as past years, except for 1 stunning surprise. Students competed in the normal proper uniforms (Hawaiian prints, cut-offs, tank-tops, sweats, and even winter hats.) Seniors and Juniors were neck and neck in bal¬ loon races, ping-pong races, and wheelbarrel races. And then the surprise, the Freshman ran away with the tug O ' war title and earned some needed respect. Surprise or no surprise, con¬ gratulations to all for their well earned accom¬ plishments ya, ya, even the sophomores. New waterskiing act in Cypress Gardens ' Just a few more inches fro the Cookie Franny! The Heart of the Arts Design Elemental — an evening with the arts, was one of LHS ' s most successful art shows with works representing not only the art de¬ partment but also the auto, clothing, metals, power mechanics, technical drawing and wood departments. Under brightly colored geometric shapes suspended from the gym and cafeteria ceilings, students set up their creative displays to be viewed by parents and friends. The newly formed L.H.S. drama club presented AHGolden Fleecing, directed by Mrs. Dutton to an appreciative audience. Hysterical per¬ formances by Mary Kane, Adrian Mahan, Jen¬ nifer White, Steven Hunt, Jennifer Martinson, Henry Danis, Steve Gary and Kerry Cogswell made the play a great success. Much thanks must go to Miss Cassenelli for her endless hours of work that make the art show one of the best yet. The students had a great time designing and executing their displays and their efforts were rewarded with a well-orga¬ nized, dynamic show. Jar - i Jr |gff 4 f aMM r w ' M « i mrki S M rnm .
