You are to be congratulated and commended for your outstanding achievements in all areas of your total development. Most of you have sought out the challenges of growing intellec¬ tually, emotionally and socially and have met those challenges with a high degree of success. In¬ dividually and collectively, you have earned the respect and admiration of all of us. Continue to be responsible, respectful, confident and task-com¬ mitted. On behalf of the faculty and staff, best wishes for continued success, good health and lifelong happi¬ ness. Sincerely, James E. O’Donnell Principal TThe dedication of a class yearbook is something which students usually give to those with whom they have had close contact through their high school years. The 1987 Maroon as of this writing has not been dedicated. Howev¬ er, we the class of 1987, feel that it would be negligent it we did not include a special thank you in our yearbook to someone who has greatly influenced the course of our edu¬ cation. For seventeen years of hard work, long hours, dedi¬ cation and caring we would certainly be remiss if we did not extend a heart felt and warm thank you to Doctor Donald Rutter for all that he has done for the Leicester School System, and for us as a class. Thank you Doctor Rutter, and good luck in your future endeavors. The team was led by Captain Kathy O’Donnell and coached by Eileen Donahue who instilled a level of inten¬ sity in each of her players. Each player continued to work and train diligently, uniting to challenge the larger teams of the SWCL, and cre¬ ating tough competition. The second half of the season of¬ fered a couple wins and ties, success anxiously welcomed and much deserved. The 1986 season was not a failure. It created a solid foundation for the 1987 sen¬ iors, juniors, underclassmen, and future Wolverines. It will be remembered as a season where each player achieved a personal toughness and each learned the true definition of intensity. It was also a season which continued the tradition of rainy practices, heavy ma¬ roon sweat-shirts, loud cheers, mental and physical training, and obstacles over¬ come by raw determination. A First Football The Leicester High football team co-captained by Seniors Rob Provost and John Hart¬ nett salvaged a five hundred season by upsetting heavily favored David Prouty on Thanksgiving Day 19-14. On this day there were many fine efforts provided by individ¬ uals such as John Hartnett, Rob Provost, Joe Kane, Mike Kemp, Dan Brosnihan, and Sean Giles. This year’s squad Class Team! was decimated by injuries and as a result was unable to make a charge for the league title. However, despite losing three in a row to much more powerful squads, the Valiant Wolverines rebounded win¬ ning their last three games and finishing with a 5-5 mark. Coach Tom Lauder and his squad should be commended on their fine efforts. An,, , start, coach Bryan Davis got the Leicester Soccer team together and we ended the season with two big wins. In the game against N.D. Fitchburg almost everyone got a chance to score. It was the largest win the Leicester Soccer team ever had. It was amazing to see how hard the whole team worked through prac¬ tices and gam es during the season. Even if the ball didn’t go “our way” in every game, no one gave up. High scores of the year were Donny Polinski and Danny Spring. They both did a great job in every game. Next year will prob¬ ably be even better be¬ cause the team has the experience now and with that the rest will come. It was a great exper¬ ience for me, as an ex¬ change student, to be on the team. I had a great time and made some really good friends. I will never forget how every¬ body gave the ball to me in front of the goal, in our last games so I could score. I finally scored and can bring back to Sweden, the memory of a goal on the soccer team. I wish you all good luck next year and in the future. I know you can do it! by Maria Wedenby D. Fitchburg 3 Another One for the Wall T he boy’s basketball team turned back a disappointing 6-11 record last year having an amazing 18-4 record this season under the leadership of co-captains and 3rd year starters John Hartnett and Steve Johnson. The team went 13-1 in the league, losing only to Graf¬ ton, which earned them the SWCL ti¬ tle for the first time since 1974. Other team accomplishments included Leicester’s trip to the finals in the Clark tournament (losing to Narra- gansett by a sole pt.) and reaching the semi-finals in the District E Division II tournament (bowing to a much stronger St. Bernard’s team) The Leicester High School boy’s team f %JT were also awarded the Cervini-Hardy Sportsmanship Award for their fine sportsmanship throughout the year. Jeff Guinee, Jason Provo, and Dan Spring completed the starting five while teammates Rob Provost, Joe Kane, Jeff Studley, Kevin Pickett, Dan Brosnihan, Don Jubenville and Chris Rutter provided emotional team support, and dedication throughout the season. The memories this team gave will remain in the hearts of the players and the many fans that supported them, for many years to come. They were led by captains Laurie Poirier and Evemarie Brosnihan, and co¬ captain Renee Bates. As well as cheering for the basketball teams, the 12 var¬ sity cheerleaders worked hard to perfect a four-minute tour¬ nament cheer including jumps, stunts, and pyramids. With this they entered the David Prouty Cheerleading Tournament, capturing the fourth place trophy in the Class I small schools division. 70 Bnek row (L to R): K. Cogswell, K. Lyons, S. Berube, S. The season began with competi¬ tion in the Logan Field summer league. It was a tremendous challenge and the Wolverines advanced to the semi-finals. In December, the team started their season by defeating North Brookfield and Auburn for the first time in four years. It was then that the team knew that they were se¬ rious contenders for the league and district playoffs. At the beginning of the season the Wolverines set a goal; Districts. They worked hard during practice and fought for many victories and achieved their goal. Playing on their home court the team defeated Nip- muc easily in the first round competi¬ tion. The Wolverines were then de¬ feated by Tantasqua in the semi-final round of district play at Holy Cross college. Other highlights of the year included Judy Moffat scoring 1,000 points in her Junior year, participa¬ tion by the Wolverines in the Western Worcester county tournament hosted by Ware High school, and finishing second in the Southern Worcester County League. ■OT Back row (L to R): J. Still Another Championship T he year of 1987 saw many ac¬ complishments in many areas by members of Leicester High School. The golf team was no exception and brought the Southern Worcester County championship home to Leicester High. Led by co-captains Dan Brosnihan and Mike Kemp the Wolverines posted an overall record of 8-4-1 and a league record of 7-1-0. The team placed second in the district play offs and were represented in the States. Knowing the numbers were up from last year, they felt they would definitely have a bet¬ ter season. With new head coach, Bob Nelson, and an added incentive of a cookout if they did better than last year, the boys achieved their best re¬ cord in 9 years, 6-3-1. The Wolverines were lead by senior captains Trevor Friend, Rich Grang¬ er, Joe Kane and leading scorer Tim O’Neil. Other seniors were Jeff Hunt, Tony Brown (the weight man), Jeff Guinee, Scott Peterson and Jeff Stud- ley. Some highlights of the ’87’ season were going 4-0 in interhigh competi¬ tion, which included beating a strong Doherty track team. The most excit¬ ing moment had to be a come from behind tie in the last event against a favored Prouty High. It didn’t stop there though. On May 16, Leicester sent 7 participants to the districts, they came home from boasting 7 med¬ als. Two were captured by Co-Captain Tim O’Neil. However, there were some posi¬ tive aspects to the season. The senior squad consisted of Sheri Hobby, Jen¬ nifer Javorski, Andrea Giggey and Sandra Berube. The team was aug¬ mented by a number of Junior, Soph¬ omore and Freshmen players. The freshmen seemed to be the most no- a Future ticeable class and contributed some fine support as they continued to de¬ velop their skills. The team will feel the loss of their senior members when they return to the field in the spring, but with many returning underclass¬ men they are looking forward to fu¬ ture success in their athletic endeav¬ ors. The Wolverines cap¬ tained by John Hartnett, Rob Provost and Steve Johnson also earned a dis¬ trict berth but lost to Quabbin as the Wolverines had lost several players. The Wolverines were led by pitcher Ron Duquette who shouldered the pitcher burden winning nine games. On offense John Hartnett and Steve Johnson led a well balanced attack. Highlights included a 27-16 thrashing of West Boylston to capture the title in which everyone in the line-up had at least one hit. For the many seniors this was the culmination of a very fine year. The inn was beautiful with the colors we had chosen, deep burgundy and pastel pink. Our band, Gallery, did exceptionally well performing and keeping up with our requests. Once everyone had arrived and pictures had been taken, dinner was served. Our menu consisted of fresh fruit cup with sherbert, tossed salad, a choice of Stuffed Chicken Breast or Roast Prime Rib au jus, and to top it all off, the Spencer County Inn Delight for dessert. Later on that evening our royality were chosen by both the band and the waitresses. Our queen was Allison Giroux, and in her court were Laurie Poirier, Sheri Hobby, Kristine Johnston, and Sandra Berube. This year, the class of 87 decided to break tradition by also having a king and court. The King’s Crown went to Christian Paluk, and mem¬ bers of his court were; Michael Kemp, Timothy O’Neil, John Hartnett, and Richard Snelling. All looked spectacular taking their well deserved crowns. As the evening dwindled on, the Inn began to lose many of its couples. Those who remained danced during the final hour and to the last song, our chosen song, “Forever” by Kenny Loggins. Four senior members of the Honor Society, Vice-Presidents Steven Johnson and Claudia Du- puette, Treasurer Mary Newcomer, and Laurie Poirier, led by Society President Joseph Kane, spoke on the qualities sought in the new member¬ ship: scholarship, leadership, charac¬ ter, and service. Other speakers in¬ cluded Mr. O’Donnell and Superin¬ tendent of Schools Dr. Donald Rutter, who presented Claudia Duquette with the National Honor Society Service Award. Finally, new members were inducted with the instructions: “With this torch I give you light; so may you give light to others.” The new officers of the Honor Society were installed as well; instructed in their responsibil¬ ities by Joseph Kane and, lighting their candles from those of the pre¬ vious officers, assumed the responsi¬ bilities of the leaders of the National Honor Society. Instillation of officers (Left to Right): Holly Ivel, Tracy Foley, Joseline Arsenault, Jennifer Martinson, and Darlene Liberty standing in for Lisa Studley. 94 The Leicester High School art show includes visual, dramatic, industrial, and performing arts. It also shows the talents of the home economics, technical draw¬ ing, metals, and architecture classes. The art show, headed by Miss Cassanelli this year, showed displays of the work the students have done throughout the year. The art show was developed 13 years ago and has been a popular event ever since. The students discuss and vote on a central theme to use. All the displays then tie together and present that theme. The students start a few weeks before the show, preparing their pictures and creations for the show. On the day of the show the students construct their pre¬ sentations in their section of the gym. They are then admired by all of the peo¬ ple who come to see the show! 96 PATRIOTS GAME On Feb. 25th 1987, the New England Patriots came to LHS to play a charity game to benefit the Class of 1987 Yearbook. Among those who played for the Patriots were: Ronnie Lippet, Fred Marion, Irving Fryar, Cedreic Jones, Rich Camarillo, Mel Black, Tony Williams, and Ron Wooten. They played a team of High School and Memorial School teachers that included Mr. Chasse, Mr. Albro, Mr. Lauder, Mr. Head, Mr. Dav¬ enport and many others. The Patriots also played a team of senior boys which included Kurt Fauerbach, Tim O’Neil, Mike Kemp, Trevor Friend, and Jeff Hunt. At halftime the Patriot players were very cordial and signed auto¬ graphs for all who wanted them. The games were very interesting and exciting and demonstrated the incredible athletic ability of the Patri¬ ots. For everyone involved it was an extremely satisfying and enjoyable night. Friend after winning A DAY OUT OF THE ORDINARY! The Class of 1987 endured a 2-hour drive to Frank Davis Resort in Moodus, Connecticut ac¬ companied by Mr. Davis, Mrs. Whitney, Ms. Morin, and Mr. Hennessy, for the Senior Class Trip on May 20, 1987. Led by “Coo-Coo”, the resort included such attractions as a swimming pool, miniature golf, shuffleboard, volleyball, basketball, softball, tennis, canoes, and paddle- boats. A few also took advantage of horseback riding nearby. Despite a cloudy beginning, the day became sunny and hot, and a few chose to lay around the pool and enjoy the sunshine. After lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs and french fries, a team from Leicester tried to compete in the canoe races against a team from Blackstone-Millville but didn’t last too long when Candy Allen fell out of the boa boat, due to, she claims the rock¬ ing of Jeff Guinee. However, Trevor Friend was more successful in the swimming races, winning first place in the freestyle races and second in the backstroke. In the afternoon, a disc jockey played dance music in a large hall and some enjoyed an after¬ noon of dancing. In the evening we enjoyed a chicken barbeque for dinner and finally left for home after a long day of fun and friendship. All in all, the day was most enjoyable, and we all have special memories of our Class Trip. 104 Miss Tournas directs another successful play. WHO DO YOU CALL? GHOSTCHASERS A fter many long rehearsals, the curtain opened on the senior class play, Ghostchasers. The play was about the antics in an insane asylum, properly known as Hangtown Asylum For Extremely Tense People. Two neurotic patients stage a suc¬ cessful takeover of the hospital and become the nurse and doctor in charge. Among the other patients are a zombie, an undercover detective, a buglar, a woman who thinks she’s get¬ ting married, Miss Lemming, and Ma¬ dame Mysteria. They are lead by Honcho, who fall fall in love with Har¬ riet Hollyhock, an innocent visitor. The Ghostchasers are hired to cap¬ ture the poltergeist. Meanwhile, the real detective is trying to solve the robbery, two nerdy house-hunters wish to purchase the hospital for their home, and a newspaper woman wants to discredit the Ghostchasers. The Ghostchasers save the hospital from the poltergeist, the real doctor and nurse are once again in charge, and an entertaining evening was en¬ joyed by all participants and a stand¬ ing-room-only crowd at all perfor¬ mances. 106 i STAND BY ME T he Senior Class began gather¬ ing at the Hogan Center for the last time before Gradu¬ ation at 7:00 on the evening of May 26, 1987. Pictures were taken of all the beautiful couples by Casson-Foster, and finally the tables lined up to enjoy a varied buffet of salads, cold meats, lasagna, roast beef, and a table of des¬ serts. After dinner we gravitated to the dance floor to enjoy the music of Down East, including the theme song of the evening, “Stand By Me,” sym¬ bolizing the long-lasting friendships of the Class of 87. Late into the even¬ ing we enjoyed the laughter and fun with our friends until finally the night drew to a close, leaving us with lasting memories of our Senior Dinner Dance. CLASS DAY T he class of 1987 assembled on the floor of the gymnasium before parents, faculty, and the student body of Leicester High School on May 26,1987 to conduct our Class Day activities. All were welcomed by Cl ass Presi¬ dent Renee Bates, and this was fol¬ lowed by the reading of the class His¬ tory, full of reminiscences of our days at Leicester High. The school band played a selection, and departmental and leadership and service awards were presented. The Boy and Girl contributing most to the class were presented to Stephen Johnson and Sheri Hobby, and a scholarship from the class was presented to Tina Snow. The class prophecy was read, pre¬ senting an amusing look at what might happen to the members of the Class of 87 in the future. Class super¬ latives were presented, ranging from Most Mischeivous to Most Congenial, and members of the class left some¬ thing behind to Leicester High in the Class Will. Renee Bates presented the Class Gift, An Activities sign, to Mr. O’Donnell. The class song, “This is the Time”, by Billy Joel, was sung by a group of Seniors, and the yearbook was dedicated to Mr. Normand La- Plante. Finally, after special presentations to retiring Mr. Giddings and Dr. Rut¬ ter and the singing of the Alma Mater, the class proceeded out of the gym, leaving a little of ourselves behind and taking with us our memories of Leicester High School. It was May 27, 1987, and the Clas s of 1987 gathered at Mechanics Hall in Wash¬ burn Hall, nervously a-fixing caps to our heads and arranging our gowns. At last, we lined up in our carefully rehearsed order and processed sol¬ emnly to the familiar tune of Pomp and Circumstance into Mechanics Hall where faculty, friends, and rela¬ tives awaited the Commencement of the Class of 1987. The Class listened intently to speeches about our years at Leicester High, and the future that awaits each of us, by Salutatorian Joseph Kane, Class Orator Stephen Johnson, and Valedictorian Mary Newcomer. Scholarships and Awards were pre¬ sented by Dr. Donald Rutter, and fi¬ nally, amid great excitement and pride, the members of the Class of 1987 received their diplomas from School Committee Chairman Mr. Da¬ vid Mero. After congratulations by Mr. James O’Donnell, the Class of 1987 march out of Mechanics Hall to Vivaldi’s “Concerto for Two Trum¬ pets” played by Nicola Narcissi and graduate Jeffrey Hunt. Somewhat saddened at leaving Leicester High, but excited at facing the different fu¬ tures awaiting us, which we have all been prepared for by our years at Leicester High School, we became proud alumni of Leicester High School. 113 ( —J(z£.‘ ( 2 [an of 1987 JleLcexteX cdfiqfl cfioo[ Jleicextex, oA [axxac(iuxettx co xdiaUy inoitex you to attend tfieix ( 3 xaduatLon on 1 Vednexdaq, ccA {ay 27, 1987 at xeoen-tnixtu o ctock cMecnanLcx MC M ain StX££.t ( Woxcextex, cAi axi.acfiui.etti. SPORTS BANQUET O n Wednesday May 20th the an¬ nual sports banquet was held. Although awards were pre¬ sented to everyone who participated in athletics the night belonged to the sen¬ iors. For them it was the culmination of a very successful year. Also, this night would provide many special memories for many. Tim O’Neil and Sheri Hobby were the boy and girl contributing most to athletics while Joe Kane and Mary Newcomer received the student athlete award. Finally, for the first time in the award’s history the Wolverine of the Year was presented to three deserving individuals: John Hartnett, Kathy O’Donnell, and Steve Johnson. As we look back we will cherish the memories provided by this night. Yearbook Staff I would like to take this op¬ portunity to thank the members of the yearbook staff for their hard work and dedication which have made possible the excellent year¬ book which you now hold in your hands. Although the names are too numerous to mention, there are many peo¬ ple not pictured on this page who have contributed some way to this yearbook in terms of time, advertising, artwork, and ideas. A yearbook should be a reflection of the class that it represents and this one is surely “First Class”. It has been a pleasure and a privi¬ lege to work with each other and every one of you.
