MU«WMW SWTH tit 4 M GMm If ' 9X6 Leicester High School Winslow Ave Leicester, MA 01524 To The Class Of 1986 You are to be commended and congratulated for your outstanding achievements. Most of you have been inspired by an urgent need to accept the responsibility of developing emotionally, socially and intellectually. May your actions and activities reflect feelings of self-worth and confidence. Invest yourself in worthy thoughts that lead to peace. Give in harmony and see others in their beauty and dignity. See everyone in the light of their worthiness. Contemplate yourself as an infinite possibility, grasp and develop the new and better ideas that flow through your thinking. You have gained knowledge, experience, maturity and respect. On behalf of the faculty and staff, best wishes for continued success, good health and lifelong happiness. 1 OUR DEDICATION TO: W e, the class of 1986 dedicate the Maroon yearbook to two special beneficial mem¬ bers of our faculty, Mr. Robert Giddings, and Mr. Richard Hennessy. These are two fine individuals who display dedication and concern to all who need their help. They not only are our teachers, but they are our friends and show that they care not only about us, but about our lives. When they are faced with what seems like impossible situations, they strive to achieve their goal, while helping us with our prob¬ lems. The senior class would like to thank Mr. Hennessy and Mr. Giddings for all they have done for us. It is both an honor and a pleasure to dedicate this yearbook to them. We wish them the best of luck and happiness in the years to come. Love, The Class of 1986 THE YEARBOOK STAFF TOP ROW L. TO R. B. COS¬ TELLO, A. PARTENHEIMER, P. VERICK, T. NAVAROLI, K. BARRY. MIDDLE ROW L. TO R. C. WILSON, K. MCNA¬ MARA, M. JACQUES, K. FITZGERALD, C. SPRING, J. RODRIQUE, P. VERICK, C. ALLEN. SITTING S. BERRY¬ MAN. 3 WE REMEMBER: T he class of 1986 experienced tragic losses on both a personal and a national level. We be¬ gan our senior year with the loss of a fellow student, athlete, and friend, Thomas Arguijo. He was a person that always had a smile and was always willing to help. We also suffered the loss of a recent alumni, Katherine Hartnett. She was an outstanding history scholar, a National Honor Society member, as well as a person with a charming and warm personality. We mourned with the nation the loss of the crew of the space shuttle. The Challenger. Many of us huddled together in the school library to receive that fateful news on a day that is etched into all of our memories. These people have touched our lives in a way which we will always remember. Memories of these people will always be in our hearts as well as in our minds. 4 DR. RUTTER SUPERINTENDANT OF SCHOOLS MR. Though time has taken away that night, it will not be forgotten. A Day in rhe Life of .. A day in the life of ... a town official. Each year the school holds a mock election to show students what they have to do to be elected to an official position. First, each person wishing to partici¬ pate must obtain nomination sheet on which they must get twenty signatures to be nominated for any position. Then, the nominations are voted upon and on a designated day, each student participating meets with a town official to see what their job involves. By having local government day, stu¬ dents are given the opportunity to par¬ ticipate in town government and to give them a taste of what politics is all about. After an informative day with their re¬ spective officials, students and their parents attended a dinner which was followed by a mock meeting in the town hall. Articles of debate were argued among students and then they had the chance to vote on them. At the finish, Norm Soucie, town moderator, closed the meeting, and everyone departed with a sense of accomplishment and pride in their town. 49 WINTER CARNIVAL WEEK And the bid is up to? the wheel barrel race, the ping pong roll, and the tennis ball pass. However, the seniors de¬ termination and enthusiasm allowed them to dominate the tug-of-war event and in¬ evitably capture the first place title. February 10-13 was a fun- filled competitive week. The winners of the individual days were: Leicester Spirit Day, Juniors; Dress Up Day, Freshman, and Horray for USA Day , Freshman. Everyone took their places, made a final prop check, and anticipated the drawing of the cur¬ tains with a deep breath. This was it, the long await¬ ed moment, and that final instant of near panic when you seem to have forgotten all your lines. We were all in it together though, each knew each others lines, and we were ready! Oooh . .. what hit me? . . . and so began the sen¬ ior class play with a line that assisted the conclu¬ sion of a previous movie, and was but a prelude to the actual Hurricane Smith. With the line, ' Mr. Diamond? ' , Hurricane Smith began to unfold as a story within a story. We acted through our ner¬ vousness, developing our characters and unfolding the plot. The lines were al¬ most second nature as we spoke them before our unsuspecting audi¬ ence. Miss Calcutta and Dr. Londonbridge saved the explorers club, Java- Java braved the villians. Hurricane Smith and Linda Zest proved that the gar¬ den of the golden mon¬ key was real, and Gloria sold her film to Eddie. The donkey ' s quality of behavior also declined as the now ill-tempered donkey became less and less man¬ ageable. In the end though, the Me¬ morial School teachers came out on top. As cream rises to the top, so did the teachers defeating the High School teachers and finally th e Sen¬ ior Squad. Through it all, the bumps and bruises didn ' t matter anymore, because smiles were on everyone ' s face. As the cry of Whoa Nellie exploded through the gym, the goal of getting the ball through the basket became secondary. The goal of not getting knocked off the don¬ key became first and fore¬ most to everyone. The three teams of seniors, juniors, and teachers battled each other, and embarrass¬ ment into the long night. As the crowd cheered for their favorite participant, the combatants cheered their donkey to do their thing. The spotlight may have become too much for the donkeys as their sudden stops spilled 54 FIELD HOCKEY The 1985 Wolverine field hockey team, coached by Eileen Donahue, finished their season with a record of 5-6-4. The team, led by Sen¬ ior co-captains Maureen Gallagher and Charlene Spring, stuck together al¬ though the wins were few. Despite the size of the team, which consisted of only twelve individuals, the team still remained strong and dedicated. The Leicester girls came within two games of making Districts, and end¬ ed their season with a strong third place in the Southern Worcester County League. It was a year of personal triumph as well as anguish. Small numbers, and crippling injuries to both teams, hurt their competi¬ tiveness. Rich Granger and Trevor Friend, co-captains of the boys team, were un¬ able to compete because of injuries. Kathy O ' Donnell and Chris McGrail, co-cap¬ tains for the girls team, tried hard to lead their small girls team to victory. Personal re¬ cords as well as school re¬ cords fell during the season. Kelly Lyons, and Brenda La- joie broke the school records in the javelin and the mile re¬ spectively. Tim O ' Neil, Joe Kane, Jennifer White, and Kris Peterson had their suc¬ cess on the track. Mike Dick¬ enson, Betty Burtt, Jason Feldman and Jeff Guiney had personal bests in their field events. The first half of the season wasn ' t very prosperous for the team. However, the playing and experience im¬ proved. The two co-captains of the team were Kristen Mes¬ sier, a very responsible and versatile player who was there whenever you need¬ ed her, and Donna Hodger- ney, who led the team in tri¬ ples, had the second best batting average and was a very strong, smart base run¬ ner. All members were dressed in long maroon robes, each having been chosen for the qualities of scholarship, lead¬ ership, service, and charac¬ ter. Each quality was defined and described by 2nd and 3rd year members, each speech a prelude to our guest speaker, an alumnus of Leicester High — Robert Kennedy. Those who had already been inducted into the Hon¬ or Society were given their respective year pins, and the induction of the 1986 candidates followed, each being presented with a cer¬ tificate, membership card, and a year pin, as custom¬ ary for all new members. Each inductee was present¬ ed with a candle as well, lit as these words were spoken by the president of Leicester SERVICE High ' s chapter of the Nation¬ al Honor Society, Patricia Newcomer: As this candle gives light to you, so may you give light to others. The new members, with candles in hand, recited their pledge, and thus the formal ceremony concluded. A reception in the school cafeteria followed during which the new members were congratulated and re¬ freshments were served. L (_Z U4. As the couples arrived arm in arm, they waited nervous¬ ly in an extensive line to have their pictures taken by Cas- son 8c Foster. As the line dwindled, there was another one formed in front of the large buffet, which was of great variety. The couples sat down to large platefulls of salads, roastbeef, turkey, and meatballs. The meal was very enjoyable, obvious by those who stood in line a number of times! Down East performed wonderfully for the LHS stu¬ dents as the first beat of the drum was their cue to es¬ cape from their tables and move on to the dance floor for a wild night of dancing. The floor was definitely the place to be as soon as the band performed the theme song The Greatest Love of All . The couples became very intimate as they lis¬ tened intently to the words of this beautiful melody. As this unforgettable evening drew to a close, the crowd diminished, so as to leave merely four couples on the dance floor, to repre¬ sent the grateful and mem¬ ory-filled 1986 Leicester High School Seniors. The Grearesr Nighr of All Zli?86 For three years we had watched other graduating classes proceed through their class day activities, never truly real¬ izing what a special, emotional day it was for the gradu¬ ates. But this year the 1986 class day activities were ours, and we were the graduating class. And as the other classes looked on, as we had always done, we realized the emotions that lie behind the words — Class Day. May 21, 1986, was the last day before graduation for us seniors to be together as a class, and as we sat in our designated seats in front of the stage, wearing our caps and gowns, we were exactly that — a class. All cliques were dispersed, all hard-feelings tossed aside and we sat together as classmates, sharing the last moments as sen¬ iors. We proceeded into the gym to the tune of “Pomp and Circumstance”, the welcome address was given and the class prophecy was read subsequently. The presentation of the department awards was next, followed by the pre¬ sentation of the National Honor Society Awards, Junior League Service Award, and the Leadership and Service Award, after which the Boy and Girl Contributing Most to the Class of 1986 were honored, When the awards were given out we clapped not only for our special friends but for all of our classmates. hOBUflflttBtt ;n GiUuB 8 a a stl ' MWmUI UUUMi 102 F: ' lip : ‘ A DAY TO REMEMBER On May 12,1986, two bus¬ loads of seniors, accompa¬ nied by Mr. Hennessy, Mr. Ayotte, Miss O ' Neil and Mrs. O ' Connor, journeyed to Frank Davis Resort in Moo- dus, Connecticut. Leaving LHS in warm sunshine, we ar¬ rived some two hours later (after several pit stops!!) amid cool cloudiness. Nev¬ ertheless, a strong determi¬ nation to have a fantastic time conquered all, and the day was one of fun and laughter, scattered sunshine and many memories. We were greeted by a man called Cuckoo, our host for the day, and received a warm welcome and intro¬ duction to the resort. The class split up in different di¬ rections in order to join the activities in which they wished to participate. These included; boating, canoe¬ ing, horseback riding, soft- ball, basketball, volleyball and swimming. At high noon we enjoyed a cook-out with plenty of hamburgers and hotdogs. This was followed by several swim competi¬ tions in frigid waters. Other competitions were held throughout the day be¬ tween LHS seniors and two other New England schools, and as usual, the Wolverines were successful. However, we did find that since our guys were the only ones at the resort, they were often borrowed for various team games. A disc jockey provided top-40 songs in the afternoon, and many of us could be seen on the large dance floor strutting our stuff . A huge chicken barbeque served as our dinner, and ice cream sandwiches as des¬ sert. Conversation and laughter complemented the meal. We departed an hour later, after a truly enjoyable day, tuckered out from a great time with our friends. It was a trip that will live the memories of Seniors forever. 104 , Congratulations To the Graduating Seniors Class of 1986 AN ENDING ... A NEW BEGINNING We assembled in Washburn Hall, nervous¬ ly adjusting caps, amazed that the long awaited moment was here. The female graduates were each given a single, long- stem red rose, and we were arranged sin¬ gle-file, alternating boy and girl graduates, forming a long succession of maroon and white. As we mounted the stairs to begin our parade down Mechanics Hall to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance ' ' , final adjust¬ ments were made and we hugged for the last time as seniors for we were about to become graduates. And as we stood their on those stairs, we realized this was no long¬ er a rehearsal, but the actual event — this, May 22, 1986 was our graduation. We flawlessly filed onto the stage re¬ mained standing through the national an¬ them and invocation. The salutatory ad¬ dress was made by Tom South wick, our class orator, Dan Avedikian gave his ad¬ dress which was then followed by that of our valedictorian, Patti Newcomer, The class then sang the class song The Great¬ est Love of AH , perhaps not flawlessly but as a class. After this the scholarship recipi¬ ents were awarded with comments by Dr, Rutter and Mr. O ' Donnell. Then came that which fulfilled the culmi¬ nation of our four years at Leicester High School — the presentation of diplomas. We accepted our diplomas with our left hand, shook hands with our right, and be¬ came graduates. We went through these motions row by row and when the last gra¬ duate had received a diploma, we stood together to sing our alma mater. The bene¬ diction and recessional followed. Leaving the stage with diploma in hand to Wash¬ burn Hall we assembled for the last time as a class. As freshman we never would have be¬ lieved how fast the time would pass, but there we were, graduates four years later, four years older, and four years wiser. 107 The Class of 1986 Leicester High School Leicester ; Massachusetts cordially invites you to attend their Graduation on Thursday May 22, 1986 at seven thirty o ' clock Mechanics Hall Main Street Worcester, Massachusetts 108 ARTISTIC VISIONS The Leicester High School Art Show is a combination of visual, dramatic, industrial, and performing arts. Home economics, technical drawing, metals, and ar¬ chitecture are also included. The Art Department, headed by Ms. Hurst, presents an annual Art Show where students display projects that they created dur¬ ing that year. The Art Show began 12 years ago under the direc¬ tion of Ms. Hurst. A central theme is discussed and vot¬ ed on by all the students. Each person ' s display incor¬ porates the general theme, tying all the works of art together. A few weeks before the actual show, students mount their pictures, make their display signs, and work on their theme decorations. As time grows near, anxi¬ ety mounts and last minute details are taken care of. The day of the Art Show students construct their display presentations in the gymnasium and cafe. The displays are admired by everyone and the Art Show goes over quite well. All in all, the annual Art Show is a chance for young artists to STRUT THEIR STUFF!!! 112 HUB MATH TEAM Tri-captains sitting: P. Newcomer L to R: T. Navaroli, D.
