Leveillee Industrial Arts ■SH SENIOR CLASS HISTORY It was early one September morning in 1979 when over one hundred new freshmen entered Leicester High School en route to four years holding many new and exciting experiences. Homerooms were found, and lockers and schedules assigned. Most stu¬ dents were shy, but eager to begin this new school year. Mr. Lamarche had undertaken the task of advising our class. As freshmen we needed to elect officers which would get us off to a well-founded start. Sue Ayotte became our first President; Dawn LeBlanc our Vice-President; our secretary was Debbie Johnson and the treasurer was Karen Lavigne. Our officers set ten dollars as the dues for freshman year, and began valiant efforts to find fundraisers which would yield large profits. After a great deal of debating we decided to sell placemats and candles. Sales of these items were profitable, but as enthusiastic and ambitious freshmen we wanted to increase our treasury with one more money-maker before the end of the year. We chose a car wash. This event was a success. But when more students were being washed than cars they were asked to leave the Fire Station. As far as sports went for the 79-80 season, the girl’s field hockey team finished their season with a 5-5-4 record. The football, as well as cross country team each had a .500 season. Our football team lost the Thanksgiv¬ ing Day game to David Prouty High School. The strong girl’s basketball team, with Kim.and Kelley Gallagher as members, went as far as the playoffs in the districts where they lost to North Brookfield. The boy’s basketball team ended their season with a losing record. One of the high points of our freshman year had to be the Olympic Foolery games. Our boys battled to the bitter end and defeated the big, strong, muscular Junior boys in the tug of war. We really did a good job considering we had to pull people from the bleachers to participate. Mr. Rochette retired from Leicester High School in June of this year. As sophomores, we entered the high school in September of 1980 a little more confident than the year before. We began this year with a fresh group of officers. Kelley Gallagher took over the position of President; Darleen O’Neil became the new Vice-President; our treasurer was Carol Casello and Lisa Carkin was the Secretary. Mr. Lamarche returned for another year as our class advisor. Mr. Hubacz joined our faculty as a new science teacher. This year our fund-raisers consisted of carnation sales and our volleyball marathon. There were ten hours of volleyball playing, if you could call it that. Once again, for the most part, things went well except for the broken toilet in the boys’ locker room, but don’t all activities have their little problems? Evidently, Mr. Lamarche didn’t think so! Plans began to be made for our sophomore class trip and a decision was made. In June of 1981, the class of 83 headed to Paragon Park for a full day at the amusement park and the beach. Our Junior Prom committee was elected with Darleen O’Neil as Chairperson. Due to the cutbacks in the budget, Mr. Lamarche had to leave us and Mrs. Dunlop helped us begin our search for a Junior Prom site. We became the class without an advisor. With only a few weeks remaining in the school year. Ms. Tournas took over as our new class advisor and we finalized our arrangements to hold our Prom at the Sheraton Tara in Fra¬ mingham. In sports that year our field hockey team had a 7-4-4 record. The football team had a 5-5 record and for the second year in a row lost the Turkey Day game. Girl’s and boy’s basketball failed to make the districts. But in the spring, the softball team made the districts and lost to Hopedale, ending their season. Yes, 1981 was the year the bombs took over at Leicester High School. One realistic looking bomb was discovered in the boys’ bathroom. After a short wait and close examination by an expert from Fort Devens, the bomb was discovered to be play dough, the same kind used by Mac while watching Romper Room. That spring we said good-bye to Mr. Toepfer and hello to Mr. O’Donnell. Also, leaving us in 1981 were Mr. Lindsey, Mr. Hair, and Mr. Hubacz. Proposition 2 x z took a toll on all of us that year. In September of 1981, the class of 1983 walked through the doors of Leicester High School, finally, as upperclassmen. Mr. Kourey, Mr. Hennes- sy, and Miss McGrail had joined us as new teachers and we also had a few new officers. Kelley Gallagher returned as President; Darleen O’Neil began her second year as Vice-President; Gayle Brigham took over the treasurer’s position and Melissa Lockwood became our new secretary. Plans, plans, and more plans! The Junior Prom was coming closer and we needed to find a band. Our Prom committee eventually chose a band whose music was much better than it’s name, Harmony Hall. Yes, we had a band and yes, we had a location, but one thing was missing, money. The class of 83 needed something which would yield large sums of money and once again our officers and advisor put their heads together and came up with the idea of a bike marathon. Ah, yes, a nice ten mile bike ride through the back roads of Leicester on a beautiful, sunny day would have been an ideal event. But once again, every activity has its little problems. It was a cool, cloudy morning in October when approximately thirty students met at the high school in hopes of getting through the ten mile route before the rain began to fall. No more than fifteen minutes after the bikes were in motion the rains came. Ms. Tournas was right there though, right there in her car waiting for everyone to check in. All who participated did enjoy themselves and the class did take in a good amount of money. Other money makers were the sales of posters, novelties, swishies and lollypops. This year in sports the field hockey team ended their season with a 8-3-1 record. The football team left many of us with a question in our minds. Will we ever win another Thanksgiving Day game? The girl’s basketball team 104 ended their season with a loss to Douglas in the District quarterfinals, but had an impressive 15-2 record. They also won the Southern Worcester County League. The boy’s basketball team was in the Clark Tournament and Districts and ended their season with a 12-6 record. Mr. Hippert left us in December of this year. Before we knew it May 14th was upon us and some forty-six couples were traveling out to Framingham en route to the Sheraton Tara where the 1982 Junior Prom was held. Our theme song was “IF’ and chosen Prom Queen was Sue Ayotte. Her court included Karen Fyrbeck, Debbie Stuart, Doreen Law, and Bea Lindsey. Excluding the meal our Prom was a complete success. Along with the Prom, the 1981-82 year consisted of its usual bomb scares and lunch price hikes. Remember when lunches cost 30q? 40c? 50c? 70c? As our Junior year came to an end, so our plans for the coming year began. We were the class that was determined to be different. We received a reluctant o.k. from the school committee on our class trip destination, Walt Disney World in Florida. We also began planning the other Senior activities, Senior Dinner Dance, Graduation, ect . .. In June we said goodbye to Mr. McKay and Mrs. Avedian. We took our last final exams of our high school careers and left school in hopes of a super summer and in anticipation of returning in the fall as the dominant force in school. Finally, September 1982 rolled around and we, the Class of 83 embarked on a year we hoped would be memorable and exciting. Melissa Lockwood moved into the position of President; Darleen O’Neil was elected Vice- President for her third year; Gayle Brigham began her second year as Treasurer and Lisa Carkin was reinstated as Secretary. Joining us as new faculty members were Mrs. Rice, Ms. Moran, Mrs. O’Connor, and Mr. (music) Davis. Mr. Lamarche returned to see the Seniors through their last year, and Ms. Toumas loved us so much that she became our class advisor for our final year. We started off the year with a good deed called “adopt a freshman” Practically every member of the Senior class signed up and was assigned to one or two freshmen. This was supposed to make the freshmen feel welcome and went over pretty well. Our main money maker was candy sales, but we were destined to be the class which did things differently and set out to find something different. AND WE DID! Donkey Basketball would be coming to the high school in April and students, as well as teachers were anxiously awaiting. During the 1982-83 season our girls’ and boys’ teams did very well. The field hockey team made it to district playoffs, ending their season with a 10-1-4 record. The football team . . . well, tried desperately one last time to beat David Prouty on Thanksgiving Day and failed. But Tony Mott was named Defensive player of the game. Darleen O’Neil was chosen the 1982 Homecoming Queen and her court included Melissa Lockwood, Kelley Gallagher, Sue Ayotte, and Sue Peters. In girl’s basketball, the Eye of the Tiger brought the team to the top. They came in first place in the Southern Worcester County League and became the District 111 Division E champions. Kim Gallagher became the first girl to score over 1000 points in her high school career. The boy’s basketball team also proved themselves worthy of a position in the Clark Tournament and made it to the semi-finals in the Districts. For the boys Bob Williams scored over 1000 points in his career. Our class won the Olympic Foolery games this year and the Winter carnival Queens were chosen. Kelley Gallagher represented our class with Sue Peters and Patty Scully as members of the court. The Senior Class Play quickly got underway. Actors and actresses began learning their lines and the stage crew began designing the set. After many hours of rehearsing. The Wizard of Oz was ready to be performed on December 9th. The question was, were we about to be snowed in? Luckily, the snow didn’t totally ruin the attendance and the show was a success with young and old alike. Another performance which brought additional funds into our treasury was the musical Godspell put on by Ms. Tournas’s group, to benefit us. Thanks again to Ms. Toumas for a terrific job. In December, we said goodbye to Mr. Tivnan and hello to Mr. Ottoson. Last efforts were being made to raise money. We sold suncatchers and Easter novelties. Our final fund raiser was on April 5th. On this day, the donkeys finally came to Leicester High and a show was put on in the gym that night. Yes, they were playing basketball . . . or trying to. Teachers along with students enjoyed riding the donkeys and a good time was had by all. That did it! No more selling! All were thankful for that. Now our concentrations were focused on the long awaited class trip. A group of 39 students and 5 chaperones met outside the doors of Leicester High school at 6:30 on the morning of April 19th in fear that we might not be taking off at Logan airport as scheduled. Yes, the snow was determined to keep us at home, but not one of us would give in and we did finally take off. This was the trip to remember! Everything rested on our shoulders, since we were the first to undertake such a venture. All went well and we spent four glorious days in beautiful Florida sunshine. Back in school after April vacation our thoughts travelled to happy days of the Dinner Dance and graduation. Our plans were set for a May 26th Dinner Dance at the Sheraton Lincoln with the band Chimera. Our mugs were ordered and our theme for the dance as well as class day and graduation would be “Time in a Bottle”. Arrange¬ ments for class day and graduation were being completed and the illustrious day was drawing near. Memories of these days will remain close to our hearts and forever in our minds. There is just one more section to this history though. We can’t forget the traditional “Do you remembers”. So here goes: Do you remember: our hike up Mount Manadnock? the Million Dollar question? the Iranian bomb scare? the explosion in Chemistry class? when the court yard doors were open? the first day of school? bomb scares? Steve Ramn’s Halloween costume, half man, half woman? the pigs in Bio II? when the gym roof leaked? Reke’s famous football speech? Melinda’s bee sting? Mrs. Murphey’s Accounting class? 6th period? surprise parties? class rings? waiting for Kim at the Deli before the Sophomore class trip? the belly dancer? before a la carte? the Toga party? flying report cards? Lisa’s get togethers? the Kill Brothers? Tracy Ryan’s 1:10 announcements? paying for the class trip? the exchange students? Paul Bush, Carol Casello, Carl Sylvester, Brian Hebert, Mike Hebert, Darlene McClure, Dawn LeBlanc, Erica Bergeron, Dan Moughan, Andy Moore, Bob White, Alan Barms, Jay Hurley, Timmy Dawe, Lee Thomas, Nicole Laute, Karen Wiggins, Dave Neskie, David Lemieux, Paul Dandro, Chris Ewing-chow, Sean Foley, Debbie LaFlash, Tam¬ my Allen, Kathy Lindsey, Suzanne Jackson, Charles Clemmey, Gary Estey, and Chucky Martin? Yes, many students have come and gone, but our remembrance of these people will remain with us forever. Now that we, the class of 83, are about to leave this school, we must realize that the experiences which have led up to graduation are just as important as graduation itself. By going into another segment of our lives, we are taking with us all that has made us what we are today. 105 fcBjBWWWl Yearbook Dedication We the Senior Class of 1983 wish to dedicate our Yearbook to Miss Tournas and Mr. Tivnan. We are richer for having known Miss Tournas, our advisor. She has taught us through example. Unselfishly she worked for benefit. Her wit and talents help her to gracefully weather any situation. Not only do we think of Miss Tournas as a teacher and counselor, but also as a friend. She always treated us as special adults, with feeling, understanding and patience. Mr. Tivnan has set a style for each of us to follow. A mild manner and infinite patience characterized T, who willingly gives of himself. He is deeply concerned with the well being of each of his students. He’s always ready with a helping hand and an open ear. We co-deaicate our yearbook to a most caring and deserving individual.
