LEICESTER HIGH SCHOOL MAROON STAFF WELCOMES YOU TO THE 1980 s DEDICA TION Nowadays it seems difficult to find someone who genuinely cares about people. The class of 1980 has been lucky enough to find such a per¬ son. Over the past two years, this woman has been our advisor, but more importantly, she has been our friend. She has given unselfishly of her time, abilities, and efforts. She has made the time we’ve spent at Leicester High more rewarding and enjoyable. It is because of this person that we have reached the many goals that we set for ourselves. We the Senior Class of 1980 wish to dedicate this, our Yearbook to Mrs. Dunlop. In these four years, we had the pleasure of having the students on this page in our class. They brought much happiness and excitement to L.H.S. In some way, each of these students touched us. We did not like to see them leave, but time must move on, and so do we. The Class of 1980 dedicates this page to the former students of our class, and would like to wish each and every one of them success and happiness in the years to come. Jim Trov L nn Gordon Heidi Bush CLASS HISTOR Y Steve Soeha It was September 8. 1976, a day that will live in infamy, for that was when ue. today ' s seniors, made our less than inconspicuous entrance into the hal¬ lowed halls of Leicester High. Hesitantly our huddled masses were pushed off the buses and went about the task of finding out where our assigned homerooms were. We elected Ted Friend as President, Karen Lueier as Vice-President, Mike Shea as Treasurer, and last but not least Lynn Gordon for Secretary. Our advisor was Mr. B. As freshmen we encountered many novel problems. For instance restrooms were unmarked and there was the constant job of bringing up travs for the upperclassmen. We also became quite adept at making up excuses for being late. The old excuse I don t know my way around was quickly replaced by I forgot my schedule or I didn t know Earth science wasn ' t supposed to have three breaks. Ah. breaks! Those were the davs when break was held in the courtyard, when throwing choke cherries, catching a buzz, and getting caught on the roof retrieving frisbees were common place. This was also the first year we had to accumulate money for a treasury and start to pay dues. Our first money-making endeavor was a car wash. Despite the fact we were faced with near-freezing temperatures and occa¬ sional snow flurries, we escaped without frostbite and even made a few bucks. We followed this up with a bake sale, a fall clean-up, and yes, another carwash. In the autumn, our athletic teams had a fairly good season. Field Hockey had a respectable 5-6-1 record, the cross country team ran to an 8-6-1 sea¬ son. and our football team was dealt their first loss ever to David Prouty en route to a 2-7-1 performance. In the winter Leicester produced its most awe¬ some girls ' basketball team ever, their determination and tenacity enabled them to become District III Division 2 Champions. The boys ' team didn’t qui t ' match the girls but they still performed admirably . In the spring we had the addition of the tennis club, which preceded the tenni team. Our athletic squads took to the fields with new enthusiasm, the girls ' softball team advanced to the districts, the golf team lost the Southern Worcester County League title to Millbury by only one point, baseball had a winning season, and track a ty pica I one. e also had the addition of the Lei¬ cester High annual Wolverine Tennis Classic, which was won by Mr. Buck- lev of Memorial School. Unlike the tennis classic however, we returned for a second year. With our freshman year fixed in our memory, we proceeded to our Sopho¬ more vear with an air of indifference. In fact, this feeling was shared by all classes following a most beautiful summer, long-awaited throughout our term as freshmen. This feeling was soon left behind as the sophomore class with the added prestige of no longer being freshman quickly shifted into gear. Officers meetings in Room 14 consisted of Steve Soeha — President, Karen Lueier ice-President, Lvnn Gordon — Secretary, and Kellv McKay — Trea¬ surer. Class activ ities got off to a slow start as the officers attempted to organize a plaii of action. How can we make money? Let s sell iron-ons!!! M hat a mis¬ take. Even as we readv ourselves to leave L.H.S. we realize we will never be forgotten due to the fact that L.H.S. iron-ons are still on sab at the school store. And for that matter, they probably alway s will. Turning to a happier note, who could ever forget dissecting in biology, travelling through India in W orld Cultures, and the fact that this was our last vear of health class. We dreamed of Driver ' s Ed. Junior Proms, and rock concerts which all seemed so far away. The only hope we had to enjoy our sophomore vear was to make use of our limited authority over the incoming freshman. Fall sports started quickly and soon Turkey day was here. This monumen¬ tal dav followed an up and down season for all fall sports. Who could forget the cold November day at Community Field when the Panthers of David Prouty met the home team Wolverines, the result; a 16-0 shutout, a welcome revenge after last year s loss. The winter of the 19 1 (- 8 school year was filled with school activities. Who can forget Mr. Hippert, Mr. Albro and several others who reminisced on 50 ' s dav? A day of bobby socks, leather jackets, and slicked back DA s. The vear flew swiftly by as the holiday season made its approach. Our annual Christmas assembly was a smash hit or should we say smashed hit as Uncles Lush and Mush hiccupped their way into Christmas history in our class skit. Little did we know that we would soon have an unscheduled vacation. During the Winter Carnival Week it struck. The Blizzard of ' 78 dumped two to three foot of snow on the entire Northeast, schools were closed for the week beginning February 7, 19(8. Indeed this was a historical event that we shall always remember. Someday we can tell our children (or maybe our pupils) how horrible w inters were w hen we were kids. The girls ' basketball team refused to be overshadowed by such an event. Thev once again made it to the districts only to be defeated in their second game. The bovs basketball team continued its fearless play in a strong Southern Worcester County League. As winter was coming to a close we sophomores went on the money trail. A concert held in the L.H.S. gy mnasium featured East Coast Sound and their incredible sound system as they sounded out disco hits? Then came the advent of spring. And what does spring bring? Car washes of course. History was made as we combined a car wash and bake sale which took place at the Rochdale Fire Barn and the American Legion in Cherry Valley . Car wash earning records were shattered as we eclipsed the 300 dol¬ lar barrier and shot up near $350. Remember the water fights? Spring sports soon followed. Once again the L.H.S. girls made all the big news as the softball and newly formed tennis team to the Districts. Baseball, track and bovs tennis all had average seasons with several players from the track team and one student from the tennis team getting a shot at the Dis¬ tricts. In addition, the golf team had a tremendous year with only one league loss. As our sophomore vear came to a close we all became excited about the highlight of the vear; the Sophomore Class Trip. On the next to the last day of school we crammed into two school buses and headed for Chicopee State Park and Riverside Amusement Park. The dav began cold and cloudy, but a few miles down the Massachusetts Turnpike warm and sunnyskies greeted us. Our morning at Chicopee State Park was filled with swimming, frisbee tossing, hiking around the lake and doing whatever we felt we could get away with. Later on we headed to Aga- warm. the home of Riverside. We will never forget the long climb to reach the top of the ’ loop coaster. How many got sick that day? We have yet to acquire an accurate count. We now began our Junior year here at L.H.S. We were introduced to two new people who would prove to be very influential in the coming year: Mr?-. Dunlop, who took the role of our advisor and managed to get things off the ground smoothlv, and Mr. Roohette, who took the role of Chemistry Teacher and gave us a headache that lasted all year. The class officers were Karen Lueier, President. Terri Lombardozzi, Vice- President. Patti Tav lor. Secretary, and Kelly McKay, Treasurer. J he illustri¬ ous four quicklv busied themselves with plans for the social event of the season — the prom. The first order of business was to find a band. We did even better than that. We found three, and Billy Burtt gained a smashed windshield a- a result of the search. Vi ith the constant prodding of Mrs. Dunlop, the Prom Committee got all the tickets, favors, and programs ordered and the prom was set to go as ear! as November. Now all we had to do was raise money to pax for it. Our biggest money-making venture was the Dance Marathon held in Octo¬ ber. Approximate!) thirty students danced their hearts out for ten hours and raised a good amount of cash for the class. There was the traditional car wash in the fall, and then the variety show in April. Phil Ryan did his best impersonation of Bert Parks as emcee, but look what happened to Bert Parks. Vi ith their own rendition of “Got To Get You Into My Life.” the jazz band won first prize. The re w ' ere a few highlights in sports last year. also. The girls basketball team had their first undefeated season as they went 19-0 in the league, and the boys team qualified for the Clark Tournament. In football action. Mike Bassett threw the winning touchdown pass as the Wolverines defeated David Proutx by a 6-0 margin. The field hockey team had a promising 5-0 start but finished 6-9. The cross country team ended with a record of 6 wins and 8 losses. The spring sports were also successful for the most part. The softball team was the undefeated SIX CL champs for the second year in a row, the girls’ tennis team finished at 7-11. the boys tennis team had a rebuilding year, the track team won their share of meets, and the golf team led by the super tal¬ ents of Mike Dufresne and Mike Shea, had their usual successful season. To cap off the year in sports the first annual sports banquet was held. Mr. Nel¬ son was quite the host as he handed out jackets anil t-shirts while reading cue cards that sounded something like: Joe Sehmoe ' s greatest moment in sports was tripping over the bench as he caught a pass and breaking the ankle of a VI est Boy Iston cheerleader as he plowed her over.” Friday. May 18. was the day we d all been waiting for and spending a lot of money on. Our night at Holden Hills Country Club was well worth it. Let It Grow was our theme song, and the band we finally managed to hire was called Misleading. And they really did follow Mrs. Dunlop ' s instructions to show up dressed well and in coordinated outfits — they all wore matching Hawaiian shirts and sneakers. Joanne Comeau was crowned Prom Queen with Heidi Bush. Jenny Hale, Karen Lucier, Kris LeBoeuf, Mary Flagg and Terri Lombardozzi as her court. It really was a beautiful prom, and we all moved the good time to Ellen Moore s house when Holden Hills told us we had to go home. Very early the next morning we headed for Hampton Beach. Picture the most gor¬ geous. sunny, warm day that you can imagine. We had the exact opposite. But the fog. drizzle, and near-freezing temperatures did little to dampen our spirits that day. Well, those boring last weeks of school dragged by, and final exams over, we left school for another summer, with senior senioritv alias superiority to look forward to in September. Seniors at last, we entered the hallowed halls of Leicester High in Septem¬ ber of 1979. feeling slightly bigger and slightly wiser. At last we could walk till ' halls and enter the bathrooms looking straight ahead instead of over our shoulder in fear of eggs or perfume. V e were all flung into the excitement of being seniors and trying to decide if we would go to college next year. Many classes were avoided by hiding out in the guidance office looking through booklets and pamphlets. With our hard working officers, Karen Lucier. Terasa Lombardozzi, Jen¬ nifer Hale, and Kelly McKay, and our dedicated advisor, Mrs. Dunlop, plans for the class trip. senior dinner dance, and even graduation were under way soon. Fall sports though not outstanding in Wolverine history, were a real part of our senior class. The football team, tri-captained by Mike Hassett. Tim Fontain. and Bobby Hyland, worked hard and came up almost equal with wins to losses. We won t mention the Thanksgiving Day game but we know the s mior members as well as the rest of the team fought their hardest. Field Hookey with an eleven senior line up was led by co-captains Kelly McKay and Mary Flagg. Their record was uh . . . well they worked hard and had a lot of fun . . . Poor Jan!!! The Cross Country teams was . . . um . . . definitely in a building year! Jim Troy was our only senior and a co-captain. The team did manage an 8-8 record and Jim went to the districts at W achusett Regional High School. The fall passed quickly for us all. The dinner dance committee, headed by an ambitious Terry Lombardozzi, the class trip under many enthusiastic planners, and the class play casted by many stage frightened actors and actresses, were all everyday topics. In a slightly masochistic way to raise money , thirty some odd seniors vol¬ unteered their bodies for a ten hour dance marathon. Though those of you who participated are still recovering, your efforts were appreciated and highlx successful in raising monex for all of us. The next big event for money raising, besides our continual candx sales. was our Cla Play. Toga. Toga. Toga. With Steve Six ha as George and the rest of the Alpha Beta crew right behind him. we managed to have a lot of fun and raise a great deal of money. Manx thanks to Mi Tournas for her infinite patience!! The snowless winter was accented by the girls basketball victories. Kellx McKay. Debbie Priestley, and Ann Brennan brought their otherwise voung team to a first round district upset against undefeated Oakmont. Pat Gallagher and Mike Hassett the co-captains of the boys ' basketball, led their team in yet another building year. Keep on trucking Mr. Chasse. W ith the holiday behind us and the welcoming of our much awaited new year, our entire attention seemed to hi ' directed to the class trip. Meeting after meeting we discussed how, when, where, and how much our trip to Washington would include. We decided to be the first ( lass to fix. and finally did so on April 24th on the 9:00 flight. Though dancing, eating, and partying were our main interests. Mrs. Dun¬ lop insisted we get our money ' s worth by seeing as much as possible. Ugh!!! From Blai hies to Bo-Jangles, Close ups. Disco to Skx lines Lounge, our class trip was one unique experience after the next. After much recooperation we all plunged into our last push to finish up our ( lass work and get down to serious graduation! For main, senior slump in the third quarter left us with a little hard work in the fourth quarter. Our plans all firmed up for a fantastic dinner dance at the classy El Mor- rocco, trimmed with a 32 ounce mug and all the extra keepsakes possible, we anxiously awaited that memorable night. Graduation, well graduation will be memory in itself. Dreams come true and more dreams made. We end one part and begin et another part of our lives. Good Luck to All. By now you re probably just wishing we ' d all just sit down and this history would be done with. No such luck. Did you really think we d leave out the traditional Do you Remember? section? No wax! In fact, ours is longer than most, so take a deep breath, sit back, relax, and see if xou can remem¬ ber some of these things.
