Being able to watch Leave It to Beaver and eat lunch before catching the bus. “And even then we were underclassmen: They never gave us a break. But finally we moved up to the eighth grade, where we were the big guys. Then came our first taste of high school life. Freshman year and once again to our dismay we were underclassmen.” As we reentered old LHS — and I emphasize Old — we were quickly reminded of the leaky roof, smokey bathrooms, and those psychedelic purple, pink, yellow and orange classrooms. By the way, did you know orange is Dr. Rutter’s favorite color? Well so much for school colors ... In November we elected our class officers with Michael Quarrey as presi¬ dent, Mark Taberner as Vice President, Diane Canty the invisible Treasurer, and Anita Trepanier as a Secretary. With Mrs. Matte as our advisor we quickly organized a bake sale that had the biggest gross in LHS History, And I do mean gross... We made a whopping $47.95 — probably due to the fact that Mike Ward’s Mother baked 4 billion cupcakes. February was “Candy Month”, with bands of Freshmen roaming the halls and streets pushing Twiggies and Yum Yums as “Operation Schultzies” went into action . . . With little Sue Beaudette selling 200 boxes, we made close to $900.00. The amount of profit might have been greater if it wasn’t for those darn ants. And with such big projects as another bake sale and a Car Wash, where two people nearly drowned, and that ever successful yard sale, where we made $60.00, and accumulated 1.6 metric tons of garbage. Most of which we had to cart to the dump. Despite these setbacks, our projects earned us $ 1595.50 and the undying hatred of all the other classes! When we returned to our beloved school as sophomores, We were approached with many changes. To our surprise we were greeted by a matron in the bathroom, a skinny principal in the office and Michael Quarrey’s folley in Mrs. Matte’s closet known to most as the button machine. “No Competi¬ tion Quarrey” was elected as president again, Donna Wood as Vice president, Lori Reynolds as Secretary and Mary Jane Cook as Treasurer. With “Charity begins at ho me” as our slogan, Quarrey shifted the fund raising machinery into high gear. As usual, the candy sale was our most prof¬ itable endeavor, earning us $521.00, although interest had noticeably waned. Also that year was the infamous Kymera Concert with the light and smoke show where we, with the help of the Booster Club, again filled the coffers to the brim. On May 20th that year we held a Zoulas Free For All, featuring T-Birds world famous spaghetti sauce and our second-hand spaghetti — and the moral of this dinner was “We will serve no spaghetti before it’s ready.” After barely surviving the final exams, we felt we deserved a vacation. The culmination of months of planning, despite dissention within the ranks, was our trip to Chicopee State Park and Riverside, home of the Loop Coaster. If the success of a class trip can be judged by the number of people who get sick on the rides, ours was the ultimate. Having spent three long hours on a bus (Thanks Lyall) in 80 degree heat, we were ready for summer. We began our Junior Year with prom fever and swollen fingers. Every ring was a perfect fit. Oh, yes, we must not forget the lumpy heads of the under¬ classmen who dared to cross our paths now that we were armed with those nifty class rings. November brought falling leaves and rising profits as the candy sale was again a WHAT? — A resounding Triumph?! Then in the Autumn of ’78 we — Wait a minute!! We forgot something! Didn’t we have a prom in our Junior Year. I don’t know. I remember vaguely bringing a Tux back. That will clear up a mystery that has been bothering us for months. I remember — the Hogan Center was the setting — May 19th, 1978 was the day and “If” was our song and Bitter Creek was the band. And the moral of that was “if only we could all remember!! or let them eat cake. Then came the Fall of ’78. We had reached the Highest Plateau ... The year was short, the halls were crowded, the treasury was overflowing, we were tired and the school was “OURS” ... There was no longer anyone to push us around. We did all the pushing!... There was no one to make us take up their trays; we made freshmen take up our trays! ... There was no one to make us sing solos; we made lowly underclassmen sing solos ... There was no one to initiate us; we did all the initiating ... We didn’t do any initiating?! ... Well starting today we’ll do all the initiating. With Ringo Matte as our advisor for the fourth year, we elected as our class officers Michael “Civil Defense” Quarrey, as President; Kenny “Michelan¬ gelo” Carson, Vice President; David “Money Bags” Anderson; and Stephen “Arh Arht” Antanivica, Secretary. Michael appointed as social secretary Teena “Trendy” Zoulas. As seniors we inherited the football concession. Oh those great football games — rain, snow, sleet or HAIL, Leicester High being like the mail ... Delivery — comes through! ... Like the time torrential rains flooded out the hotdog stand. Despite Mrs. Matte’s constant bellowing “Get ’em while they’re hot!” and a lack of participation on the part of the class, we managed to break even. 106 Our biggest fund-raising project was the Senior Class Play “Heaven Can Wait” which quoted from a well known critic “Was the best play put on by amateurs.” What well known critic? Don’t ask Me!! In April this year the National Honor Society held a Blood Drive. They withdrew in all 60 pints of blood from both students and faculty. This was a record, considering 60 pints is the average amount collected from a school of several thousand. On April 16, 1979, 2 Fox-Line buses carrying 54 students and 6 chaperones Mr. and Mrs. Ringo Matte, Mr. Rocket Rochette, Mrs. Guidance Hyland, Miss P. T. Wakeen, and Mr. Musicman McKay, left Leicester and headed for Washington, D.C. It was a long 10 hour ride, seeming much longer because Michael broke the bathroom. We arrived in Washington, and after driving in circles, we finally located “The Barrel” and the Executive House — our two homes away from home for the next three days. We had one minor problem during our stay there, some¬ thing happened to the numbers on the doors. No one could find their rooms, — but that didn’t matter anyway, because no one was ever in their right rooms. With Mary Poppins and her umbrella leading us, the tours left much to be desired, but then again, few people were in any condition to enjoy them any¬ way. Our most exciting night in Washington was spent dining and dancing at Blackies. Blackies was never much of a disco until we arrived, and when we finally left, the management was relieved. To the dismay of the students and the rejoicing of the hotel security, it was with such deep sorrow that we departed. Although we went through quite a few rebuilding years, sports at LHS seemed to have improved. In our Freshmen year, the football team captured the T G title, the Field Hockey and softball teams both went to the districts and the softball team beat Southbridge — the X-State Champs.! In the following year the football team lost to Prouty for the first time. In our Junior year the Girls’ basketball team captured the District III Divi¬ sion II title and the softball team was undefeated SWCL champions. In our Senior year the girls basketball and softball teams both were unde¬ feated SWCL Champions. The second annual awards night was held on May 30th but this year a new feature was added — FOOD!!! Many awards were given out to athletes with outstanding achievements. Kathy Gallagher cleaned house, taking home four major awards, which were all well deserved. Mike McKay pulling in a close second with three awards, also well deserved. The most important award, Woverine of the year was presented to Doug Wood. We had a few bright highlights this year. The softball team were finalists in the district III Championship. Chuck Copeland and Joanne Pobieglo both went to the states in track. Kathy Gallagher was chosen to the T G All-Star Team for two straight years while Terry Dykas got an honorable mention her senior year. Last years class used at the end of their class history, a section called “Do you remember” so we decided to copy them. Do you remember... ... Old Slewfoot and Fodderwing ... Riverside, Lyall and the pinball machines ... The Ghosts ... Mr. Rochette camping in the third floor hallway ... Security Check??!!!!!! .:. The Washington Monument at 11:59? ... Michael’s face as he fell through the elevator door. ... The Chinese cabdriver? ... ICE DOWN MRS. HYLAND’S BACK! ... Friday’s at Quabbin!!!!? ... Invisible Ink? ... Mary Poppins? ... Do you want to??!! ... Oh Very Young And the Chateau De Ville? ... The Junior Prom? ... The mysterious disappearnace of the hotel room numbers?! ... That great controversial newspaper: The Arrow ... When Fran Rigiero broke the elevator door? ... Larry! Larry! ... Break And Sixth period class? ... Sue Beaudette, Wayne Bergeron, Mike Ward, Steve Esposito-Kane, Peter Abrahmson, and Sharon Pike? ... And Then the return of the “’78” ... Smashing pumpkins on Pompey’s porch? ... Waxing Statues? ... Future Shock? ... Painting Billboards? ... The Infamous Button Machine? ... Football Concession? ... That questionable Chicken a-la-Kings served up in the caf then thrown up in the courtyard? ... The whirlpool in the caf after a rainy day? ... Those boring football rallies? And most of all, if you don’t remember anything else, Please remember that “WHAT WE DO HERE IS IMPORTANT” but then again, GRADUA¬ TION IS NO BIG ACCOMPLISHMENT!!!!!!” Before we close the book on our four years of total dedication to LHS, We hereby testify this to be our LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT ... We leave to the school our class motto signs. We leave Mr. Toepher guesiing. We leave Ruthie with tears of joy streaming down her face. To the freshman class we leave our places in the detention room, which we know they will put to good use. To the sophomores we leave Mr. Rochette. To the Juniors we leave the knowledge that they will never be as rich as we were. With the many things we have accomplished, and all the happy moments we shared, we leave you now ... 07 SENIOR DINNER DANCE GRADUATION J U N E 6 1979 Michael P. Quarrey The Arthur D.
